Last Thursday US President Bush gave a speech in Jerusalem, during a celebration of Israel's 60th anniversary. Among the topics the president discussed, He made a comparison between the appeasement of the Nazis in the thirties, and negotiating with the leaders of contemporary 'Rogue States' such as Iran and North Korea. President said that,"Some seem to believe that we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all the time." Although this statement was likely meant as a thinly veiled attack on Senator Barack Obama, the inherent truthfulness of the statement made me take notice. As an avowed liberal the president and I disagree on many things. However in this instance he is entirely correct. Millennialists such as the extremist fundamentalists in the middle east, and world wide believe that they are destined to destroy their enemies and rule the world. And the sub-text of Millennial-ism is that they will ACCEPT NO OTHER ALTERNATIVES. No matter how eloquent and graceful an argument you make, they will not change their minds, or compromise. However America and other liberal democracies must attempt to resolve issues diplomatically if they wish to remain 'The good guys'. At this point, in order to maintain a positive view of 'The West' the act of talking with our enemies is more important than whether or not we make any headway.
