World Turtle Day May 23 is World Turtle Day, and we'd like to take the opportunity to highlight a hidden threat to sea turtles: plastic. Please read this news article and
it if you like it!Sea turtles will mistake plastic bags for food, thinking that they are jellyfish. These turtles will often be found dead with their intestines clogged by plastic bags. And with 100 million tons of plastic in the North Pacific alone, this a major threat. In fact, one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals die globally each year due to ingestion of or entanglement in plastics. Celebrate World Turtle Day by pledging to reduce your use of plastics on behalf of the world's oceans and the turtles that live in them.
The Pledge"I commit to do my part to rise above plastics and protect the world's oceans, waves and beaches from plastic pollution. I will do this by:
Using reusable bottles for my water and other drinks. By using just one reusable bottle, I will keep 167 single-use plastic bottles from entering the environment. Using cloth bags for groceries and other purchases. For each reusable bag I use, I will save approximately 400 plastics from being used. Recycling the plastic bags and bottles I already have.
