Although this does not apply to everyone, we hope the article is a worthwhile read and that the majority perceive things from a different point of view from reading this.

DeviantArt Watermark - [i'm sorry, i hate it]

*davespertine:icondavespertine: reports, May 24, 2008
DeviantArt Watermark

It's not that i don't like the deviant art logo... it's a 'nice shape'
But when it is used as a watermark placed right in the middle of an image it is nothing but an annoying distraction.
Watermarks can, and should be subtle and can even add to the effect of an image.
If used, a watermark should be part of the creative choce of the artist and not some random event.

some examples of images with deviant art watermark:
[owners can remove the watermark at any time]

The problem with the deviant art watermark
:bulletblue: it is ugly, obtrusive, large and placed in the centre of the image
:bulletblue: i don't mind watermarks, they can look cool, or be a signature, logo for your work
:bulletblue: the great painters signed their work, but not right in the middle and in a huge marker pen
:bulletblue: a watermark set in the center draws the eye away from the work at is really difficult to view the work properly.

some images with 'cool' watermarks:

Resizing images as an alternative:

If you are concerned about art theft one alternative is to limit the size
:bulletblue: When you submit deviation, select a suitable size (400 pixels wide is the smallest)
:bulletblue: uncheck the Allow download of fullsize image option

You know I remember you commented on one of my works not a long time ago when you said even if you liked (as far as I can recall) them you won't fav 'cause of the watermarkings. I understand your concern and kind of considering that as well. Let's see :)

SIGNATURE... what's that?
:iconalimuse:
I agree with you completely! Seeing that watermark when you go to large view is a big disappointment because it essentially defaces the work of art.

Thanks for discussing this in your journal! :D

I am right behind you on this. I refuse watermarking on here because it's like putting a giant, bright price tag on the middle of the front of a book.

I completely agree with you! It's bloody ugly, this monstrosity slap bang in the centre of an image. You'd have thought that we would have more creative control over it by now given the creative nature of the website. One can hope

"Everyone has a photographic memory, some just don't have film!"
:iconcatskullcollector:
I agree with you here. :D It's not ugly... it's just right smack in the middle and most of the time the subject is in the middle and I can't fully appreciate the artwork.

Three things I know: Let go of fear and regret, live your passions and live with passion.
:iconthetelevator:
I completely agree with you. The waterwork destroys the message behind the work - and although you like the work itself you cannot fave it because of the watermark. I mean... why should I fave something where the watermark is bigger than the work? "Oh cool, great watermark by deviantArt, dude! This awesome, fave!" ... no way.
