Every day, since I have no life and love my street photography category, I go through some pages of deviations looking for miscats, or images that should be in another gallery. Every day, I have to stop myself from doing too much because frankly, the list is endless. The Street Gallery on deviantART is vandalized with literally thousands of miscategorized images.

The thing is, when I look for miscats, I look for big time miscats, stuff like Skateboarding, snowboarding, or pets. Probably 97% of the gallery, not including miscats actually wouldn't be considered "street photography" by myself and many of my peers. I think it's time for two things to happen in order for the street gallery to thrive, and people to finally understand and love the art of street photography:

1) Educate! Everyone needs to know what goes in the "Street" category, and what goes in Photojournalism > Sports, or Scraps. This surely is an easy fix, with both ^projecteducate and the Gallery Info during submission, people should be able to understand the gallery as long as they try to be informed and read.

2) Know your galleries! People need to understand what street photography studies, as well as every other gallery they love and submit to. They need to know that street photography doesn't necessarily require a street in it, but it does require a person, an event, or "people in candid situations in public places." (Direct quote from Gallery Description)


So please, educate yourself and know your galleries. The whole purpose of deviantART is to find great art...but how can you do that if you have to sift through thousands of miscategorized images? Report miscats, educate people who are not properly submitting, note your Gallery Director, and be conscious of the deviantART galleries... after all, they are ours!
