MainThe 3 parts of
Essence of Time are linked with each other very closely. The main-events though take place in "Essence of Time" (The trilogy at a whole is named after these events).
The events take place in the following order:
-Essence of Time-The forgotten Journey (25 years before the events of EoT)
-Essence of Time
-Enwa's Quest: The cross of Ameran (100 years after EoT)
Short Summary of EoT(unspoiled as much as possible. Main-events and hints of the story were cut out of here for good)The historical backgroundThe whole plot takes place in the 3 Worlds Asgard, Midgard and Utgard. The Gods of Asgrad and the Demon-Overlords of Utgard are sworn enemies since almost eternity and fought each other in a brutal war called "The Eternal War". Torn between the fighting forces, the World Midgard withered away and now life was able to spread on the rotten land. 8 Gods and Demons however felt pity for the
Middle-World and abandoned the idea of an eternal war. They sacrificed themselves and became pure Mana, the Essence of Life. This Mana formed into 8 Great Spirits, which provide the world with the life-ensuring Mana. Their might spread over all Midgard and life started to grow. Unable to use Midgard as battle-field any longer, the Gods and Demons decided to sign an armistice-treaty and stopped the open fights between their forces. The hate however still remained between both Worlds.
Essence of TimeThe Main-story of the Trilogy. The 8 Great Spirits disappeared from Midgards Surface and Mana -slowly but sure- seems to run short in the Middle-World.
Ary van Tirith is the last remaining descendant of the "van Tirith"-tribe, human summoners that obsess the ability to form pacts with the 8 Great Spirits of Midgard. She grew up among a man called Callo Moerbin, once the best friend of her father. Her parents died in a mysterious attack 15 years ago. Her best friend, Yuna Ora, a half-demoness living in the same village as Ary does, teaches her how to fight with daggers while Callo shows her the ways of summoning. She is aware of the fact that one day she must travel to the Spirits' realms and free them to ensure the survival of her world.
During a monster-hunt in the Wehrheim-Woods, next to her home-village she gets attacked by a mighty monster called
Dark Widow. The mantis-like monster chases her through the forest, farther and farther away from her home. She runs into two young men, Ledah Ainu and his (very dorky) half-brother Ifrit. Together they manage to defeat the monster and they gain Ary's trust. Strangely though, Ledah seems to know a lot about Ary's abilities as a summoner and tries to convince her to go on the journey to free the 8 Spirits
now, together with him and Ifrit. Callo, Ary's very protective guardian, disagrees with it though but in the end decides to join his protégé along with Yuna.
Essence of Time-The forgotten JourneyBasically the journey of Ary's father, Allen. He tries to find a way through the Yora-Desert towards the so called "Nightsky Realm", the temple of one of the Great Spirits. His lack of orienteering causes him to break down in the desert after a 3-day-marsh through the burning sands of Yora. When he awakes he finds himself in the house of a desert-elf called Callo. He tells him about his plans to free the Spirits again and to restore Mana in Midgard. Callo, first rather skeptic about the young man's theories he decides to help him in the end to find the Nightsky Realm, as he was there before as well. An other important personage is Zeyir Grozen, a demon-prince from Utgard. He found out about the lack of Mana in Midgard and came to restore it with the help of a summoner. He joins Allen and Callo and together they decide to travel to the Light-chapel next.
Enwa's Quest: The cross of AmeranAfter successfully returning to Asgard after Midgard's regeneration, Ledah becomes a member of the High-Senate in Menel-Asgard's Capital. He is the representative of the Demons in the Holy Senate. As sign of this important position, the demons make Ledah the new guardian of the
Cross of Ameran, a very important item that is said to hold the 3 Worlds in balance. During a festival in which the Gods want to offer their respect towards the cross, the Senate gets attacked by unknown forces. The Gods, including Ledah, are unprepared and unarmed, their only chance is Magic. Concentrating on the battles in front of him, Ledah doesn't manage to protect both at once: The Senate-members AND the Cross. Someone manages to steal it. The thief seems to have disappeared from all 3 Worlds, as none of the spies of Asgard nor Utgard is able to find any hints about him. Ledah, feeling guilty for not fulfilling his task, decides to chase after the thief no matter what, and uses an old forbidden spell, he learned from his parents, to bring back the Cross.
