Today's article may come as a bit of a surprise, given that the club posted one yesterday. Nevertheless, here's another one. Please let me advise that faving this news article will increase the chances of it being seen, and therefore increase the chances of the deviations within it being seen. I (~mrjans) contributed all of these deviations, so I hope you enjoy. ;)

How Much is Really Appropriate?

~Libis:iconLibis: reports, June 25, 2008
How Much is Really Appropriate?

Simply browsing around deviantART you'll find it. One cannot even look at the popular collections page without seeing it. Mature content, unmarked and unfiltered. How much can we really put up with?

“Mature content” is supposed to have a tag, and is defined by the help and FAQ as a deviation that “contains material or theme which more sensitive viewers may find to be offensive or upsetting. Common subjects which are considered Mature Content are nudity, excessive violence, blood and gore, sexual themes, strong language, or ideologically sensitive themes. See below for explanations.
Nudity-Fairly self explanatory. If your work contains nudity, displaying a penis, testicle, vagina, breast, nipples, or buttocks you should assign this tag.
Sexual Themes-References to sex or overt sexuality, including sexual based humor. Please be aware that we do not allow the submission of sexually explicit or pornographic content (images, literature or otherwise).
Violence/Gore-This refers to overtly bloody or violent imagery, generally associated with the horror and macabre genres, but could also pertain to photojournalism or written work. This should mainly be applied toward depictions of violence or gore etc, that are portrayed in a "realistic" manner as opposed to the zany or exaggerated cartoon violence.
Strong Language-Profanity, vulgarity, and otherwise coarse or offensive language.
Ideologically Sensitive-If your work may be construed as offensive toward a person or group of people due to a religious, political, social or other belief please assign this tag to it. While deviantART does not allow the submission of hate propaganda or hate art we do recognize that often works motivated for political, religious or other personal beliefs can be seen as offensive by those holding opposing beliefs.

Pornographic and other unacceptably sexual themes continue to be prohibited despite the presence of this tag as are certain other contents which have been judged unacceptable. Information concerning this is covered elsewhere in this FAQ”
Despite the measures our staff has gone to, this sort of material seems to be floating around everywhere without even a mature content tag to keep it from the eyes of those who either do not wish to see it, or who are far too young to be exposed to it. More deviants should be reporting the rampant carelessness towards these guidelines. All anyone would really have to do is briefly explore the collections page. Or search certain words that I'm sure you already know and may remain unsaid.
Basically, I'm tired of accidentally seeing the nether-regions of women when I really would rather not, and there are likely many others who share my thoughts. It is not appropriate for a site that caters to a fair amount of minors.

I'm pretty rabid with my mature filter. If there is a hint of a butt or outline of a breast I slap the filter across it. My new fun thing is to browse new stuff for about 30 minutes while watching tv and flagging all the actual hardcore porn that comes in. I've gotten a few deviants banned :D. I don't keep track of unfiltered nudity because I have my stuff setup to already show it. I guess I could turn off that function and see what comes up...

One of my major issues is drawings of girls in something so skin tight it is like a shirt is painted over their breasts with full detail outlines of nipples and everything. It gets not mature filter and DA staff could care less...

Yeah, I agree that that type of shirt is rather mature as well. They practically just have a different color of skin...

Thanks for being rabid with your mature filter, lol.

I completely agree. If people want to post nudity, or anything related, they should put it under mature content. They need to consider those that do not want to see the nudity. It's completely rude and makes a lot of people uncomfortable.

Consider the people! :o

(Glad to be of assistance ;))

I was looking at the front page a few weeks back and my youngest son standing behind me seen several nudes on the first page of the popular section. If he was standing here this morning (I don't look when he's around anymore) he would have seen a nude butt in the air, and a nipple being pinched and a nude woman laying on her back playing with herself. I think nudes can be art and it is subject to interpretation, but the mature content tag you check is there for a reason. I know that if you went into my gallery to look at my art anyone under eighteen would have seen a tag on my mermaid stating that it contained mature content. (Because her breast are bare)

As a parent I find it ridiculous that young people or people who just don't want to view it have no choice if they want to browse DA. I don't think it should be uncensored and displayed on the front page.

I believe this to be completely true  i have looked around and saw many untagged 'mature' content. They say 'oh, its not mature, just nature' yep, i would say most of what you explained perfectly. You said it all
