Los escritores del manicomio

Hace algún tiempo, el periódico British Journal of Psychiatry, vocero de la psiquiatría en la Gran Bretaña, reveló que los escritores “sobrecargan su cerebro d imaginación y en consecuencia sufren con frecuencia de disturbios mentales”.

El estudio, realizado por el profesor Feliz Post, se basó en las biografías de un centenar de escritores británicos y norteamericanos y se hizo con el fin de explicar (o de tratar de explicar) por qué los creadores literarios en esos países padecen a menudo enfermedades mentales, ya que según una investigación precedente publicada en 1994, el doctor Post había llegado a la conclusión de que “los creadores sufrían con más frecuencia que los demás mortales, problemas mentales y emocionales”. El caso es que, en más de una ocasión, literatura y locura han ido de la mano con inusitada asiduidad. Y aunque el concepto de locura es relativo, en el artista es más notoria por cuanto él mismo o a través de sus obras expresa como nadie sus delirios y perturbaciones sin ninguna clase de inhibiciones o disimulos.

La escueta noticia del periódico inglés no revela detalles de la metodología utilizada por el doctor Post. Simplemente informa que “los casos de psicosis o depresión afectan al 80 por ciento de los poetas, al 80,5 por ciento de los novelistas y al 87,5 por ciento de los dramaturgos” y agrega que “sólo el 31 por ciento de los poetas son alcohólicos, contra el 54 por ciento de los dramaturgos”. Por razones incomprensibles no se nos suministran datos acerca del porcentaje de novelistas alicorados.“Los poetas –concluye la información- viven más tiempo, se divorcian menos, pero sufren cambios de humor más bruscos que los escritores”.

Aunque, desde luego, nos parezca bastante superficial el mencionado artículo, pensamos que los problemas emocionales y los desequilibrios mentales de que son víctimas los creadores literarios y artísticos, no se diferencian en mucho de los del resto de los mortales. Sólo que los artistas poseen en grado sumo una alucinada sensibilidad que se extiende, se bifurca, se arquitectura, se enreda y se confunde de tal manera que la mente del poeta la transfigura en ocasiones en un infierno exquisito o en un paraíso de delirios.

Son conocidos los casos de escritores que llegaron a la esquizofrenia, como Antonin Artaud (1896-1948), célebre poeta y dramaturgo francés, quien conmovió a sus contemporáneos con los hermosos delirios de su Teatro doble, pero también con sus fantasmagorías. El ombligo de los limbos fue su gran aporte poético al surrealismo. “La razón me abandona”, escribía desesperado. “Y no logro recobrarla ni materializarla, ni siquiera a través de las palabras”.



En cambio al poeta norteamericano Ezra Pound lo encerraron en un manicomio en Washington durante doce años, acusado de loco y condenado al ostracismo por haber combatido la entrada de sus compatriotas a Italia a través de emisoras radiales al término de la II guerra mundial.

Los progresivos tormentos mentales de Ernest Hemingway llevaron a suponer que, en el colmo de la angustia (real o imaginaria), se suicidó de un tiro en la boca. Decía que en los últimos años se sentía perseguido por agentes del FBI, a quienes veía en cada esquina, en los cafés y en las plazas de toros. Una vez intentó escapar de un avión en pleno vuelo, acosado por los ojos inquisidores de un supuesto (o real) perseguidor y no fue tarea fácil para pasajeros y tripulantes de la nave el disuadirlo de su paranoia. Años después de la muerte del novelista, se comprobó que en efecto el FBI lo seguía sol y a sombra en todas las latitudes, por su participación al lado de los republicanos en la guerra civil española y sus simpatías por la naciente revolución cubana.

Edgar Allan Poe, en un momento de abstinencia alcohólica, sufrió de “delirium tremens”, estado en el que abundan alucinaciones que toman forma de siniestros insectos y hórridos animales.

Otros poetas han experimentado alteraciones del sentimiento o de la conducta hacia el mundo exterior a consecuencia de consumo de algunas drogas alucinógenas. El poeta colombiano Raúl Gómez Jattin, pequeño dios alucinado, maníaco-depresivo y esquizo-afectivo, coincidió con la poeta venezolana Martha Kornnlith en una larga e inútil terapia en la clínica Monstserrat de Bogotá.

Ella describió en el iconoclasta de Cereté un hombre que había logrado sublimar los límites de su alienación mediante un poema, una palabra, una metáfora. Hicieron una breve y bella amistad en la clínica, en donde llegaron a la conclusión de que “el genio es una forma de la locura”.
Raúl murió atropellado por un autobús en Cartagena en mayo de 1997 y Martha se suicidó, luego de una prolongada depresión, arrojándose por la ventana de su apartamento en Caracas, en diciembre del mismo año. Ambos, habían alcanzado la etapa del “darse cuenta” de su mal y creían en el pasado como único punto de llegada.

Sin saber en qué zona de la realidad estamos, solemos preguntarnos a menudo: ¿Dónde está la verdad, el lugar exacto de la sensatez y la cordura? ¿Y dónde el de la locura, la demencia y la enajenación? Borges dijo que si Hamlet acudía a la presentación de Hamlet y Don Quijote leía párrafos de Don Quijote, probablemente los lectores éramos ficticios.

Poeta, narrador y ensayista español nacido en Madrid en 1948.
Hijo del poeta Leopoldo Panero y hermano de Juan Luis Panero, también poeta, mostró desde muy pequeño su interés por la poesía. A los dieciseis años, fascinado por la izquierda radical, ingresó al entonces prohibido Partido Comunista, cuya militancia le valió su primera estancia en prisión.
Inició su carrera como poeta de la mano del maestro Pere Gimferrer, sin embargo, su atribulada vida, trastornada por el alcoholismo, la depresión y dos intentos de suicidio antes de cumplir los ventiún años, lo llevaron a la esquizofrenia, manteniéndolo internado por voluntad propia, en un pabellón psiquiátrico donde mantiene vivo su interés por la literatura.
