*winklepickers:iconwinklepickers: reports, 1d 13h ago
A petition to make comments and faves lists easier and quicker to use. It would be optional if the administration agrees.
The more signatures there are the better chance we have of being satisfied.
Thank you. :)

Microsoft farewells Smart Tags

~cype:iconcype: reports, June 29, 2001
Microsoft has decided to remove Smart Tags from upcoming versions of Internet Explorer and Windows XP.

Smart Tags automatically add "links" to Web content that send a reader to related content. Ok, If you are not following here's an example: with Smart Tags a page that contained the word "browser" (we all love that word) might offer a link to a tech dictionary defining the word, or it might link to Microsoft's download page.

And many site developers criticized the idea of anyone changing the make-up of their pages. Microsoft offered to turn the default on Smart Tags to "off" and make it possible for sites to turn Smart Tags off by adding meta tags to their pages. But such solutions were spotty at best and would have forced companies to spend time and money protecting themselves from a "feature" of questionable benefit.

Even though Smart Tags were included in the beta version of Internet Explorer, they will be removed in the final version of Windows XP.

Smart Tags still remain on Office XP, however the difference there is that users can control documents they have created, while with Smart Tags for the Web have the ability to change web sites without the consent of the web site creator(s).

Microsoft said that there's a possibility that Smart Tags might be brought back into its browser and operating system in some revised form in the future.

You mean "Microsoft claims to remove Smart Tags". I bet they'll just leave 'em in there for later.

Dumb Microsoft,
One day there raving about this new feature, the next minute it's like their ashamed of it.

What about "active desktop", it was one of the main selling points of Windows 98 and now they probably wish they never made it.

They've gotten themselves in a position that people expect them to create new tecnological breakthroughs with every release so the do whatever they, can no matter how useless it really is.
~cype:iconcype: Jun 29, 2001, 1:52:34 AM
Lol yeah craeonics... so they say you can just "turn them off" but I dunno nowadays about Microsoft they always seem to sneak something in there without people finding out, and when they do its a bit too late.

Lol active desktops... what a joke.

$liquisoft:iconliquisoft: Jun 29, 2001, 2:00:03 AM
I think Microsoft is just going to rename the Smart Tags as something like "Intellectual Brainiac Tagolios", just so people won't catch on. Theyll hide the features in small print on the back page of the user manual.

~cype:iconcype: Jun 29, 2001, 2:09:38 AM
Lol indeed they will, but hey don't give them any ideas for all i know Bill Gates can be looking at this forum right... for all *you* know I could be Bill Gates :D (Big Grin)
