A few words of advice for new models:

=photoswithattitude:iconphotoswithattitude: reports, 1d 17h ago
I get many questions asked by new models what is TFP? Why do I have to sign a release form, or what do you mean by "Implied Nude"?

So I thought the simplest way to explain it all is to write an article....

Is dA heading in the right direction?

=morbidthegrim:iconmorbidthegrim: reports, July 1, 2008
I ran a journal a few weeks ago about a particular piece of work that received a Daily Deviation but the ratios of views to favs was well out of line.

Journal can be found here: [link]

Weather you agree with the piece or not is not what I am looking at in this news item, its the running theme of the comments and I quote:

"I can understand that but there are some images on here that are no where near this type of quality with 100's of favs, sometimes I wonder how much art is actually looked at here?"

"From what I've seen running around dA, I hardly think quality is important to them. I but if there was a sweet kitten near him or some anime book, it would have more faves, though."

"Sheesh.. "only" 165 favourites. I'd destroy carbon based life forms for those numbers. I average 1.something per image, and my best has 16, i think.

It's a brilliant image, but, frankly, most of the favouriting is done by people that want fluff, not great art. Why do you think "MySpace" self portrait nudes by 19 year old girls get 500+ faves? Most people wouldn't know art if it dressed in dayglow orange with a neon sign saying "Fuck it, I'm art" on them. Then again, most people couldn't find a clue if they were a clue covered in clue pheremones in a field full of clues during clue mating season.

Let's face it, dA faves are dominated by plagiarised fan art, horrific manga/hentai, home made porn and stolen images. All we can do is try to be candles in the dark, during a hurricane."

"Oh, this is a really strong and out of the ordinary photo. I didn't notice it, thank you for sharing! I just faved it. I'm not surprised it didn't get a lot of favs. I think it's intentionally disturbing, upsetting. Most people on deviantart prefer kitties and hamsters"

"and porn made by frustrated exhibitionist people..."

So the question I ask is where is dA heading? Does it make business sense to allow the site to become yet another social site such as Myspace? Or will serious art start to come to the fore again?

Myself I think that maybe too much concentration is in running a business at the moment, if it continues then maybe those that are serious in what they do will look elsewhere to display their art, where will that leave dA?

think you're not totally wrong..but there are some few cases i think.... i think most of the dEviants here really want to make and fave real art... sure tere are some idiots who son't have a clue of anything...but that happens everywhere..

whats art to someone will never be to others, and is subject to taste. not everyone can produce only high quality 'art'.

sorry i'm having a "blonde" moment
:iconeloren:
I agree with you, DA is not really heading the right way..

One thing annoys me too.. Is once a person gets "known" in here (either he posted loads of nude pics, or anime style drawings..) he will automatically get thousands of faves on each photo/art he uploads even if it's TOTAL crap.

Friends will automatically fave their friends, even on snapshots of their grandma's toes during her 90th birthday.. Where's the criticism?

It's all about masses.. sheep.. Their are soo many excellent shots in here that simply drown under the myspace-style-crap being uploaded every minute.. that's sad :(

I think you touched a sensitive spot , its a reality tht a few month ago make choose if i leave or not D.A, i agree with you in every point , more and more non artists are entering D.A , well its not a problem art is for everyone , but those new deviants that enter in these comunity just wanna see the images copy them and use them in some " their own stuff", they dont comment or leave favs nothing , and when they did its on that flufy or anime images like you say.
I have a lot more stuff to say bu i will not say it because iam not a war beginning type , but someone smart enoufh could see it eveywhere ... ( sorry about my english )

Just imagine .... its cheap !

*Eloren is right, i totally agrea with him. I hate it that so many good shots are underrated on deviant, and the my space crap and the stupid manga drawings done in like 5 minutes get all the attention. Recently i've seen something that i wouldn't even call a sketch, and it was in the popular category with more than a 1000 :+fav:. God like, i've seen professional photographs, stuff people have put hours of prep work and not getting even 100 :+fav:. It is so not fair..

A bit right, but if it is free place to put what people want for example manga, hentai. Many people there like manga and anime and I think it is the most important things that this piece of "art" get comment ( more comments than photoes).
I noticed photoes is less admire work than hm.. for example fan art.
We can't change it, one good thing it promotion photography hm.. in news and other.

This shot in your journal it is horrible and I hate it ><

Do your best, don't give up !!!
I belive, I can change the world :meow:

It's stupid to give up, isn't it?
:iconmorbidthegrim:
I agree, to me its the thought process that the piece has been given, sometimes it is a simple snapshot but it has been thought about, its a magna sketch but it has been thought about, that makes the difference. I have no issues with images of cats etc as long as it looks as though some sort of creative thinking has been used. If you look through my favs you will see examples of this, some are not great works but I can see how people have thought about what they are doing.

What concerns me is if dA simply becomes yet another social network site, there are too many as is and not enough like it is now. Once again I enjoy the interaction with other members (look at some of the banter I have with :icondamien-c: ) but I have always come here to look at art in any form first and foremost :)
:iconmorbidthegrim:
I have just replied to :iconvenables: above, I agree with what you are saying and the issues I have is the thought process behind what is being uploaded, I have a lot of :iconcelticmagician: work in my favs and she does a lot of fan art etc but she thinks about what she does, its the creative thought process that makes the difference for me, something lacking in some deviations here.
:iconrifas:
Well, one thing i know. There's so much good photographies in here that makes really hard to check them all... OK it's really impossible :sniff: and that piss me off. I think that the galleries should be more specific and allow you to choose the right place to submit your work, that way when you're around you'll know where to look and that will allow us to never see some crap works just like you said. Totally agree that dA is becoming another social site.
But, hey if wasn't like that i think i will not be here cause my work isn't that good, I'm a amateur and don't have the right concept about what is art or not, just doing what is right to me you know!
So is dA going in the right direction... really don't know, but ill vote on yes it is =)

It's better to be hated for what you are, than to be loved for what you're not..

:icondadanddaughters:
I have only been on DA for a short while so not sure if I can comment on the direction it is going because I don't know enough about where it has started from. I chanced upon the site and it has given me a much needed interest which I hope will evolve over time, especially by looking at how good some of the work is here and aspiring toward it. I have felt as if I am a bit out of my depth as I am only a beginner and cannot devote the time I want to my hobby at the moment, but the friendly attitude and encouragement has meant that I have stayed. As for it being a social network site I don't see the problem of that being a side effect of people with similar interests enjoying a platform for sharing their work.

As for the statement "Let's face it, dA faves are dominated by plagiarised fan art, horrific manga/hentai, home made porn and stolen images. All we can do is try to be candles in the dark, during a hurricane." It may be right, I don't know. Those subjects don't interest me so I haven't looked for them and I haven't seen much of it. Perhaps I am missing out on some good stuff but I won't worry too much at the moment. With regards to faves, I am chuffed as nuts to get 1 fave let alone dozens, especially if it from someone whose work I admire. I hope the people who do submit some remarkable stuff continue to do so and flourish, generally speaking I find that those in life who focus on the shallow stuff and go for the lowest common denominator don't hang around for the long term.
