[Proj.Educate] Interview with Shy-Too-Shy

^Helewidis:iconHelewidis: reports, July 13, 2008
As part of the Project Educate Artistic Nudes Segment Week I present you a interview with =Shy-Too-Shy! Most of you know her from her modelling work but =Shy-Too-Shy is an active artist – and not just in photography, as you will learn very soon...

Warning: The more you get to know this force of nature the more you will fail to resist to her. I fell in love with her right in the first part! :D

And now, without further delay I give you…

:star: :iconshy-too-shy: :star:

I simply love what I do. I love the people I work with, I love sharing with my friends, and I love attempting to help others of all ages and persuasions to understand that Artistic Nude Photography IS an Art. The human body is NOT "dirty" or "bad", and capturing Images of it is my way of demonstrating the beauty of the human condition... the form, the emotions, the aspects which are inherent to us all, without concealment.

^Helewidis - Do you remember art being a big part of your childhood?

=Shy-Too-Shy - Definitely!! My father was an Artist and my family collected works of Art from around the World. We also had an extensive Library with books on all variety of Art throughout the ages.

^Helewidis - Oh my!, that’s a wonderful background to have… what was your favourite book from that library? – I’m curious!

=Shy-Too-Shy - I have to say that they were "The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci" (there were two volumes)... there were many other books of course, but the diversity of that man's interests, and the drive on his part to pursue knowledge in ALL of these areas, and the WAY he documented his exploration and ensuing understanding was incredibly impactive to me!

^Helewidis - Who was your inspiration as you played with your finger paints?

=Shy-Too-Shy - We had beautiful paintings on our walls that I would try to copy... my parents were always so supportive and would always applaud my efforts... and hang them on the refrigerator!! Lol

^Helewidis - Were you supported by others to create?

=Shy-Too-Shy - Always. I have an extensive family, and I also had tutors that helped encourage me in a wide variety of Arts. I was a VERY fortunate child in this way!

^Helewidis - What medium did you use as a child?

=Shy-Too-Shy - I was taught everything from embroidery to painting with oils... as it turned out the oils are what I preferred working with.

^Helewidis - I admire that in you and in every oil painter. I myself had such an experience in my past and I sadly discovered I didn’t have patience for oil painting – it’s the waiting that “kills” me. So, this question just came up to my mind: What “kills” you?

=Shy-Too-Shy - A: My inability to draw!! Hahaha!! Oh my goodness!! I can "see" in my mind what I wish to convey, and I studied very much on how to then apply it to the paper (or canvas), BUT... even at my best you could only JUST discern what I was attempting to share... ach!!

^Helewidis - What is Art to you?

=Shy-Too-Shy - To me Art is the effort made to convey to others what you as the Artist see and/or feel. We all have a different perspective on everything due to individuality, and I think that if you are an Artist you are driven to share your own with those in the World around you.

^Helewidis - What are your aspirations regarding your art?

=Shy-Too-Shy - I wish to continue learning and growing. I love exploring new techniques and styles, and experimenting with mixing those at times, to create something that is entirely new to me. The possibilities are endless, and I find this very exciting indeed!!

^Helewidis - Very exciting indeed! By the way, have you ever tried photomanipulation?

=Shy-Too-Shy - Yes, I am rather fascinated with that form of Art, and I have an Album in my Gallery that has a few of my attempts in it. I will probably continue to explore it with time!!

^Helewidis - What is your favourite medium?

=Shy-Too-Shy - I can honestly say that I am in love with my Camera! Haha!! When I was learning to paint in oils, one of the things that were very heavily emphasized was to "see" the light and apply it to my canvas. What fascinates me is that I have to learn to "see the light" all over again with THIS medium. I have been extremely fortunate to have the patient guidance of my Mentors =Pelicanh and *PerryGallagher in assisting me to learn to "paint" my Images with light.

^Helewidis - Having mentors helps a lot, especially when one is still new to the media – would you be interested in helping others in dA by giving and receiving critique in a critique web-ring for Artistic Nudes? (I’m making this question because very recently a critique web-ring for Artistic Nudes was formed and is still on the growing chapter of its still short life… we’d love to have you with us)

=Shy-Too-Shy - Definitely!! I would never have been able to progress the way that I have if it weren't for others sharing their time and insights with me. I feel that the genre of Artistic Nude Photography can only be benefited by a continuation of this type of assistance!!

^Helewidis - If you could, you would?

=Shy-Too-Shy - Share with all fellow Photographers the amazing things I am learning about the Art. There is so much more to it than merely shooting an Image and uploading it...

^Helewidis - How did you find dA?

=Shy-Too-Shy - A friend recommended it as a wonderful community of Artists... he knew my love for all variety of Art, and that I would LOVE this site. Which I DO!!</div>

^Helewidis - Did you use other outlets for your art?

=Shy-Too-Shy - Actually, I am a Photographer by Profession so even in my "day job" I am able to continue learning and growing.

^Helewidis - Why dA?

=Shy-Too-Shy - It is so unique!! I know that there are other sites out there designed for Artists to share their work, but I have found that the overall set-up of dA is by far preferable to me!</div>

^Helewidis - What would you like to see here at dA?

=Shy-Too-Shy - Quite honestly, an "Erotic" category... not porn, but definitely a way to share the beauty of more sensually explicit works. Maybe with this category, people would have to accept viewing of it purposely, so as to avoid some of the "shock" that some seem to find even with Nudes, if they forget to apply their "Mature Content" filter.</div>

^Helewidis - What is your favourite part of dA?

=Shy-Too-Shy - I LOVE the variety and the world wide aspect of it. Interacting with friends from other countries is so fun, and it is also important to growth as an Artist, because it allows all cultures to interact and learn from one another easily.

^Helewidis - Do you tell offline friends about dA?

=Shy-Too-Shy - All of the time!! And in order to see the work of myself and some of my friends, they have to join too!! Haha!!

^Helewidis - If you could tell the world about dA what would you say?

=Shy-Too-Shy - If you love all genre of Art, if you love interacting with others, and if you wish to grow and learn as an Artist yourself, this is the place to be!

The surprising amount of people that do not understand that it is a form of Art. It amazes me to see how many people will go to a Museum and appreciate the paintings and sculptures that many times depict Nude Art, but when they are presented with a Photograph containing Nudity, somehow in their minds it is merely pornographic Imagery.

^Helewidis - When did you start modelling?

=Shy-Too-Shy - April 2006!! I was encouraged by a friend to explore Artistic Nude Photography once he realized that I had a good eye for it... as well as a deep appreciation for the Art. He had apprenticed with Lucien Clergue years ago, and felt that I would be good at it once I had an understanding of it. But first I would have to practice on myself!! To learn!! Haha!!

^Helewidis - What were your fears before modelling nude and what were your thoughts about it after the very first session?

=Shy-Too-Shy - Oh goodness!! I was VERY aware of my own body's flaws and issues!! I also knew that there were good points to myself as well! So, my challenge was to capture the aspects of myself that I felt were beautiful... while avoiding as much as possible those things which I did NOT wish to emphasize!!

After shooting my first set, I posted one of the Images here on my site. I then walked around the room for a couple of hours, flapping my hands in the air and hyperventilating!! LOL!! But when I returned to see what (if any) response there was to the Image, and I was quite pleasantly surprised! Not only were the comments kind, but there were also several people that offered me suggestions on how to improve on a few things!! Suddenly, I was no longer viewing these Images as ME, but as my WORK. I never looked back!

^Helewidis - Do you have any fountain of inspiration for your poses (and if so, can you please share it with us?) or instead you have the photographers to think about them for you?

=Shy-Too-Shy - That actually depends greatly on the Photographer I am working with. If they are very experienced and have many Images that are wonderful, then I go in with the thinking that they know what they are doing... and I work mostly with their direction. IF however I am working with a Photographer that is still learning, but has a great eye, I will definitely tell them if they ask me to pose in a manner that I KNOW for myself is NOT flattering! If a person has issues with certain parts of their body, they should ALWAYS be comfortable discussing it with the Photographer first!

Most shoots are also very fun, and the atmosphere is geared toward a relaxed and comfortable setting. Once everyone is preparing for the shoot together, there tends to be a lot of laughter and joking, and by the time everyone is ready to start shooting there is an ease and friendship in place that makes it quite enjoyable for everyone!

^Helewidis - Still on the poses, how long do you generally stay in one pose for a photograph? And also: have you ever posed for drawings? If so, how did you cope with the longer time of posing (any tricks!?)?

=Shy-Too-Shy - I have posed for Photos as long as 30 mins. at a time... sometimes in VERY unfriendly conditions!! Usually though, the average time to capture a pose is just a few minutes long. It can be QUITE exhausting by the end of the shoot, though... and most that have not posed themselves truly have no idea how much effort goes into it, both physically and emotionally!

I HAVE posed for drawings!! In that situation, you really need to be as comfortable as possible, and try to "zone out" so that you do not focus on your own body's wishes!! LOL!!

^Helewidis - What would be the 5 things (tips-wise) you’d say to a new model that is just starting to pose nude?

=Shy-Too-Shy - That is actually a very important question.

1. First of all, no matter how nice a person is, do NOT work with them unless their own Portfolio has many Images in it that you love and that you know others view as having good quality as well. It is so easy to feel flattered by someone wishing to do a shoot with you, but then afterwards it can be so disheartening if the Images are no where near as good as they should have been.

2. Talk to some of the other Models that the Photographer has worked with and hear from them what their experience was with the person.

3. Do not wear clothing that will leave marks or lines on your body before the shoot.

4. Be timely, and if you can not make the shoot, ALWAYS let the Photographer know well in advance. Time is money, and many times a shoot is arranged as TFP which is a trade between the Photographer and Model... she Models, the Photographer shoots, and they BOTH walk away with wonderful Images to use. BUT... many times if a Model can not make a shoot, the Photographer could book a paying client for that time... so it is very important to keep your appointment if at ALL possible.

5. Bring as much variety in outfits/lingerie as possible... there is nothing worse than thinking "Damn!! I really wish I had brought that little bra and panties set I bought last week!" when it is too late to do anything about it!! LOL!!

^Helewidis - How is it to work with your usual photographers? – Any different from the occasional ones?

=Shy-Too-Shy - Well, once you have worked with a Photographer on several occasions, there is definitely a more relaxed and often goofy rapport. Inside jokes, and a lot of banter can be half the fun in shooting with someone familiar. In my own experience though, with all of the usual back and forth communications prior to shooting with a new photographer, you really do get to know one another quite well before meeting, and once you are face to face everything else just falls into place to make for an enjoyable shoot!

^Helewidis - When you model with another person do you usually take some time prior to the shoot to talk with her/him and get to know better or is it just shoot, shoot, shoot? Can you please give us any insight about how your sessions usually go? :)

=Shy-Too-Shy - Hmmm... speaking for myself, I do have to say that I am a rather "familiar" sort of person. So I tend to treat everyone that I meet as though I have known them all of my life!! LOL!! Most shoots are planned well in advance, and the Models are given quite a bit of opportunity to connect before hand, to get to know one another a bit.

^Helewidis - How do you choose your models? What is your criterion? Why would you turn someone down, for example? and Where do you find them?
What inspired you to pursue this particular genre (Artistic Nude) in the first place?

=Shy-Too-Shy - VERY interesting questions. I seriously do not have any criteria other than that they are a nice person. Most Models are lovely inside and out, but on occasion I will run across one that feels extremely "entitled" and it becomes quite evident while chatting that the shoot probably would not give them or myself what either of us are looking for! I am of the opinion that an attractive physical appearance is merely a gift of nature... it is NOT an accomplishment! Haha!

I find my Models through networking, and on sites such as this. Model Mayhem and One Model Place are two wonderful sites for finding Models AND Photographers to work with.

I have always appreciated the beauty to be found in the human body, all shapes and sizes. It just seemed natural to explore this through my own Photography. Also, it is a challenge of sorts to help others see what I do. So many people are of the opinion that they could never be Photographed well in this genre, and I love helping them to see themselves as I do... which is simply beautiful.

^Helewidis - What is the biggest challenge you've had to face as a nude photographer?

=Shy-Too-Shy - The surprising amount of people that do not understand that it is a form of Art. It amazes me to see how many people will go to a Museum and appreciate the paintings and sculptures that many times depict Nude Art, but when they are presented with a Photograph containing Nudity, somehow in their minds it is merely pornographic Imagery.

As for relaxing into the shoot from behind the Camera, all I can say is that for someone just starting out in Photography, the best thing possible is to be honest with the Model about that.

^Helewidis - What is your favorite lighting setup? Why?

=Shy-Too-Shy - I absolutely LOVE working with Natural Light! It is so readily available, and so kind to the Model! Northern light, as well as the wonderful light to be found at the "Magic Hour" (just after sunrise and just prior to sunset) are my very favorite of all... it simply can not be matched with Studio Lighting, although there IS a place for that at times as well.

^Helewidis - What do you answer to those intolerant people complaining about your art being only pornography? What would you tell them to open their eyes?

=Shy-Too-Shy - Well, there are many variety of reasons for people to have this opinion. Age can be a factor, as those that are young may equate their own natural hormonal responses with meaning the Imagery is just too "naughty", and many people that have been raised in an environment which is highly conservative can have difficulty differentiating between Nude Art and Pornography, as well.

I usually use the example I mentioned earlier of other forms of Art which can be found depicting the Human body in its natural state. Museums are full of them, and throughout history it has actually been a very significant theme. I will explain to them that although the medium is different, the actuality of the Artistic Nature is no different to me.

Some people come to an understanding of my perspectives on this, and others just can not seem to wrap their minds around the concept. In those instances where they can not accept my work as Art, we then simply have to agree to disagree! LOL!

^Helewidis - What do you do to make a model feel comfortable being nude in front of the camera? Do you ever have music playing to get the mood right? Could you share some ways to relax when behind the camera or giving directions to a model?

=Shy-Too-Shy - First of all, my own opinion is that a shoot should be fun! Yes I take my work seriously, but if we aren't having fun while shooting, then what really IS the point? If one or both of us ISN'T having fun, it will always show in the Imagery.

Most of my Models are aware that I also have been Nude in front of the camera. I can relate 100% to what that is like, and this makes a big difference for them when it comes time to step in front of my Camera. I also compliment them on the things that are most attractive about their appearance. If they are told right away that their skin is fantastic, or their eyes are so beautiful, or the curve of their waist is quite lovely, they then start to FEEL beautiful and attractive... and it shows instantly in the Imagery.

I also work with a Digital Camera, so I am able within a few frames to show them what I am capturing... once they see what I am seeing, they begin to trust me fully and relax into the shoot very quickly!

I DO love to play music while shooting, and will generally ask the Model to bring whatever music makes them happy along on the shoot.

As for relaxing into the shoot from behind the Camera, all I can say is that for someone just starting out in Photography, the best thing possible is to be honest with the Model about that. If you are attempting to project a seasoned and experienced personae, while also trying to figure out what some of the buttons on your Camera are for, you will probably become VERY tense, very quickly!! LOL!!

Also, having fun with the shoot will demonstrate itself behind the lens just as much as it does in front of it. Taking yourself too seriously will NOT benefit the Imagery OR the Model! And directing should not be done in a clinical manner. For instance if you are wishing to have the Model turn their head slightly, there would be a HUGE difference for them between being told "Move the head to the right!" and "Ok, that's wonderful! Now if you could just turn your head a little bit to the right... ahhh, PERFECT!". Always remember that the Model is a real person... NOT an object!
:)

^Helewidis - Could you share your 10 best tips with the community?

=Shy-Too-Shy - 1) If you love Photography, do not avoid pursuing it merely because you have an inexpensive Camera. Some of the most beautiful and compelling works of Art throughout history have been created with the simplest of mediums. It is the eye behind the lens that sees and captures the Images... that combined with your passion will do more for you than the most expensive of equipment ever could.

2) If you have always wished to Model, do not avoid it because you do not feel worthy. We ALL have "flaws" and imperfections. We also ALL have good aspects. Work with a Photographer who's Artistry you know is done well, and you will be amazed at how quickly they will help you to capture these aspects... and the next thing you know you are showing the World just how lovely you can be!!

3) If you are a Photographer, take the time to play with the light, and to look at the Model from different angles... the merest turn of the head, or lowering of the chin, or adjustment in the angle of light, can make all the difference between a so-so Image and one that blows BOTH of your minds!

4) Learn from the Works of others here on dA. Emulate styles, ask for advice, and do not be afraid to post an Image that you feel could have been better "if only"... ASK the community what they feel could improve an Image! The feedback can be invaluable!
5) Do not be afraid to try new things!

6) Remember that Post Work on an Image can be crucial. Much is done to "finish" an Image in the Darkroom when working with film, and the same methods can be applied to Digital Images by use of basic software on your Computer.

7) Try shooting from different angles to add a little different look to your Images. Shoot from low down, or high up... and try using "Negative Space" to avoid forcing the eye.

8) Do not be afraid to tell your Model if a certain position is unflattering! I can guarantee that a Model would FAR rather hear "Ok, we have just a little bit of an issue with cellulite on your thigh in this position... can you lift your leg up just a little and tuck in the extra skin for me?" than to get through two hours of shooting, and see one Image after another of themselves that COULD have been wonderful except for that embarrassing view of cellulite on their thigh! LOL!!

9) If you are a Photographer, ALWAYS have your Model sign a "Model Release Form" and get a Photo of them holding their clearly legible I.D.

No matter how much you communicate, no matter how much fun you have, and no matter how thrilled the Model was with the resulting Imagery, there is always the strong chance of a miscommunication or misunderstanding on one or both of your parts, and a Release Form assures that you are BOTH on the same page. Also, it is necessary for Legal Reasons involving age and Copyrighted Materials.

10) And finally, to quote Michael Helms "Shoot what you love, and love what you shoot!"

Thank you for your time and kindness, shy! :glomp:
