'New Yorker' says cover was meant to mock attacks

A satirical New Yorker cover cartoon picturing Barack Obama in the Oval Office dressed as a Muslim, his wife as a terrorist, and a portrait of Osama bin Laden hanging over a fireplace with a burning American flag elicited angry responses yesterday from the Democrat's presidential campaign and his supporters.

But The New Yorker defended the artist and its cover, which illustrates an article titled "The Politics of Fear," as a satirical look at the scare tactics and misinformation being used to derail Obama's campaign. The magazine noted that two serious articles on the candidate's political education and rise in Chicago accompany the piece.

"The burning flag, the nationalist-radical and Islamic outfits, the fist-bump, the portrait on the wall? All of them echo one attack or another. Satire is part of what we do, and it is meant to bring things out into the open, to hold up a mirror to prejudice, the hateful, and the absurd. And that's the spirit of this cover," a New Yorker spokesman said in a written statement.

Obama's patriotism has been questioned during the campaign, such as after his initial refusal to wear a flag lapel pin - a decision he reversed - and when his wife, Michelle, told a rally audience in February that she was proud of America for the first time in her adult life.

I could see you putting that smaller inSIDE the magazine with an article around it to explain it away (like they're trying to here) but to put that shit on the COVER, that's just asking for trouble.

and hey I'm sure it could be pretty well natured sattire. just, nobody's gonna believe that if you put it on ur cover and say "here, this is what we're talking about this month."

dumbasses

hey, when I'm trying to be satirical about racial rights I always resort to degrading and offensive sterotypes. I don't see why it should be different for obama just because he's a democrat.

As a supporter of Obama, I'm appalled that the New Yorker would do something like that.

But as the bitch that I am, I frigging love it.

Haha.

Not too subtle, not too clever. I think it's terrible to do this. It shows a tremendous lack of sensitivity to the way people around the world think. Sure, they have the right, but this looks like one of those late night, after a few too many drinks in the boardroom decisions. It was probably thought to be very humorous at the time, but I think it backfired greatly.
It was the little sneaky portait of Bin Laden on the side that got me: Look world, we're going to have "The Enemy" in the oval Office. Not too subtle, but it shows the world where The New Yorker is really coming from.

If Obama is going to become President there will be a hell of a lot more Political cartoons to come. Is he going to read every newspaper?
Get used to it. Your a target to sell magazines, as always

You've got to appreciate the irony.

That been said, I don't care for the illustration, regardless what it was intended to mean. A lot of people have compared Bush to Hitler, I've yet too see any major right-wing publications satirizing that phenomenon. Why? Because people (particularly republicans) would take it the wrong way. DUH! I guess common sense was in short supply at The New Yorker this month.

The New Yorker is known for it's illustrated covers and usually they're pretty well done. This month's cover, however, isn't drawn all that well and the composition is lacking. On top of missing it's mark as a satire, this cover will probably be posted as "how not to compose a magazine cover" in graphic art classes.

In the end, it's just a magazine cover. Anyone who makes too much this event (boycotts, burnings, condemnation, etc.) needs to reassess their priorities.

As I see it.. since there are people out here who STILL believe he is a practicing Muslim, swore into office in the Koran (never mind the photos of him swearing into office on a bible.) and all the other hype about him and his family plastered in spam emails, the web and in print...regardless of political affiliation, I believe it was an ill thought out idea.
Inside the magazine along with the story would be one thing.. Front Cover without preamble.. was really ill thought out on their part, but also the issuing drama, IMO, is a bit over done.
I mean.. When Rev. Jesse Jackson wants to 'cut your nuts off' you might have bigger fish to fry then closed minded idiot mongers who believe whatever they see/hear without further investigation or, heavens forbid.., actual proof.

I saw the satire for what it was. I just wish they would have included the people the satire was aimed at like Bush Cheney Rove, and the right wing media outlets that just love to foster this image of Obama.

The problem is most people will walk by, see the cover and have instant confirmation of their inner prejudice and ridiculous world view.
