`GeneratingHype on letters, editing and GDship

^lovetodeviate:iconlovetodeviate: reports, August 30
An interview with ex-GD, writer, editor, fascinating person: `GeneratingHype. Here are some tidbits from the interview (which I recommend reading in full):

"Letters presuppose a sort of authenticity, and I truly believe that a story—no matter the form—needs to be authentic and believable.

"Sometimes I wish I had stories such as "I wrote my first published poem at three and a half!" or "I started writing stories at two!", but writing never came easy for me and is still not very easy for me.

The Use of Adverbs in Fiction Writing

=DarcKnyt:iconDarcKnyt: reports, August 29
Adverbs are the endangered species of the adult fiction world. They're frowned on like putting a Baby Ruth bar in a punch bowl at a wedding reception -- not a good idea. They're also indicative of weak writing ... but why? This article covers why adverbs are evil and what you can do to avoid using them.

Writer's Corner Lit News and Links

Contests

A Room of Her Own: [link]
This is a contest that offers a grant of $50,000 to one female writer who loves her work, seeks to improve, is community-minded, and is financially burdened. The application process is lengthy, but it is an amazing program. Don't be daunted!

Robert Frost Foundation Annual Poetry Contest: [link]
Write a poem "in the spirit of Robert Frost." Can submit up to three poems and it does not matter if they have been previously published somewhere. Accepts email submissions. Deadline is September 15, 2008. $10 entry fee.

United Planet Writing/Photo/Video Contest: [link]
Free contest. Judges will choose two writers and two photographs/videos based on the theme "intercultural communication and friendship." Winners will be allowed a two-week stay at a UP world location of their choice (airfare not included) to earn valuable experience and inspiration.

Flashing Swords Fantasy Contest: [link]
Write a fantasy story, between 1,000 and 4,500 words long, inspired by the lovely piece of art. No entry fee. Deadline September 30, 2008. Top winner will receive an e-copy of the issue of the magazine and a standard SF/F magazine contract and will be paid to publish their story in the magazine. They will also receive their choice of a free print copy of the issue OR a mug with the front cover of the issue pictured along with their name and the title of their story. Runners-up will receive a choice between a mug with the cover of the issue or a free print copy of the issue.

Calls for Work

The Green Mountain Review: [link]
Is looking for stories around the themes "Shame" and "Glory" for an upcoming all-fiction double issue. Submission deadline is January 2, 2009.

Collective Fallout: [link]
A queer genre-themed lit magazine seeks fiction and poetry for upcoming issues. Deadline is December 1, 2008. Scroll to the bottom of the page for full submission guidelines.

Level 4 Press, Inc.: [link]
Is a press that seeks contemporary poetry to publish in its many poetry anthologies. Poets included receive a free copy of the anthology per poem included.

Cyclamens and Swords: [link]
Poetry journal out of Israel that seeks poetry, short stories, and artwork/photography that displays a sense of diversity and cultural identity. For poetry, there is a theme per issue (this does not apply to short stories or art/photography, just poetry). The theme for the fall 2008 issue is "Genesis." Poets can interpret this theme in any way. Accepts previous UNpublished poems and short stories only, and also only accepts email submissions. Deadline for the fall 2008 issue is August 31.

Bottom of the World Magazine: [link]
A UK-based online lit magazine that focuses on contemporary fiction from around the world, but which also accepts some poetry. Accepts only previously UNpublished work, and also only accepts email submissions. Authors receive one free copy of the issue in which their work is published.

REMEMBER - even if the "awards" aren't stunning or like a million dollars, as a writer it is fantastic to have a good list of publications in your resume. Often journals, reviews, and magazines won't publish your work unless you have already been published elsewhere. And, of course, the more you put your work out there, the more attention you'll get. Submitting to publications is helping yourself and the literary community. Don't be afraid to strut your stuff!

Are YOU part of an online lit magazine? Note me, I'll feature it in my journal and in future Writer's Corners News!

Great post. I second the thought that anyone that's seriously interested in writing should try writing for and submitting to relevant publications. The experience is good, whether you get accepted or not, and the exposure and being able to list publications on your resume is a significant advantage as you move forward in your writing career. Even if the style of writing for one of these publications or contests isn't one you'd normally be comfortable with, stretch yourself and see what you can do. Versatility is a wonderful ability to exercise.

Also, thanks for the mention of 365tomorrows, we always appreciate the exposure.
