As part of the Project Educate Artistic Nudes Segment Week I present you a interview with the sweet *Conundra!!!
I've posed for drawings on a few occasions, and I deal with the physical strain of holding one position for ten, fifteen, twenty, or thirty minutes for a traditional artist the same way I deal with it for photographers: I grit my teeth and focus on how wonderful it will feel when the blood returns to my extremities.
Do you remember art being a big part of your childhood?
*Conundra - My mother and my mother's parents are artists, and one of my father's many hobbies/interests is photography. I grew up surrounded by creative people doing creative things on a near constant-basis, and for the first few years of my life, I was absorbed by it as they were. I grew up in Southeast Alaska, so there was always something beautiful to inspire me - my mother has boxes full of drawings, paintings, and sculptures from when I was a little girl.
Who was your inspiration as you played with your finger paints?
*Conundra - My grandparents. I used to watch them for hours when I was a wee mite. I also derived a lot of inspiration from my favorite model - my pet chicken, who was very imaginatively named Chicken.
Were you supported by others to create?
*Conundra - My family were wonderfully supportive of the drawings and paintings I churned out by the hundreds, and always encouraged me to do more. When I started going to school, however, my environment was not so encouraging - after my second-grade teacher and peers told me I couldn't draw because my drawings weren't realistic, I was so discouraged that I flat-out stopped creating art and turned to other creative outlets, instead.
What medium did you use as a child?
*Conundra - I experimented with fingerpaints, graphite, charcoal, pastels, watercolors, colored glue, sequins, macaroni, glitter, dried flowers, sawdust, and anything else I could get my hands on. My favorite mediums of all were acrylic paint and sculpey clay.
What is Art to you?
*Conundra - We spend our entire lives percieving the world through one set of eyes, and the gift of art is the ability to see the world from someone else's perspective. One of my favorite quotes is by William Blake - "Man has no Body distinct from his Soul; for that called Body is a portion of Soul discerned by the five senses, the chief inlets of Soul in this age." Art is more than just something beautiful to look at, it is a visual representation of the soul of another; an artist puts their heart and emotions and love into crafting something with their hands and their eyes, and in percieving their creation, we invite them to become a part of us. That's what art is to me - the sharing of who we are with one another through the visions of our imaginations.
What are your aspirations regarding your art?
*Conundra - My aspirations are fairly simple - I want to create a decently sized body of work that I feel truly proud of.
What is your favourite medium?
*Conundra - Glass and alcohol based bodypaint. I don't quite think naked bodies qualify, otherwise they'd be on that short list, too.
If you could, you would?
*Conundra - Live forever, so I'd have enough time to do everything I want to. There are too many wonderful things to do and learn and see in the world to fit into a single lifetime. More realistically, I'd take a few years off from life, learn to blow and sculpt glass, and travel around the world, visiting (and, hopefully, modeling in) all the beautiful locations I've always dreamed of seeing.
How did you find dA?
*Conundra - =wynnesome, who is one of my favorite photographers, kept telling me that I'd love this site and pestering me to join. I finally gave in, and fell in love with DA.
Did you use other outlets for your art?
*Conundra - After I stopped drawing and painting, I took up clarinet, bass clarinet, piano, theater, and writing. If I'm not engaged in some type of artistic
Why dA?
*Conundra - I joined dA for two reasons - one being =wynnesome's influence, the other being that I didn't have a place to post my entire portfolio. Sites like modelmayhem only give you 20 picture slots, and you have to pay to get more. DA has practically unlimited storage space for free, and offers the added benefit of constructive criticism and other feedback, which is often helpful in determining which images will make the cut into my actual portfolio.
What would you like to see here at dA?
*Conundra - More lovely, classically-inspired nudes, more gorgeous gothic/victorian fashion, more paintings done with traditional media, and more talented tattoo artists.
What is your favourite part of dA?
*Conundra - I object to this question, madam - it's far too difficult.
Do you tell offline friends about dA?
*Conundra - Absolutely, and I bug them about joining on a regular basis.
If you could tell the world about dA what would you say?
*Conundra - This site is addictive on a level previously attained only by certain highly illegal narcotic compounds. It is also the largest collection of impressive, beautiful, diverse artwork I've ever seen. There's something here for everyone, no matter their tastes and interests - I can't think of any other sites where one can find naked women, surrealist paintings featuring squid, nintendo mushroom charms, D&D dice jewelry, and pictures of dew-covered insects within a five-minute timespan. Membership should be a mandatory part of life.
When did you start modelling?
*Conundra - Technically, I started modeling around the age of two. When you're part of a family of artists, you don't really have a choice about it. Most people's proud grandparents take a ridiculous number of pictures and run around showing them to everyone. Instead of taking photographs, my grandparents drew and painted me. As far as modeling for photographers is concerned, my first photoshoot was in May 2006. I moved to Ohio for the remainder of that summer soon afterwards, and didn't model again until last summer. I've been fortunate enough to find myself in the company of some fantastic artists out here in Los Angeles soon afterwards, and I've been modeling on a fairly consistent basis ever since.
What were your fears before modelling nude and what were your thoughts about it after the very first session?
*Conundra - Looking back on it, my fears seem quite silly - I was afraid that, because of my not-exactly-mainstream body type, the photographer wouldn't be able to get any images she would be able to add to her portfolio and I was nervous about what my parents and close friends would think if they found out. The experience of modeling nude was so much fun, and so enjoyable, and I was so proud of the resulting images that my fears disappeared. I was also very happy about the added benefit of not having to lug a big suitcase full of wardrobe materials around.
Do you have any fountain of inspiration for your poses (and if so, can you please share it with us?) or instead you have the photographers to think about them for you?
*Conundra - I'm a serious fan of the art of late antiquity and the rennaissance. There are so many wonderful ideas for composition and poses therein, and I like incorporating elements from my favorite paintings in my own work. I'm also very fond of photographs from the French Postcard era - modern-day nude models have quite a bit to learn from the wonderful work of those early 20th century beauties.
If a photographer has a specific idea in mind for a shot, I prefer to have them direct me. I always value input from the other side of the camera.
On most days, there's a lot of laughter and smiling and giggly outtakes; I derive a lot of joy from what I do, and I love sharing that with other models and photographers.
Still on the poses, how long do you generally stay in one pose for a photograph? And also: have you ever posed for drawings? If so, how did you cope with the longer time of posing (any tricks!?)?
*Conundra - The duration of poses depends entirely on the photographer. I've worked with people who want a new pose every second, and I've worked for people with such meticulous attention to detail that I sometimes stay in one position for ten and fifteen minutes at a time while they adjust and perfect the shot. If there are any tricks out there other than stretching every few minutes and grinning and bearing it, I'd love to learn them.
What would be the 5 things (tips-wise) you'd say to a new model that is just starting to pose nude?
*Conundra - Hrm. I've really only got two major tips for a beginning nude model, I'll see if I can stretch it to five.
1. Be comfortable, genuinely comfortable, in your own skin. When you start modeling nude, there's no clothing to hide behind. As a result, you're forced to take a long, hard look at your body's strengths and weaknesses, accept them, and learn to work with and around them. Many models, when faced with this kind of self-scrutiny, develop very unpleasant self-esteem problems. It's incredibly important, as a nude model, to understand that nobody, no matter how perfect they may look, is truly physically flawless. Having quirks and irregularities is part of being human, and you don't have to be perfect (or even close to perfect) to be a good model. Realizing this, and not pressuring yourself to be flawless, is very important, and will save you a lot of insecurity and pain. 1a. In a similar vein, but of enough importance to mention on its own: You will encounter, over the course of your modeling, photographers who don't want to work with you because your bodytype isn't what they're looking for. Never, and may I repeat Never take this out on yourself.
2. Understand the stigma of modeling nude. We're part of a society that has, in my opinion, a ridiculous attitude towards nudity. In our culture, nudity and sex are inextricably linked - nude models are often looked upon as being "sluts" or "whores", and images featuring a nude girl, no matter how artistic, are considered porn by a decently sized portion of the general populace. When you choose to model nude, it's important to understand that you will recieve unfortunate feedback and inappropriate comments, and that there will most likely be people in your life who won't be too terribly supportive of your decision. Also, with the number of employers who do internet searches on prospective employees, it's a good idea to find yourself a pseudonym so your future boss won't stumble across naked pictures of you while they're nosing around the interwebs. I'm by no means saying that a prospective nude model shouldn't pose nude or be open about the fact that he or she is a nude model, it's just important to consider the impact that it will have on certain areas of one's life, and figure out how to work around it.
3. If you're female, don't shy away from shooting with male photographers. It's a mistake I've seen a few models make, based on the assumption that men who shoot nudes are just in it to meet and proposition unsuspecting girls. Granted, there are some photographers out there who are only interested in photographing nude women because all they really want to do is ogle and hit on naked girls, but they are fewer and further between, and easier to screen out, than you might assume. The vast majority of the male photographers I've worked with have been nothing but polite and respectful.
4. Don't limit yourself to nude studio shoots - get out in the big, wide world and have adventures. Nude modeling out in nature is a wonderful experience, whether its on the beach, in the forest, or in the desert, and usually results not only in beautiful images, but fantastic stories.
5. Have fun. Art is about self-expression and satisfaction and creating for the sheer joy of it, and modeling nude can be both incredibly rewarding and a blast, if you have the right attitude and fall in with the right people.
How is it to work with your usual photographers? any different from the occasional ones?
*Conundra - I love shooting with photographers I've worked with numerous times before. I find that when I know someone well on both an artistic and personal level, my familiarity with their style and techniques and their familiarity with my body and my strengths leads to a much higher proportion of images that we're both proud of.
When you model with another person do you usually take some time prior to the shoot to talk with her/him and get to know better or is it just shoot, shoot, shoot? Can you please give us any insight about how your sessions usually go?
*Conundra - I always take time to get to know the person I'm modeling with better. If there's a rapport between yourself and another model, and if you're comfortable together, it shows in the photographs. As far as how my sessions usually go, it depends on who I'm working with, and the mood of the shoot. On most days, there's a lot of laughter and smiling and giggly outtakes; I derive a lot of joy from what I do, and I love sharing that with other models and photographers.
