About comments and popularity

=seya88:iconseya88: reports, July 17, 2008
These are my thoughts about the influence that comments have on the rating system used on DeviantART. If you also ask for hits, comments and suggestions everytime you uplode a deviations please, read.

Starting with my first shots i uploaded here, i always selected the option 'encourage advanced critique', because of i wanted to let everyone who saw my works to know that what i really need aren't favourites and visits, but comments and suggestions that allow me to improve what i do. I always reply to all the comments people do, I like to talk with people who maybe would have chosen other ways to do a shot at the same subject.

Now, you surely could tell me ' perfect, you have comments, you don't care about faves, what's the problem?'. The point is that: as everyone who has an account on that website noticed, on deviantART comments came only if the work uploaded reach a certain level of 'exposure'. When a picture is uploaded, it's put with the images of the same category in the Popular page that everyone can see, and that is ordinated on the basis of a rating system explained in a Deviantart Faq:

FAQ #714: What does the color of the Gallery Stats boxes mean?

"The color of the GalleryStats boxes for each individual deviation is determined by analyzing the ratio of the comments and the favourites of the deviation. The more favourites to comments ratio a deviation has, the darker orange it will be. The less favourites to comments ratio, the whiter it will be. Once a deviation surpasses the ratio of 1 to 1 for favourites to comments, it will stay a dark orange and wont get any darker.

So GalleryStats prioritizes favourites as an indication of a great work. The reason for this is that any deviation can get lots of comments, both from people just saying they don't like it to the owner of the deviation just "chatting" or thanking a commenter. So comments would not be a good way to tell how good a deviation is doing.

Favourites however, are a good indicator of how well a deviation is received by other deviants. So if you analyze the number of favourites to comments ratio, you get a good idea of how well a deviation is faring. For example, a deviation which received 100 comments but only 10 favourites, didn't do as well as a deviation which received 20 comments and 5 favourites, meaning that less people saw it but more of those people added it to their favs as compared to the deviation with 100 comments and only 10 favourites. Thus the reason for using a ratio."

This faq talks about the rating system used in the panel Time Line that the subscribed users can find following the Gallery Stats link. Now, really plausibly the same system is used to order the pictures inside the same category Populars page. Let's see an example.

I search a random word in a specific category, for example 'water' in photography -> conceptual and i extend the search on 'all time' deviations. That (once the page is opened delete the @ in the link and click enter, i cant paste the correct link or it makes an error, I'm sorry) is the result that everyone of you can see as I'm seeing. Let's take the first shots. In the first one faves are about 10 times the number of comments. In the second one 6 times more than it and so on, the ration 'number of faves / number of comments' decrease as soon as going on in the list.

Now, there is something in this system that doesn't convince me. I think that deviantART is not important for the popularity i gain, but for the suggestions and the hints that people give to me. My watchers and who visit my deviations frequently leave comments for help me improving my skills, even if they like my work and decide to add it to their favourites, and I'm really grateful of that. The Faq 714 says "The reason for this is that any deviation can get lots of comments, both from people just saying they don't like it to the owner of the deviation just "chatting" or thanking a commenter. So comments would not be a good way to tell how good a deviation is doing.". I don't agree. Ok, sometimes it happens that a deviation receive only comments and no favs just because it isn't a good work. But if we are talking about deviants who ask suggestions and comments also from who appreciated the work, then this system become sick.

I want to take another example. I post a pictured called xxx. 100 deviants visited it and 90 of them decided to add it to their faves. It seems to be an appreciated pic, isn't it? I want to suppose that only 45 of that deviators decide to leave a comment or a suggestion to the artist. If the artist reply to all of them (as the most of the people do everytime) and just 5 of this deviators reply in their turn, the number of final comments is 85. The ratio of the comments and the favourites of the deviations is minor than 1. I used an example in which the picture received a great number of favourites, and that rarely happens, so you just have to imagine how does that works in a common situations. It's frequent for me to receive 2 comments from the same person in a deviation of mine, and counting my 2 replies we have 4 comments for 1 single fave (if is that assigned).

I don't personally think that everyone have necessary to comment before faving, it's not an oblige. But it's also true that many people here ask everyday for comments and suggestions. Why have they to be disadvantage if they decide to reply to any comment, or if they ask more help? For people who say 'if you care only of comments, then you don't have to ask for popularity', I reply that is really difficult to receive suggestion from new people and good artist if you are always on the last popularity page. I'm not saying that comments should be more considered, i think that the comments number should not to be considered at all.

My 2 pennies. What do you think about that? Suggestion? Critiques? However, thanks to everyone who used his time to read my thoughts.

non è necessario, sto capendo ora che leggo i vostri commenti che alla fine quello che importa davvero è l'arte che io faccio. la cosa più importante che posso fare è aiutare le altre persone che cercano suggerimenti, non chiederne io
