Fractal Art!! What is that? and What Software?

*DusterAmaranth:iconDusterAmaranth: reports, July 22, 2008
Hello, I am Duster Amaranth and It has come to my attention that not many people really know what Fractal Art is and How can you make it.

I have done some Fractals myself, I just started on fractals months ago thanks to awesome tutorials here on deviantart. And I believe you can also try this awesome form of ART!

Ok!

So the Fractal art is created by calculating fractal objects and representing the calculation results as still images, animations, music, or other media. Fractal art is usually created indirectly with the assistance of a computer, iterating through three phases: setting parameters of appropriate fractal software, executing the possibly lengthy calculation and evaluating the product.

"Fractal Art is a subclass of two-dimensional visual art, and is in many respects similar to photography—another art form that was greeted by skepticism upon its arrival. Fractal images typically are manifested as prints, bringing Fractal Artists into the company of painters, photographers, and printmakers. Fractals exist natively as electronic images. This is a format that traditional visual artists are quickly embracing, bringing them into FA's digital realm.

Generating fractals can be an artistic endeavor, a mathematical pursuit, or just a soothing diversion. However, FA is clearly distinguished from other digital activities by what it is, and by what it is not.
"Ken Keller

A fractal often has the following features:

:bulletred: It has a fine structure at arbitrarily small scales.

:bulletred: It is too irregular to be easily described in traditional Euclidean geometric language.

:bulletred: It is self-similar (at least approximately or stochastically).

:bulletred: It has a Hausdorff dimension which is greater than its topological dimension (although this requirement is not met by space-filling curves such as the Hilbert curve).

:bulletred: It has a simple and recursive definition.

Genering Fractals
Three common techniques for generating fractals are:

:bulletred: Escape-time fractals — (also known as "orbits" fractals) These are defined by a recurrence relation at each point in a space (such as the complex plane). Examples of this type are the Mandelbrot set, Julia set, the Burning Ship fractal, the Nova fractal and the Lyapunov fractal. The 2d vector fields that are generated by one or two iterations of escape-time formulae also give rise to a fractal form when points (or pixel data) are passed through this field repeatedly.

:bulletred: Iterated function systems — These have a fixed geometric replacement rule. Cantor set, Sierpinski carpet, Sierpinski gasket, Peano curve, Koch snowflake, Harter-Heighway dragon curve, T-Square, Menger sponge, are some examples of such fractals.

:bulletred: Random fractals — Generated by stochastic rather than deterministic processes, for example, trajectories of the Brownian motion, Lévy flight, fractal landscapes and the Brownian tree. The latter yields so-called mass- or dendritic fractals, for example, diffusion-limited aggregation or reaction-limited aggregation clusters.

Classification
Fractals can also be classified according to their self-similarity. There are three types of self-similarity found in fractals:

:bulletred:Exact self-similarity — This is the strongest type of self-similarity; the fractal appears identical at different scales. Fractals defined by iterated function systems often display exact self-similarity.

:bulletred: Quasi-self-similarity — This is a loose form of self-similarity; the fractal appears approximately (but not exactly) identical at different scales. Quasi-self-similar fractals contain small copies of the entire fractal in distorted and degenerate forms. Fractals defined by recurrence relations are usually quasi-self-similar but not exactly self-similar.

:bulletred: Statistical self-similarity — This is the weakest type of self-similarity; the fractal has numerical or statistical measures which are preserved across scales. Most reasonable definitions of "fractal" trivially imply some form of statistical self-similarity. (Fractal dimension itself is a numerical measure which is preserved across scales.) Random fractals are examples of fractals which are statistically self-similar, but neither exactly nor quasi-self-similar.

I must say that the first time that I read something where you mentioned "fractals" I didn't really understand what you were talking about. I asumed that it had something to do with shapes and reoccuring patterns but those were only guesses. I am very happy that you spelled it all out and added some links to cites with fractal art software 'cause I think I may try one or two.

I must say that I love your featured examples, too. :P :D

Thanks for the article, and the examples. I have always though wtf actually was a fractal, and now, I am creating somes! =D

I don't think that mys fractal actually are good, anyway. They are most like 'accidentally I like this, and gonna call it the beginning of the universe... thing'. Well, I want to get to the part when I search the correcto universe conjunctions to make a perfect fractal, ha! XD

A very weird of art, this is, but I have to get used to this, due to hands problems n_nU
