FEATURES AND TIPS:When you think 'landscape stock' do you immediately think something that is in landscape format? Nay, friends, nay. Or what about all those photos you see of vast expanses of nothing but green fields and grassy paddocks? They're all landscapes, right? Well its true - but so much more as well. See below for a taste-test of some of the awesome landscapes you can see in the stock gallery.
TIPS FOR REFLECTION STOCK:
Portrait/Landscape: Just because you're shooting an actual landscape doesn't mean you can't shoot it both horizontally AND vertically. Sometimes you can give the best focus on a certain part of your scene by switching between the two. Cut trees in half, put the 'rule of thirds' to good use, get some of that sky in the shot... switch it up a little.
Low light: As shown in a couple of the thumbs above - you really don't have to do everything on a sunny day. Even though you won't freeze to death while you're doing it there is still a limit to the kind of creativity you can muster when you're only shooting bright sunny days. If it snows or if it rains or if the fog and mist set in - you can still capture some awesome shots when you work with what nature throws at you.
Urban landscapes: Who cares if part of that old dilapidated house is so rudely in your focus? Throw it in the mix too. There's nothing more interesting than throwing something out of the ordinary or solitary in your photos. It will also give you a good shift from the basic grass and sky to 'grass, sky and whoever might have lived there'. It brings a whole new story to your stock that artists can draw on.
Other elements: When I said 'work with nature' I really meant in. Landscapes don't always have to be paddocks and fields. Desserts show the dry side of what we normally see, muddy and murky swamps give you a little wetness to your photos, and if you're crazy enough to be out chasing twisters - well, at least you have some breeze!
Black and white: Out of the thousands of black and white landscapes I've seen only a handful were truly beautiful. But even though they were beautiful - they were never going to be useful for stock. Don't shoot your landscapes in black and white or convert them to greyscale, let the artists decide. The best thing about nature if the variety of colours, shapes and textures. Don't take one of those away because you want to be arty. Upload it to your art account as photography if you want to do that.
FEATURED STOCKER:A little section to showcase a particular stocker each week. Its not just because I LOVE their stock - but because of how useful it can be and just how generally amazing it is! You will be kicking yourself if you don't take a few moments to check them out!
