"All that glitters is not gold"

(The original form of this phrase was 'all that glisters is not gold'. The 'glitters' version of the phrase long ago superseded the original and is now almost universally used.)

Because gold is a precious metal, the color gold is associated with wealth and prosperity. While all that glitters is not gold the color gold still suggests grandeur, and perhaps on the downside, the excesses of the rich.

It is no surprise that gold symbolizes wealth used wisely, but it is also the symbol of good health. People who favor the color gold are optimistic.

While green may be the color of money (U.S. money, that is) gold is the color of riches and extravagance.

Lavishness is the perception of gold, and regal are those who wear it. Closely related to yellow, orange, and even brown, gold can be seen as both warm and cold. Gold is the highest prize.
Getting the gold medal in the Olympics is monumental, and getting the gold star in kindergarten can have the same effect. Reaching the fiftieth anniversary in a romantic relationship warrants a gift of gold, and wedding bands are typically cast in gold.

The Tibetan Buddhist believes in 5 sacred stones: the crystal for light, turquoise for infinity of sea and sky, coral for life and form, gold for the golden ray of the sun, silver for the light of the moon.
Gold is intimately linked with Divinity and those gods associated with the Sun. It symbolizes wealth and success.

King Midas, in Greek Mythology, was said to have the Midas touch, i.e., the ability to turn everything into gold (the golden touch). This ability became a curse for him after he turned his daughter to gold, and he was cured by Dionysus.

With blue, gold becomes a symbol of credibility and financial dependability. With green or brown, gold becomes a bit more down to earth. And with red, gold becomes a great deal more lavish and rich.

Wearing gold in everyday life increases personal power, and promotes courage, confidence and willpower. Gold chains worn around the neck preserve health.

* Golddigger - someone who feigns genuine interest but is only after a person's money
* Fool's Gold - mica, anything mistaken for gold, worthless
