Continuing with my news articles about wildlife, I present the Red Panda:
Red pandas can also be known as Firefox, Lesser Panda or Shining cat. The Red Pandas distinctive rich red coat provides perfect camouflage in the forests in which it lives where many trees are coated with reddish brown moss. The pandas share characteristics of both bears and raccoons. Red pandas originate in the Himalayas and mountainous regions of northern Myanmar, and China in the provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan. Though agile and good climbers, Red Pandas have a very slow body metabolism meaning they are usually only active at dawn and dusk. The Red Panda eats mostly bamboo. Like the Giant Panda, it cannot digest cellulose, so it must consume a large volume of bamboo to survive. Its diet consists of about two-thirds bamboo, but they also eat berries, fruit, mushrooms, roots, acorns, lichen, grasses, and they are known to supplement their diet with young birds, fish, eggs, small rodents, and insects on occasion
The red panda is the mascot of the Darjeeling international festivals.
There is an estimated population of less than 2,500 mature individuals. The main threat toward the species is deforestation and habitat loss due to the logging industry, agriculture and development. Another reason for the demise of the Red Panda is that its pelt is much prized by newly weds in Chinas Yunnan province where hats made from its fur traditionally symbolise a happy marriage.
Thanks for the feature. Another great article, but you missed out the fact that they are not actually related to the panda, they belong to their own unique family, Ailuridae. I have more red panda images going up later, I was snapping one this morning.
