deviantART at Siggraph '08

lolly:iconlolly: reports, July 29, 2008

deviantART at Siggraph 2008.

deviantART is proud to announce that this year, for our second convention appearance, we will be attending SIGGRAPH 2008 in Los Angeles from Tuesday August 12th through August 14th.
The Special Interest Group on GRAPHics and Interactive Techniques, shortened to SIGGRAPH for obvious reasons, got its start in 1974 and has grown to see attendance numbers rise to 40,000 people.

The attendee list is a veritable “who’s who” in the graphic design and animation world, from legendary ground breaking artists, to industry giants like Adobe, Autodesk, Sony, Disney and many others.

Why SIGGRAPH ?

SIGGRAPH has a long standing history of being a showcase for cutting edge displays of the newest animation, architectural, illustrative, editing and design software and much more. In addition to a phenomenal roster of industry – leading exhibitors, SIGGRAPH consistently brings the audience engaging programming and events. Topics include the future of computer graphics both in the art world and the workplace, panels on the positive and negative impact of technology on society as a whole and even a live event called FJORG, which showcases 16 teams competing to “create the best character driven animation the world has ever seen.”

For a full list of events check out the Attendees page here.

All of this combined makes Siggraph a pretty natural fit for our community.

We also are aware of the fact that despite deviantART being a massive community of over 7 million strong, we are still relatively unknown in the professional world, and even worse, in some cases seen as only being a place for beginners and hobbyists and something an industry professional or an esteemed gallery exhibitor would not have any use for. Well, you know, and we know that is not the case at all and that dA is home to everyone, from people just starting out to people who work professionally in every art driven field you can imagine. We are going to let people at Siggraph know that in the only way we know how: Loud and proud.

What Will dA Be Doing There ?

It wouldn’t really be a representation of dA without artists, so rest assured we will have a solid crew of deviants there representing their own work, the site and the community as a whole.

We will also have Creative Workstations, complete with Wacom tablets as well as a variety of software, from 3D to digital editing and painting, as well as architectural software, available for people to use. We will even have an area for people to sit and sketch as well. And plasmas. Nice big plasma screens showcasing the fantastic art found on the site every single day. Plus a nifty little guestbook station that visitors can sign into and browse deviantART on. Plus, if you are there and sign into it, it will add a selection of your work into the rotation as well, to be displayed for the duration of the convention. There will also be showcases of new site features, film from dA and much more. Plus of course plenty of deviantART staff to speak to as well.

We look forward to seeing you there!

The Public is more familiar with bad design than good design. It is, in effect, conditioned to prefer bad design, because that is what it lives with. The new becomes threatening, the old reassuring.
