I must be getting old!

`morbidthegrim:iconmorbidthegrim: reports, August 1, 2008
I browse dA on a regular basis, I look at the Today section and randomly select things that are sat in there, sometimes I come across things that make me wonder what it is I'm a member of, such as:

Current age:You dun need to know!

Dun? what the hell does dun mean, whats wrong with don't?

I delved further and came across some journals relating to this:

The other day I made my friend so sad because she seen my gallery and said I killed her pride because I could draw really good(I don't agree with her)and now I'm considering not submitting my art(if you can actually call it that)in fear of making her sad again...this really sucks...I liked DA...send your thoughts...if you want...

God, I'm just haveing a crappy day today. I looked at my freind 's gallery and I lost all faith in my own skill as an artist. I mean, I suck! I'm a novice! People wonder why I dun post any deviations, it's because I suck! I'm being hard on myself because I just suck. I can't write I can't draw, and when I'm depressed I get loaded with sarcasm and, 'You're good honey....' from my parents. They're my parents! They're biased! I'm awful, I can't draw, and I might as well just never write or publish ***** or Purity ******!

Is it just me or is the level of maturity dropping like a lead balloon at times? You look at others art and you saw if you like it or not, you offer critique, you don't go sulking in a corner because someone happens to better that you, if anything you learn from those that are better.

Please grow up a little!

I must be getting old as things like this are really irking me, its back to he old argument I have heard so many times on dA, "This is not MySpace" "Its a place for art not a social network"

Sometimes I feel for those that run dA as just maybe its simply too big for any real control here.

By the way I did visit the galleries of those concerned, I didn't stay long!

Sadly it seems common sense and rudimentary command of the English language are failing these days. I'll admit freely that I occasionally slip into 'webspeak' while chatting with friends, but never ever that bad or for long. Usually it's when I feel like goofing off or being terribly, terribly sarcastic.

Joining you in the 'starting to feel old' department, although I'm only twenty myself. I've always been the kind of person in class to sit back and go 'What the **** is wrong with these people'. Now that has expanded to the internet.

Take a peek at my works. Thank you.

I come across people like those too. For example people taking screenshots of movies and then posting them on DA. It is just annoying, I make efforts before I post my art. Is this photo good? I ask myself, and if I don't know I post it and see what people think about it.

Its DeviantART, not DeviantSHIT.

DA has been a victim of it's popularity for a while now ;)

I think every website without real "tight" control is doomed to become a social networking site with people that "dun" know how to properly write a sentence without being "Kewl".

Good thing there are still amazing artists hidden under the pile of junk :D

Cheers!

To me this particular extracts that you make are just due to one single thing: A real lack of attention. You know... then's when everybody goes and says "Nooo :'(((( dun say thaaaa' coz yur so so so so so g00d!!!!!" and etc etc etc.

If you're getting old (which I simply wouldn't dare to confirmate or dismiss ;)) it has nothing to do with the fact that this children just need to be told:

"You feel you're not good enough? You're lucky, there's something you can do. P-r-a-c-t-i-s-e. Get to be as good as you want to be."

I consider DA from the beggining as an... encouragenment tool. I mean... wandering I saw this so good people and thought... It's possible reaching there! Or... Wow! I like that effect, I'm going to test it in my next work!
It's really their bussiness if they don't know how to take advantage of DA's community.

And yes... it's far too big to be controlled. Sadly. And yes. For a lot of people this is like a mix between photobucket and myspace or whatever. Sad too.
But hey! Be happy! Not everybody's like that, and it's not that difficult to avoid the firtsts.

"Please grow up a little!"
Amen for that!

I've visited a lot of brilliant galleries that kicked my own gallery in the ass both up and down and sideways many times, but that's just motivating and inspiring! Just reading the artists comment and look at the pictures information is very informative and instructive, and as I said, inspiring, and if you don't feel that way A) you're weird... or B) you have to learn to love others work and through that, let them inspire you, give you ideas, motivate you to become better and a whole lot of other reasonable things!

(Of course, I have to admit that I've said "oh, damn, look at those" sometimes, and made a I'll-never-be-that-good-face, but that's seldom)

And amen for "don't"!

it's true that you sometimes get pulled down from something great you see but as a real or mature artist, it should encourage you to get to the level or improve your skills with your unique style.

too much young people have been given too much liberty on DA and it's becoming like a usual network where people post anything.

I would be happy if DA could eliminate the free version and make it subscription only, or limit the age group, though it will be quite awkward because art is not about age.

anyway, nice post and i agree with what you stated!

This is sad indeed, but the fact is; there is really a lot that can and should be classified as "art" (now that word does not have a final definition attached to it by my book with a setup of different principles and rules) however there is too much of nonsense on dA which can only be categorized as either a waste of my time or a waste of yours.

Earlier this morning I kept on pressing that dice icon, hoping to find something which would get my attention. Honestly I kept on pressing it and after 45 minutes of doing so, not even one single deviation got to me, and I do believe my taste is pretty vast and I constantly try to widen my point of view.

Around half of what I observed was either a print screen of some kind or pictures taken with a mobile phone for eventual “MySpace” usage. (No I'm not claiming only those who can afford a digital camera should be uploading their work...) But e.g. if one is so self occupied so this person uploads something between five-seven different shoots a day of her or himself, then this is obvious: the only reason for this person doing it is and will remain: getting attention, which they are justifying with the so called “support” from the superficial club.

Which leads me to the following conclusion; this place whatever they or we might want to call it or have plans for should be more limited. They are charging the members for the services so why not make it more "attractive" for those who really put loads of time and effort both for themselves but also for the sake of site? One thing they could do is: an ordinary member can only add one-five deviation a day, those who are subscribing, five-ten deviations and prints a day.

Now this might indeed sound like a drastic solution to a problem which doesn't seem to bother the majority or even recognized. Surely loads of different attitude types as "I-m-an-artist" and the others which I chose to categorized as those with no perspective at all, "ignorant-kids" will leave this site for good, at least this is what I truly believe.

There should be clear differences between this place and other sites where uploading an imagine on is possible, as it is right now there is not even one single particular noticeable dissimilarity, not as far as I can tell. Which even allows this place to grow ”bigger” with each passing second but that does not mean it automatically becomes ”better”? As I see it, it's a mess, if you are lucky you find some people and you put them on watch, but really that doesn't satisfy me, if you put something up as "daily deviation" then why is it that I as one who is a member (not calming that I'm an artist or so) can't even find anything interesting in that daily selection? Perhaps I'm blind...

The ideal scenario, place for me is somewhere I can grow and in that growing I maybe, perhaps, someday can evolve my perspective, knowledge and all the rest there is to it so actually I can become some form of an artist. A place to share what I put time, effort, thoughts, feelings and so and so into and a place others are doing somewhat the same. A place where mutuality is what members are aiming for beside what the individual goals might be.

I adore this place for its multitude in all its various aspects, and obviously not everyone have the English language as their first language, and yes there are those who doesn't even have it as the fourth but still they are trying to communicate in the most proper ways to get understood and to understand. But for some reason slicing the main tool of communication has become a way of keeping it "real" which also includes not growing up mentally, furthermore, not embracing changes, and not evolving is the exact opposite of what being or even becoming an artist might be defined by, or is.

For those who got offended by my writings and want to simplify it all under "doesn't like kids" well go and have a good one at it, this is exactly why your stand point is only defined with simplified meaningless accusations, which is also the very reason behind why you are not getting "better" which clearly is far from being an artist with one or some talents.

Thank you for the article mate, I had loads on my mind ;)
:icondennischunga:
what the hell is with the word "dun" ??? is it so hard to spell "don't"
hahahah - Mike, the simple problem isn't that it's turning into myspace, it's just that those people who write such things are typically very young teenagers. hopefully they will learn to keep the emotional stuff out of DA, and just keep it artistic. us old folks know better :0 hehehehe
