Better Digital Photography Magazine-Free online

^kkart:iconkkart: reports, November 26
From the Publishers of "What Digital Camera" and "Amateur Photographer", IPC Media today has announced a new online photography magazine, "Better Digital Photography" that people can read free and fully online, it is also interactive with embedding video tutorials from the magazine and mouse-over tips. Aimed at the entry and intermediate level photographer, it is heavily devoted to equipment and technique-focused photography content.

From the IPC Media website:

Publishing director Alex Robb says: “This is an exciting and innovative new venture for the photo portfolio. The editorial team have worked incredibly hard to create bespoke content, including technique videos and other interactive content. I am delighted that we have secured distribution to around two million photographers to ensure that as many people as possible benefit from the excellent tips and advice. Better Digital Photography is a further indication of how IPC continues to innovate in this competitive sector.”

Editor Mat Gallagher adds: “We wanted to create a product that helps the reader expand their knowledge, while being easy to use. It is thanks to the talents of art editor Steve Crabb that we have managed to produce such a visually stimulating and accessible magazine that surpasses anything else in the market place.”

My thoughts, this is downright awesome and VERY well done, it is like looking at an actual magazine, but the fact that it has videos embedded within for tips, tutorials, and techniques, make this even better! You can also subscribe for free, via email for upcoming issues, make personal notes within the magazine, and download a copy to your hard drive. GO GET IT!

Lions

=kat1e-:iconkat1e-: reports, August 3, 2008
Lions

This is my latest wildlife instalment of information and art features on lions.

Lions live across areas in Africa and Asia. There are debated to be 12 known subspecies. The major differences between these subspecies are location, mane appearance, size, and distribution.

Dominant male lions have a harem of females which do the majority of the hunting. When a younger male fights a dominant male for control of the harem and succeeds in chasing the older male away he will kill all of the cubs and mate with the females.

The lion is the second largest feline after the tiger. Lions live for 12-16 years in the wild and 25 years in captivity.

Lions hunt by ambush. Their main prey includes medium to large-sized mammals such as antelope, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, warthog and deer, but they will also scavenge for food. Asiatic lions in particular also prey on domestic cattle. Lions can survive for long periods without water, obtaining moisture from prey and plants.

Most wild cat populations are declining and their habitats are shrinking. As human settlements expand and more land is taken for agriculture, prey becomes more and more scarce. This forces cats to kill domestic livestock, which infuriates farmers who then take measures to protect their stock. And so the vicious circle continues.

Wild cats are also illegally hunted for their skins or for trophies and it is this international trade, which peaked in the 1960s and '70s, that has been the biggest cause of the massive decline in most cat species, even though the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species bans trade in many of them.
