While I do think DSLR cameras are great, it is possible to take some excellent photos with a decent point and shoot camera. Whether you don't have a DSLR at all, or maybe you just don't have one with you at the time, but you see something that's just too awesome to leave unphotographed. I, and a few others, have some tips to keep in mind for taking great photos even when you don't have complete control over the camera itself. Some of these tips are even just in general, no matter what kind of camera you have.
- See what you can control on your camera. I know I said tips for when you can't control your camera, but it's still good to know what you are in control of.
- Try to avoid using the flash if you can. It can be very useful sometimes, but usually it will make pictures look flat. From my experience, the flashes on point-and-shoot cameras are generally way to bright as well. Try to get light coming from an angle rather than from the same direction as the camera. This way you get more shadows and a sense of depth.
- Use a tripod if you can, especially if you're not using flash. If you don't have a tripod, find a tree or a wall or anything sturdy to lean up against to try to steady the camera.
- If you don't know of it already, look up the rule of thirds. This makes pictures much more pleasing to the eye than a random placement of the subject.
- "I think the biggest point is to remember that it's still the same stuff with composition, exposure etc that comes into play there...
- The DoF of P&S is quite wide because of the small sensor. To isolate the subject, you might have to get some contrasts from lighting or colors, for example." (*theFouro)
- "Composition is key with any camera and doubly so for PaS cameras.

Those are just some basic tips (and a really useful link from =Betweenshades) to begin with. I really hope they help.
