"Current deviantART policy defines 'Art Theft' to be any situation where a user takes the original art, photography, or writing of another person (a 'third party' ) and then either misrepresents the original, unaltered work as one of their own creations or includes the work (either altered or unaltered) in a new image"
--deviantART FAQ #8
I've been coming across a lot of art theft here on deviantART recently, and I was surprised by how many people

ed the stolen artwork! So this article is to help the average deviant detect art theft!
Tips on detecting art theft- Image size: If the fullview size of the image is very small (like thumbnail size) and it doesn't seem as though it should be that small, check out the rest of this deviant's gallery and see if it seems like his/her work.
- Watermarks and Signatures: If you see a watermark or signature and can read it, look to see if the watermark contains a different username or name than the person who uploaded it. Check to see if that username you saw in the watermark is a deviantART account, and if it is, search that peron's gallery to find the same deviation.
- Artists Comments: If the artist's comments on the deviation seem to be as though it is a comment from someone other than the original artist, do a little research to see if the uploader really created the deviation. Example: "I think its cute :3," "Found this somewhere," or "This guy looks cool"
- Have you seen it before?: If you've seen the art somewhere else before, try and remember where you saw it and check to see if the uploader really created the deviation.
Don't report something if it's not art theft!Make sure you read the artist's comments and see if the deviation is a "collaboration," "art trade," or if something like "lineart by" or "colors by" is mentioned in the comments. These are not considered art theft because the deviation is the result of two people working together, thus both artists should be credited (which they usually are).
How to find the original artwork- Read the watermark/signature!: If you see a watermark or signature and it seems to have a username in it, type in that username . deviantart .com (without all the spaces and replace "that username" with the username you saw in the watermark/signature) into your address bar. If that user exists, check his/her gallery to see if you can find the same deviation. If you do, you can copy the URL of the original deviation and include it in your report when you report the stolen art.
- Recognize the deviation?: Then see if you have the original saved in your favourites. If you can't find it there, do a quick deviantART search and see if you can find it.
Remember, art theft is very serious. Please report any art theft you see! Thanks for reading! Comments are always appreciated, and I hope this article helped!

You are worth dying for. The Son of God thinks so anyway.
great article!! very good pointers
I actually had doubts before joining DA, since I know of art thefts going on. They should know that the original artists worked hard on their deviation(s) and deserves the credit!
