S is for Series

*Cattereia:iconCattereia: reports, December 4
Works in a series give the artist the ability to show more than just one perspective or emotion in a work. Working in such a way can also allow the artist to show time which can be difficult to show in just one panel.

"I use digital and sometimes traditional paint. On rare occasions I like to do some photomanipulations. Generally, just me and my slow-ass computer. Photoshop also helps. I love to read comics and to go to surreal art exhibitions, they inspire me a lot as I love the way they take reality and twist it to give it meaning. I do not have a favourite artist but some of the top ones would be; Joseph M. Linsner, Michael Turner, Dali, Mark Chaghall and many on DA too. My favourite of my own must be the seasons that I'm working on because I feel that they represent a true part of myself and the way I see the world."

"I used Photoshop ps3 to create these new digital artworks. I became bored with doing traditional artwork (colour pencils, scanned to my computer) and not having much time to colour the huge amount of line art scattered around my study, I decided to learn how to colour using the latest Photoshop. Once I figured out how to colour with PS, everything changed! My artist's block disappeared, and I was able to produce much better stuff! I try to make use of all the features in PS cs3 and tutorials online help a lot! Photoshop ps3, plugins, indesign for digital art, colour pencils for traditional. No tablet, I'm stuck with the mouse. Most of my art is inspired by the Halo games and I'm also inspired by comic artists (too many to mention!) My favourite artwork is Hunter Becomes Prey. This took me hours to do and is my best digital pic to date."

“My name is Scott, I'm 22 years old and from PA (USA). Thank you for taking the time to check out my designs and artwork I use a number of different programs but Photoshop and illustrator are the main weapon in my arsenal. I originally went to school for computer animation years ago and used Photoshop to create textures but I noticed I was having more fun in Photoshop then in the CG programs... So I packed up and left for a design school where I learned just about every program and ever since then I been working with Photoshop, illustrator, etc everyday. The equipment I use is both a MacBook Pro and a PC... as you can tell I much prefer a Mac. Inspiration is Key, anything and everything can inspire my design and artwork, from going outside to looking other people’s artwork (DevArt is a great source of inspiration). When it comes to my "Beauty and the Beast" set, I had huge inspiration from one of my favorite digital artists, Alberto Seveso. He has amazing sense of style. I wanted to take what I could from his sense of style and tweak it until it became a style of my own. I am a firm believer that emulating is not the way to create art but taking what you learn and try to do better. If I had to choose my personal favorite in my gallery I would have to say the entire "Beauty and the Beast" set, mostly because I am always bias toward my latest creations, due to my compulsion to always create something better then the last. Always try something new and never give up!”

"I'm Naomi, I'm 23 from Melbourne, Australia. On Deviant Art I'm a photo manipulator, with a fantasy/noir bent. Offline I'm an all-round Graphic Designer/Web Designer and Image Maker (in my final semester of a Bachelor of Design at Uni). I guess my strength as an Image Maker evolved during my first degree in Visual Arts & Design. I always wanted to be a Graphic Designer but Art was an unanswered question and that course offered the best of both worlds. During that course I still wanted to progress as a designer, and my Art lecturers were very supportive of me building a relevant folio. As Art is mostly image making, I did mine digitally to keep a foot in design but also fulfil the art criteria. I drifted between collage, assemblage and digital art, until I got a digital camera there was no going back. The best thing about being a designer learning in an art course was that you had to learn everything yourself. No one could force feed me rules and techniques, my work was constantly critiqued by Art lecturers so I reached a deeper level with my work than I probably would have if I went straight into a design course. The structure of an art course has only 2 deadlines; mid-semester and finals, as opposed to every second week in a design course, the lifestyle of an art student allowed me the luxury of just sitting at the computer for 4 hours a day experimenting in Photoshop, so my skill evolved quite fast. During my design course, the deadlines haven't allowed me that amount of time to play, I've only just recently got back into my old pattern. I use Fuji Finepix s35000 semi-manual, Adobe CS3, pencil & moleskin notebook and an iMac & PC.
The city and the sea inspire me the most, as I'm always travelling between the two for some time. In the city I love the clash of cultures and classes, whereas by the sea (where I live) it's a healthy challenge trying to find inspiration from your local environment that you see everyday. I also have a good collection of art and design books to keep me going, thousands of bookmarks to inspiring sites and the good folk on dA. As far as professional designers and image makers go, I fell in love with Phantomresearch:foundation after I bought their book Romantik which was like my dream folio! Historically, I love referencing the Victorian/Art Nouveau artists like Alfons Mucha and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, they had an amazing outlook on life which I find similar to my own. Also the 60s psychedelic rock posters, Tim Burton and the current breed of whimsical feminine illustrators get the creative juices flowing. On Deviant Art I'm loving *illeg4le's polaroids, too many photo manipulator's to mention and :devLarafarie: whom I've loved watching her gallery develop from the start. However, Madonna is my muse, she's the #1 image maker of them all!
Favourite piece from my gallery would have to be Mer Girl, it's most representative of my aesthetic and was created true to my process; listening to Madonna and purely responding. My dream is to design for music!"

"[I do] traditional pencil and ink drawings. I drew pictures instead of paying attention in school. I have 4 mechanical pencils. A .3, .5, .7. and a .9 with lead 4b to 6h I find myself inspired to become better by many of the artists on DA. My favorite artist is Luis Royo because he can draw some drop dead gorgeous women. I would have to say my newest picture, Diabolus Stagnum, [is my favourite] because I could see a marked improvement over my past work."

"I am a 17 year old photographer and I started taking photographs from a very young age. I've only been studying photography and taking it really seriously since I started college in 2006. I’m going to University to study photographic art in September and I'm really looking forward to learning there. I don’t really have a preference on film or digital but digital at the moment is more practical. So the camera I use at the moment mostly is a Nikon D70 which doesn’t have the mega pixels others have but I think it produces pretty good images with the lenses etc.
My inspiration really depends on what kind of project I am doing. So I'm inspired by anything and everything really. Right now I have an idea using news, my last one in college was on stress so... Its mostly various issues.
My favourite photographers range from Ansel Adams to Carl Warner and many more.. They're all inspirations too. That’s really just because Carl Warner is just something different with still life and combined with social issues is really what I would like to create.
I don't really have a favourite piece that I've created because I usually like my newest work most.
So that would be Lubitel Face but... I'm not really sure. I like that one because its something different with the camera and hair over it."

"I'm 21, I have a rare degenerative neurological genetic condition which affects my co-ordination and makes walking impossible. It also means things like writing, painting, drawing are difficult things for me to accomplish. A lot of things take me two or three times or even more to achieve than a normal person. I was diagnosed with this 5 years ago and I have had a normal childhood and done my best to try to keep things normal.
The bulk of my artwork is digital and it is mostly of the vector variety. I can draw observational studies (still) life (pencil/graffiti/ink/et al) and also paint abstract most commonly in oil paints and acrylics. I just have a lot more digital artwork especially because it can be printed and shared much easier.
I have always enjoyed art since before I can remember. A lot of how I discovered mediums is just through natural happy accidents. My dad was an art teacher so there where often paints, pencils, bags of clay and reams of paper all around the house. I got into digital art much more recently. I'm still relatively new to it. I started out with pixel art and just tried other things like photomanips (I rarely upload them), digital paintings (rarely are they good enough to add to my gallery). I got into vectors because I enjoy flash animation. We had flash in college and I now study computer animation at university. So while in traditional media I like to give a sense of movement in digital art I prefer stark contrast and clean shapes.
I use my vista powered computer mostly but I also have a shelf of art stuff and an apple laptop.
Dreams mostly [inspire me]. I go to bed and when I wake up the next day I have an idea for something. There are of course other inspirations like other people and avoiding the feeling of failure is a good motivator too.
Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol two of my favourite pop artists ever. I like to think some of my work has a bit of Lictenstein flavour. He is definately one of the biggest influences.
Pablo Picasso. A great cubist. I really like a lot of work from the cubism movement.
Salvador Dali. I adore the surreal style of Dali. I have been to several Dali Exhibitions I just really find his artwork incredible. I would like to learn to digitally paint properly so that I can do some proper surreal art in the future. At the moment though the images from my dreams have to wait in my head. Along with a lot of things. There are not enough hours in the day sometimes.
There is a piece of work I created a while back for GCSE art. It's a mixed media (mostly painting/airbrush and detail is added with coloured pencils) of a soldier aiming a rifle facing you (facing forwards) half of his face is behind the gun, behind him is a pile of bodies around a flag and one almost silhouetted soldier holding the flag up. There is a fitting backdrop and there is dust at the front. At the top it says Victory in a font similar to that used for the Return To Castle Wolfenstein (pc game) I haven't seen the peice in 6 years but it is my favourite thing and I spent the best part of 14months on it. It's about A1 in size. It's my favourite because of how it exists in my memory and it really made me feel that art was important. It had a message in it too. It was deep and meaningful and obviously I had worked very carefully and dilligently to create it for a very long time."

“My name is Leyna. Though I've used traditional media in the past, I'm currently playing with digital painting, using a Wacom tablet and Painter X. My favourite artists include Holbein, Waterhouse, Mucha & Michael Whelan.
I do fanart for live-action SF TV series. Fannish challenges have been my recent inspirations, particularly Alternate Universe (AU) challenges. These challenges not only involve making the characters recognisable, but translating them into an entirely new setting or genre in a way that makes sense for their personalities and for the show.
My favourite piece is my most complex AU: [link] It is flawed but it forced me to try out new things.”

"Hello my name is Nicole and I'm 29. I use an SLR canon digital camera to begin with composing the girls in my studio, then I take shots that I really like and compose them into art with CS3. In Photoshop I use the wacom tablet to help me out with some of my work. My favorite medium will always be charcoal and pencil. My inspiration is books, music, and life around me. My favorite artist is Stephanie Pui-Mun Law, when you see her work in water colors they make your imagination come alive. My favorite photographer will always be Vincent Wolf, his photographs make you forget all the evils of the world. My favorite piece by him would be Patients for Peace. My favorite piece I have done would probably be tranquil because of the story behind it ."

"I draw usually with pencils, I use koh-i-noor's art set (2H-8B, I suggest to buy this one, it ROCKS!!) I use ink too and if I use ink I use a lot of colors too, and I use polycolors, they too are from koh-i-noor, but I also have 72 (aquarelle) color pencil set by... koh-i-noor XD
[I got into] normal pencils when I started to draw, I always used pencils, also color pencils.. but I don't like colors so much. Ink came from 7th grade in school, where I had to use ink. It was lots of fun so I decided to start drawing with ink for fun, and relaxment, and I can tell you folks, it works WELL.
Love, every word my darling tells me is so much, it creates inspiration for me
Da Vinci [is my favourite artist]. I mean, is there anybody who has been more successful? I doubt it. He did the Mona Lisa, he invented the helicopter, he did so much more..he is my king, hail VINCI! And Mona Lisa, that's best work ever, you know.. those eyes.. they got SOUL. He was able to draw the very soul of person, he was lot better than his master. he was THE artist.
[My favourite piece] has to be Ying, it's about my dear *arina, she saved my life, she made my life so heavenly that she deserves more than just eternal love, she is so amazing for me that she has to be memorized somehow, and at same time it makes me to use as much skill I have as possible, and making it look good! I mean, when I was drawing Ying, I was drawing with love, with most beautiful feeling in world.. I had motive to do my best and so I did all I can, but.. I learned a lot too.. "
