Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art

~renacer9:iconrenacer9: reports, December 10
Sonar, the advanced music and multimedia art festival, takes place in Barcelona every year during three days in June. Sonar’s diverse artistic offer splits between the Sonar by Day activities (in the CCCB and MACBA venues) and Sonar by Night (Fira Gran Via M2 L’Hospitalet), together with some simultaneous gigs like the performances at L’Auditori.

At the last festival edition, more than 75,000 people enjoyed the fine selection of an artistic programme which combines the electronica headliners together with hundreds of emerging artists and DJ’s representing the most updated music and new media trends within electronic culture.

Sonar is the meeting point both for a worldwide audience looking for the newest, as well as the professionals, looking for the perfect environment for business and networking.

This coming year the festival takes place on 17, 18 and 19 of June and for the first time in 17 editions, Sonar will have two simultaneous editions. Together with Xacobeo (Compostela’s Jubilee), the festival takes the Way of Saint James and celebrates both in A Coruña and Barcelona. A double-edition event, the usual Barcelona and this extraordinary one, which will be named Sonar Galicia.

Sonar has also regularly crossed over the Spanish borders, since 2002, travelling with events all over the world, decentralising electronic music by showcasing new talent, often local, and the all time classics within the genre. Sonar has travelled to London, NY, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Frankfurt or Tokyo, and more.

An urban event, and a discovery platform. Sonar is a pioneer and influential date on the European cultural calendar thanks to its unique entertainment offer and the singularity of its emplacement.

muSEEc - Concerts and audio visions

*devupics:icondevupics: reports, August 20, 2008
muSEEc contains experiences, visions, and suggestions in their evolution from music to images. 35 pictures, some still unpublished, describe the activity of a young photographer, Francesco Castaldo, who focused his activity on live music events. muSEEc is music for both ears and eyes. It's about the performative side of art, the strength of an image capable of speaking about music, about the impetus or the grace, the joy or the sadness, the exact feeling created and shared by the band and the audience during the concert, the unique and intimate atmosphere of a live event. The show is in fact the deepest side of music, a one time occasion between audience and singer, the sense of awareness of being witnesses of an unrepeatable moment.

Castaldo's recent pictures, young and lively, are full of irony and pathos, emotions and feelings shared by very different artists. Apocalyptica's cellos remind of the sweet undulating motion of the sea, in deep contrast with their heavy metal. The Kiss, Lenny Kravitz, Bullet For My Valentine and R.E.M. are some of the bands portrayed, as well as some Italians: a somehow tender Ligabue, a bright Samuel from Subsonica, and Francesco Renga, determined and sweet. The pictures are divided in sections covering a familiar route: the one of our music.

muSEEc is looking at the black and white shades as well as at the colours of the lights. It's about listening, when the instruments in the fore remind us we're staring at the music itself. muSEEc is also about the details the audience can't see. The suffering expression of a musician, a liberating smile after founding the right answer in the notes. The exhibition is organized in three sections, three connecting paths, chosen emotionally rather than rationally. Emotional like the effect of music on the audiences.Stage colours, instruments as protagonists, artists' close-up: three moments that make a full circle around music, the real protagonist in this first exhibition of Francesco Castaldo's works.

Francesco Castaldo was born in Rovigo in 1978. His passion for music has roots in his experience as a musician in different local bands. He moved to Milan in 2000 where he worked for a multinational web company. At the age of 12 he started taking pictures with his father's reflex. He soon discovered a real addiction for digital photography, then realising and recognising its limits. The turning point in concert photography arrived when the Dream Theater published his pictures in their tourbook. Francesco works successfully for music websites, magazines, bands and promoters bringing his concert visions to a wide public.
