How to Commission an Artist

*ArynChris:iconArynChris: reports, November 16
A comprehensive guide to commissioning, based on my personal experiences and observations. This guide does not address hosting contests, nor does it specifically address the unique challenges of commissioning through specific websites, though some typical scenarios are mentioned in passing. Topics include choosing the artist, why it's important to make sure you can afford it, how to contact the artist, payment, what WIPs are and why you might want to see them, and legal rights of both parties. Legal rights are discussed at the beginner level and are NOT in depth here.

Comments or Cruelty?

=SeductiveByatch:iconSeductiveByatch: reports, August 21, 2008
I know I don't usually make a big deal about the negative comments I get on my nude images.
I am so used to every single time I post something in artist nudes or fetish the rude and insensitive come crawling out of the wood work.

Do you know I got a comment the other day that told me to die with my children? Some one wished death on my children because they did not like the fact that I am a fat person who allows herself to be photographed nude. I have two children a son and a daughter, ages 14 & 25. Do my children know about my modeling? Yes they do. Do my children have a problem with my posing nude or taking nude photos of others? No. they don't.

Yet every single time I do it someone and usually more than one person takes it upon them selves to point out how ugly, fat, or old I am. And then proceeds to tell me how not to be these things or tell me how these things are an affront to their sensibilities. Without ever once taking into consideration my feelings, the way those words may make me feel. Do they really think a mother, any mother would like to hear a perfect stranger tell her, her children should die because of her choices in art?
Do these same people ever think how their mother or sister or any one else that they cared about would feel if these same hateful, hurtful words were said to them?
Do they stop to think how they themselves would feel if their work were judged solely on the fact that someone didn't like how they personally looked? I know I am fat, I know I am old. I don't try to hide these things but there can be beauty in old and fat, in thin and young, in old and thin, or not so thin and not so old or young. We are all individuals and we all have a beauty of our own, not everyone will ever like everything but that doesn't mean you have to be so hateful and so hurtful in your comments on other people works.
I have known people who have noted me after seeing some of the comments I have gotten and they told me how a similar comment made them cut themselves or make them selves sick trying to get to be that perfect size. Or just depressed them so badly they lost all interest in anything that used to bring them joy. I have also gotten notes from people who have told me that seeing my images made them feel good about themselves for the first time in a long time. And that seeing how I handled the (I will be nice here and not sink to their level of name calling)rude people and their comments helped them to find a way to deal with the comments they had gotten.
In the words of Rodney King "Can't we all just get along?"
If you see something you don't like, pass over it and move on to something you do. Don't waste your time using rude comments and insults all that does is make you look bad.

Please think before you write on someone work, your mood may change but the words are still there to hurt each and every time they are viewed. Think of what it would feel like if you were the one receiving that comment.

OK I will step down off my soap box now...
But please remember the old saying "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" or "if you can't say something nice say nothing at all."

This is not to say you should not critique, but learn the difference between critique and cruel.

~Theresa

Definitely a keeper, kiddo... I'd gotten rude comments on both my "Marcia" and "CK Marshall" shots because they didn't fit someone's mold of what beauty is.

I do believe that the focus is too much on the model, and not enough on the overall artistic integrity of the piece.
:iconprintsfromlaura:
I hear, I agree and I support! Reading the comments on your latest photos made me start writing a new journal entry, its not done yet, but it will be soon. These thigs just pisses me off, so much!

I'm glad that you're saying something. :)

It's not fair that people should say these things - so it isn't their cup of tea. It isn't their cup of tea.

I don't exactly like this sort of art either - but it's what you like, it's how you express yourself, and that's what matters.

:)

i had an idea for a really clever signature.

...

but i forgot.
:iconshalotka:
Lots of truth in this article.

I completely agree that commenting is needed only for sharing some impressions about the art not for pumping up one's own ego with bashing others. When I find a poor piece on dA or something not worth watching I don't bother commenting at all.

Of course that doesn't apply to your art because provocative as it is, it is also very good :) I have noticed that most people are very immature and for them femity means only something that is childish, doll-like and "innocent". As if they really couldn't cope with the fact that women can be sensitive, bitchy, young, old, caring, seducive, depressed, funny or all that at once and that's exactly what makes them women.

Take care!

I hope this will bring this issue to light so the administrators can do something about it.

I would like to use this in an even bigger story featuring this and other entries from BBW's and the way the public sees them. It will be a future journal. You will get credit, as will the other entrants. Can I do this? Let me know. Fight the good fight. Real women have curves.
