Green Energy

*ProjectEarth:iconProjectEarth: reports, August 22, 2008
Hello everyone! This is ~ProjectEarth here! Today we'll talk about Green Energy! Please read this news article and :+fav: it if you like it!

:earth: The Term

The term Green Energy is used to describe sources of energy which are considered environmentally friendly, non-polluting, and therefore may provide a remedy to the systemic effects of certain forms of pollution and global warming.

:earth: Some definitions

There are several working definitions used for green energy such as:

:bulletgreen: An alternate term for renewable energy

:bulletgreen: Energy generated from sources which do not produce pollutants (e.g. solar, wind and wave energies)

:bulletgreen: Energy generated from sources which are considered environmentally friendly (e.g. hydro (water), solar (sun), biomass (landfill) or wind)

:bulletgreen:Energy generated from sources which produce low amounts of pollution

:bulletgreen: Energy that is produced and used in ways that produce relatively less environmental impacts

:earth: A whole world of possibilities

Green energy includes natural energetic processes that can be harnessed with little pollution. Anaerobic digestion, geothermal power, wind power, small-scale hydropower, solar power, biomass power, tidal power and wave power fall under such a category.

Some organizations have specifically classified nuclear power as green energy, but environmental organizations indicate the problems with nuclear waste and claim that this energy is neither efficient nor effective in cutting CO2 emissions, excluding it from clean energy.

Ignore the comment above. This signature is way too cool.:peace:

just curious but how can nuclear energy not be effecient in reducing co2 emissions? I understand that the waste stays radioactive for years, but the amount of waste that a nuclear power plant generates is very low especially when compared to a coal power plant

There's the large energy costs associated with mining and processing the uranium (usually mined at a grade around or below 4g/t). Once it's out of the ground and in metallic form, it needs to be enriched and processed. This of course leaves plenty of unusable 238U to deal with before it's even been converted into uranium dioxide fuel pellets. Not to mention all the energy expended in dealing with the various waste products, which remain dangerous for a very long time.

On top of that, uranium is another limited resource, which we will eventually run out of.

Hope that made sense.

okay, I'm still partial to nuclear power plants though, I live near one, and it employs lots of people in the area

I am reading Field Notes from a Catastrophe (Man, Nature, and Climate Change) by Elizabeth Kolbert... I am actually being forced to read this as a summer book by my college, but I think it's very interesting..

It's by this woman who traveled the world to find PROOF that global warming is real. And it is, all these things happening in the world are not coincidental.

If you are interested in finding out what is happening to the earth and what people around the world are doing about it, you should pick up a copy. Its like $13.95, but it's very concise and informative.

Unfortunately, there are some scientists who proved by physics that even if we stopped CO2 emissions altogether, the intertia of the earth getting warmer will not stop... Of course the earth won't be as hot as it COULD be if we continued being clumsy with what we stuff up in the air, but it'll definitely be hot, and different, by the middle of the century. But it won't be destroyed.
