B-funk’s work caught my attention the moment I saw it, and the longer I kept looking at it, the more I started to discover within this work. I love it when an illustration guides your eyes from one place to another, surprising you while discovering many hidden secrets along the way.

Concept: The concept of this kind of forbidden love is a strong one, and many stories alike have been told in the past, yet it is not the most cliché one out there. Death and his mortal lover, their only chance of being together is a glance, a moment in a lifetime. Very tragic and strong, a bond of endurance and love. A good concept for this forbidden love contest.

Effort: What I personally liked about this illustration is the amount of details and the correct use of symbolism. Death’s character has been portrayed very well, in a unique and somewhat surreal way. From the candles within the wings, to the subtle design of the scythe, the pose and composition, the subtle presence of the skeletons and apples, and so on... The same goes for his mortal and quite innocent lover, from the beads of the broken necklaces, to the lifeless face and subtle touch of his hand. The details flow over from death’s dark form to the mortals lighter form, almost like the darkness is absorbing the mortal. This work shows that the artist is knowledgeable about the symbolism connected to this theme.

Skill and technique: Good use of coloring contrasts, the subtle and down toned reds and greens used in this illustration make sure that there is a focal point in this illustration. At first glance you see what you need to see, suiting the theme. Figures and pose are well drawn, and the composition looks good. Highlights, details and symbolism have been applied in balance.

All in one, this piece stood out for me because the concept was great, well portrayed, skilfully drawn, and a great deal of effort was put into the illustration. The illustration looks professional, and the artist has shown that she can successfully create an illustration with a deeper concept without ruining the theme.

The artist wrote: "As a monk dedicated to spiritual enlightenment, it is important to drop all wordly desires......But kids need their manga! The boy monk loves manga and sits in his temple reading the latest issue of Naruto!" The concept stands out so much, humorous, and simply brilliant!!! Not only he didn't get trapped with the cliche sappy "Romeo-Julio" love story or symbols which the theme unconsciously suggests to every one who first reads it, he also could find a great example of forbidden love in our REAL LIFE, and nothing sappy too! It's an out of the box concept I think. If only this entry had better techniques & efforts shown more than the other 3 entries above have, I'm sure it can place higher in this contest.

Actually, I like to use another judge comment for this entry, but becoz he wrote such a long essay about it, I think I shall use mine instead. This one brings up a non romance subject which is hardly ever found among the almost 100 poem entries that I received. The message is clear, the wording is nice. I love this piece from top to toe...
