One-Act Play: the ResultsA whole month has passed since the
One-Act Play Contest came to its close. In fact
Scriptwriting Month initiated back in June, which feels like a very long time ago, so it is with even more of a pleasure that we can finally announce the results.
Over the last month, `
Nico1, ^
lovetodeviate and I have been reading (and re-reading) the 20 entries submitted to this rather meaty contest. There was a huge array of different themes and approaches to this contest, most of which reflected the process of the entire month. It was definitely a difficult task as there were several scripts which stood out. However these results have been agreed upon between the three of us, and personally I am very happy with them.
Before I announce the winning entries, I wanted to remind everyone of the amazing prize the two deviants in first and second will also receive alongside their placement prizes. The wonderful Film GD team of deviantArt would like to present a unique prize which will see a collaborative effort of the winning work, and the members of the film community.
The top two One-Acts will be the featured scripts in the a dA Film Community Contest. Using these winning scripts, the film community will be invited to turn your One-Act into a short film that realises the creativity and vision behind your words. Better yet, these winners will become one of the judges deciding which film best represents their vision.
So without further ado, here are the final results for the One-Act playwriting contest.
First place

Welcome Home by *
IfrozenspiritI
Here is what the judges had to say about the winning entry:
*IfrozenspiritI's play is captivating, well thought out, and not to say, fresh. I admire how well the play has been structured; the playwright has clearly put in a lot of thought into lighting, sound, space -- the physicality of theatre. And then, the writing itself is haunting. I have a number of interpretations of this play, and my favourite is that its movement/progression mirrors the movement of the writer into his metaphorical writing space.
I have to say that the piece "Welcome Home" truly impressed me. I'm a lover of all things abstract and surreal and this piece was definitely a pleasure to read. Besides it was a real well made script. Playing directions, setting parameters, etc, were 100% defined.
This is a very theatrical piece, with an awareness technical theatre and vocalisations more than physicality. I can definitely see this one could spark a range of creativity in the actual filming because it is mainly the words we rely on. I did enjoy the poetic nature too.

Second place

Names on the Ground by =
psychol-bob
It felt complete, it was well written, well formatted and the characters were distinguished, interesting and it just had something edgy about the story which I think would be really interesting to see filmed. I was sat on the train reading this one, genuinely gripped by the context.
Names on the Ground by =psychol-bob is a quirky take on death. I admired the detail in characterisation and setting, the absurdity of teenagers who like decorating graves for a hobby, and the emotional appeal of the story.

Third place

Acts pt i by ~
Benji-man
The cheekiness of the concept of Acts pt i, which is a pun on the contest challenge (to write a one act play), made me laugh. The play is filled with inaccuracies and anachronisms, but that doesn't deter from its function: to retell the Acts of the Apostles in an educational and entertaining way. Kudos to ~Benji-man!

The Contest Gallery.I would like to thank ^
lovetodeviate and `
Nico1 personally for their time taken reading these pieces and deliberating a difficult but satisfying set of results. Without them I would be running about like a headless chicken trying to decide where to place these wonderful scripts!
There were some sterling efforts made throughout this contest, throughout all of scriptwriting month with people who has never written a script before taking a plunge and trying something new. I want to thank everyone who entered this contest, and the previous mini contests as well as everyone who supported and promoted us throughout.
(I am sure I will have some other project before Christmas!)
Thanks all

'cause there's beauty in the breakdown
If you ask me, the true prize is participating in the scripting month activities. I have mentioned it numerous times, and I still think that it was one of the best experiences I had on dA.

I'll read these over the weekend when I'm not so busy with school, but for now,
