The categories are pretty much determined by how much of a handle you think that you have on the certain technique that you are using. if you are trying something new, then enter the beginner category, if you think you are pretty decent at what you are doing, enter intermediate and if you think you know exactly how to execute what you are doing, enter advanced.
The categories don't really have anything to do with how good a deviation looks. Somebody could have never drawn before but decided to and entered this contest in the beginner section even though they just so happen to be awesome at drawing. Likewise, a traditional artist could decide to enter a photomanipulation, having never done one before, have it come out looking amazing and still enter it in the beginner category since they are a beginner at photomanipulation.
