V&W Lit Event Week 2: Legends

*twilight-apple:icontwilight-apple: reports, September 7, 2008
Week 2: Legends and Myths and Fables

It’s week 2, and we’ve had some great entries come our way for both week 1 and the month-long contest. There are 15 total entries so far, and I imagine there are more on the way.

Week 1 judging results will appear in the week 3 news article.

For a list of vampire entries visit *bekkia’s page, and for a list werewolf entries visit *twilight-apple’s page.

Here are the topics and guidelines for the week 2 contest, and a reminder about the month-long contest.

Week 2: Create Your Own Legend
So much of what we ‘know’ about vampires and werewolves comes from legends, myths, and fables. These tales have circled the globe for decades, perhaps centuries. This is your chance to create your own vampire or werewolf creation legend, or a myth or a fable.

What we want is your version/opinion of how vampires or werewolves were created, if they actually did exist. Or, you can write about someone telling your legend to someone else, like a ghost story by the fire or one of Grandma’s bedtime stories.

For example, look at the disease Porphyria. This disease is caused by a chemical insufficiency in the production of hemoglobin, the iron-containing protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen around the body. Some of you might know how it caused insanity in King George the 3rd of England, or how on an episode of CSI that doctor used dogs to kill people so she could get their hearts and liver and drink them in milkshakes. It has been suggested that the disease is a partial source of information for various vampire and werewolf legends. (look up Porphyria on Wikipedia.org for more information)

Another example is the Native American and First Nations myths and folk stories concerning men with animal spirits, shape-changers, and skin-walkers.

This is your chance to be completely original, so have fun with it. Prose and poetry are welcome, and you are encouraged to write outside of the horror genre if you’re so inclined. Not all legends are frightening, although many can be. Again, limit your stories to no more than 3000 words.

Everyone is welcome to participate, and everyone is limited to 2 submissions each.

Vampire entry judges: *bekkia and *LeonieSainteVire.

Werewolf entry judges: *twilight-apple and ~Dragonsoulj.

Prizes: *LeonieSainteVire will be donating something from the winner’s wish list to the winning vampire entry. *Sefardim will be donating an art request to the winning werewolf entry. The club ~Everything-Werewolf will be featuring the winning werewolf entry in a winner’s journal.

Send a note to either *bekkia or *twilight-apple with a link to your entry and ‘Week 2 Vampire Entry’ or ‘Week 2 Werewolf Entry’ in the title. Make sure you send your note to the correct judge.

:star: The deadline for Week 1 entries is September 13th, 11:50pm Pacific time.

Month-long Contest: Breaking Through the Old Clichés
We only have 2 submissions so far for this contest, 1 vampire and 1 werewolf. I hope a number of you are still writing your entries for this contest, and you can post them from now until the end of the month.

Everyone is welcome to participate, and everyone is limited to 2 submissions each.

Judges: *bekkia and *twilight-apple.

Prizes: *bekkia and *twilight-apple will donate a 3 month sub to the winning vampire entry and the winning werewolf entry. The club ~Everything-Werewolf will be featuring the winning werewolf entry in a journal.

Send a note to both *bekkia and *twilight-apple that includes a link to your entry with ‘Month-Long Vampire Entry’ or ‘Month-Long Werewolf Entry’ in the title.

:star: The deadline for the month-long contest is September 30th, 11:50pm PST.

Keep writing! We love that people are enjoying this lit event.
