Making a comic is not usually a one man/woman operation (except independent comics), mainstream comics are usually done in teams, a writer, a penciler, an inker, a colourist and a letterer. etc. So I thought for a contest we could go through the motions and get some wicked comics done as though we were in a mainstream studio!
This is going to be a
huge contest spanning 4 months, 1 month for each section, and the last step (colourists) are also going to have to be the letters too. This is really cool if you want to have some experience in a certain role, or if you ever wanted to know what it's like to make a comic with someone elses script, or always wanted someone to draw some of your script.
How this will work is we will do the contest in sections, first the
writers. This section will determine whether the rest of the contest can go on, so participation is very important!
Writers will have to create a 1-2 page comic or strip using proper formatting and everything as though you were submitting it to a studio for review.
When the writing deadline is over they will be judged and 3 picked as winners, prizes paid out and we move onto the next section.
The next section is
pencillers, so using one of the winning scripts, you choose one, and pencil those comics pages/strips based on the script. After that month is over, they are judged, prizes paid out and we move to the third section.
Inking, of the winning pencil entries you can pick one and ink it. at the end of that month, winners are announced, prizes paid out and then we move onto the final step.
Colourists! You select one of the winning inks, colour it up, add the script/ balloons and then at the end of that month they are judged and prizes paid out!
At the end, we'll have a look at all final entries again and judge them as a whole and send out MORE prizes for the best team!
Before we get into the details some basic rules and guidelines for all sections:1. must be submitted to the correct gallery (listed in each section)
2. must be your own work
3. must link the contest news article and indicate in the artists description that it is for the "Comic Team Contest"
4. traditional or digital work allowed
5. western/independent comics only, no manga/anime styled work
6. no fanart
7. must conform to DA's TOS and policies
WritersYou have a very important role! People don't think about this but a script can make or break a comic just as easily as the art can! Your goal here is to write an awesome script for a 1-2 page comic or a strip.
Judging will be based on the story and how readable as a script it is.
start date: Sept 12
end date: Oct 12
Rules:1. must be formatted properly as a comic script
2. 2 pages max or 20 panels max
3. no scripts that have already been used. Existing work is okay, as long as noones drawn them before.
