Giving to those who are truly in need

=ImaRawkStar:iconImaRawkStar: reports, December 23
This is the time of year of which we all get tangled up in our own troubles and do not focus on some of the real issues of the world. Well, heifer.org can help us with this, by giving animals to families who are truly in need of food, shelter and security.

By donating a small sum of money, such as ten to twenty dollars, you could provide a family with an animal such as a cow, which could produce milk for the family, for food and cooking. With the extra milk it produces, the family can go to the local market and sell the milk to gain more money, which could go towards food and shelter. Over time, the family will start to gain an income and will be able to earn an education.

With the education, they can receive a steady job and produce a stable income for the family to survive. Just by donating a small sum of money, you could not change one life, but many around them. But this is not just it, the family MUST produce offspring to give to another family, which will do the same thing as the family before. Over time, the community will grow and sooner or later, the impoverished areas will start to gain strength.

Even if you can not donate any money, please donate a few seconds or minutes by adding a favorite to this article and sending it on to other deviants around deviantart. It would be really awesome if we could get some support on this, and maybe as an art community we can pull together to help others in need! I know it can be done!

When did we start hating everything?

When did it suddenly become cool to hate everything? It's a growing problem, especially in the entertainment world, and no one benefits from an increasingly hard to please, pessimistic audience.

SAAM Sexual Assault Awareness Month, April

Rape is not just a crime, it is a heinous and personal invasion on the most intimate of levels. Rape destroys lives and belittles its victims. End the silence, conquer fear, and speak up. We need to raise awareness and help prevent this inhumane crime.

Alkaloids; Friend or Foe?

~jinx-black:iconjinx-black: reports, September 17, 2008
I recently found a bush of Datura Stramonium outside of the dormitory that I live in and took several pictures of the flowers and "Thorn Apples." I went to visit this bush the next day and found that the University had up rooted the entire bush and taken it away. Why had they done this? because Datura Stramonium contains a chemical called Atropine (a Tropane alkaloid) that can cause extreme hallucinations and can easily cause a hellish and painful death.
Knowing just this, most anyone would be willing to have this plant outlawed and destroyed. But wait, Atopine is not the terrible dangerous drug that I have thus far made it out to be. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) has listed Atropine as an "Essential Drug" meaning that it is needed for any basic health system. You see, among a myriad of other medical uses, Atropine can be used to treat bradycardia, pulseless electrical activity, organophosphate poisoning, and hyperhidrosis.
so, Atropine truly is a great drug with many uses in our hospitals. and thanks to our knowledge of the properties of Atropine, it has not been deemed a schedule one drug and outlawed. But is it possible that other drugs with a possible medicinal use HAVE suffered this fate?
The answer is yes. For instance, Lysergic Acid, an ergoline alkaloid. before it was banned by the U.S. Government in 1966, a study was done to review LSD as a treatment for Alcohol abuse. The study found that when subjects with a history of Alcohol abuse were given doses of LSD and given counseling, a large majority of subjects reverted from their Alcohol abuse faster, and more successively than those who received the same counseling without the psychotropic drug. Interesting when to be a schedule one drug, the drug must not have any medicinal use.
And are there other medicinal values for drugs that have simply gotten a bad name? Also yes! Morphine (which is highly addictive) has proven it's self to have an interesting property in at least one case. In a report by PBS on the inner workings of the Adult brain called "The Secret Life of the Brain," one subjects life was changed for the better by morphine. the subject had a severe addiction to cocaine and one day was shot in the lower back. After surgery, the subject was still feeling terrible pain and was given morphine. After a rehabilitation period, the pain eventually left him, though he could no longer walk. However, he realized that soon after having morphine given to him, his cravings for cocaine wained and stopped. Though the chemical reasons for this are not known, it seems that morphine may have the ability to curve and destroy an addiction without leaving its own infamous addiction.
By no means do I support the recreational use of any illegal substance, but I do support perhaps reviewing some of these substances for medical use. Who knows what cures we may have already outlawed?

:iconoverwhelming-power:
The point you are getting at is completely true. We are so determined to cure so many diseases and viruses these days, but we don't fully research the traits of some of the plants. Some of them may carry the cure for cancer, who knows? We must analyze more of the positive facts about today's "Negative" drugs, and unlock what they really hold deep within them. Throwing away harmful substances such as that just because they "hurt" or "harm" us physically or mentally, doesn't mean that we need to just toss them aside like trash, we need to take a deeper look into what some of them really hold. And again, I am with you on this all the way my friend.
