deviantART RSS Feeds - Live and Updated

$chix0r:iconchix0r: reports, September 26, 2008
Our fantastic Devious Technology department recently added and updated the RSS feeds for deviantART. However, before I go any further, you can stop scratching your head in bewilderment and wondering, “What’s RSS?!?” because I’m about to give you the lowdown on all things RSS-related for our community.

FAQ #335: What are RSS feeds and how do I use them?

What’s RSS about?
RSS (Rich Site Syndicate) is a format used to deliver web content that changes regularly. Many news-related sites, weblogs, and other online publishers syndicate their content as a RSS feed to anyone wants it.

Why would I want to use RSS?
RSS is designed for people who regularly use the Internet to gain information. It allows you to stay informed easily by retrieving the latest content directly from the sites you are interested in. This is called subscribing. You can subscribe to your favourite artist’s gallery feed and have it delivered directly to you as soon as they provide an update. Nifty, right?

How do I start using RSS?
First thing you’ll need is something called a news reader. This is a piece of software that checks the feeds and delivers any content directly to you. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable standalone applications.

Browser-based news readers let you catch up with your RSS feed from any computer, whereas downloadable applications let you store them on your main computer in the same way that you either download your email using Outlook, or keep it on a web-based service like Gmail.

What reader should I use?
Here are a couple of recommendations:
:bulletblack: Google Reader is an excellent browser based RSS reader.
:bulletblack: FeedReader is a free downloadable reader.

Once you have selected a reader all you need to do is click the orange RSS icon () located in the address bar of pages which have this feature available, or simply point the RSS reader to the URL.

Here are some example deviantART feeds which you may wish to try out:

Have fun!

I am not very familiar with RSS feeds, so thanx for the explanation. Isnt our message center just a large RSS feed in itself?
