How to Commission an Artist

*ArynChris:iconArynChris: reports, November 16
A comprehensive guide to commissioning, based on my personal experiences and observations. This guide does not address hosting contests, nor does it specifically address the unique challenges of commissioning through specific websites, though some typical scenarios are mentioned in passing. Topics include choosing the artist, why it's important to make sure you can afford it, how to contact the artist, payment, what WIPs are and why you might want to see them, and legal rights of both parties. Legal rights are discussed at the beginner level and are NOT in depth here.

The Difference Between Anime Edits And "Vectors"

~stop-tracing:iconstop-tracing: reports, September 29, 2008
BIG FAT DISCLAIMER: ~stop-tracing supports and appreciates real vector art. I am NOT dissing every vector artist ever. This article is about vector "artists" who take other people's art, trace over it, and call it their own. Those of you that create lovely vector art from your own mind or use resources and references that you have the legal right to use are in the clear, okay? Keep on artin'. :D

This is gonna be a shorter one, folks, but I've been thinking about this for a while.

deviantART prohibits the submission of screenshot "edits". For those of you that have never encountered a screenshot edit- let me give you a very typical example.

Big note: The vast majority of this sort of "vector art" is anime-related, and that's what I'm most familiar with, so that's the example I'll be using. I'm sure this happens to American cartoons and maybe even live-action shows.

Say someone is a fan of the anime Naruto, and they like to RP or write fanfiction or something. That's fine, right, everyone's entitled to their fandom tastes, and there's nothing wrong with that. There's also nothing wrong with wanting to have pictures of your original character(s). But the people with OCs who "can't draw" often use screenshot edits to create pictures of their character. There are two ways to do this...

Trace-Over Method:

The "artist" takes a screenshot with a character in it that looks close to what they want their character to look like. Then, in a digital art program, they paint over the character in the screenshot and transform it into "their" character. They may change things like the face, hair, and clothes. It's rarely hard to figure out which canon character the "original" character was based on, and the painted-over character often doesn't blend in well with the rest of the screenshot.

Here's a screenshot of Sakura from Naruto, traced over in Photoshop: [link]
Original: [link]
Animated layover with the original (warning, the file is XBOX HUGE): [link]

Bonus game: How many times did the word "character" appear in this paragraph? Answer for a prize! :slow:

Recolor Method:

Some editors don't even bother to draw anything and instead, simply digitally recolor the canon characters and name them something else. This can be done by actually painting over, or selecting areas of the picture and playing with the hue. For instance, someone may take Sailor Moon, make her hair brown and all of her clothes different shades of green, and call her Sailor Earth.

Here's the same screenshot of Sakura from Naruto, simply recolored this time rather than drawn over: [link]
Animated layover with the original (once again XBOX HUGE): [link]

Most screenshot editors don't bother to paint over everything- just the character(s) of their choice. Recolors especially are rarely covered up all the way. deviantART deletes screenshot edits because they contain pieces of the original, which is a copyright violation.

So, now that we've got that out of the way, let's move on to vectors. Specifically, screenshot vectors.

They're done by taking a screenshot, opening it in a vector program (Illustrator for example) and tracing precisely over the lines. Colors may or may not be changed. Usually vectors are little more than a fancy makeover- "shinier" than the screenshots they are "based" on. Some of them may be changed into "original" characters, but it's more common for them to just be "fan art". While the background in edits and trace-overs is usually left intact, the backgrounds for screenshot vectors are usually (but not always) changed.

Here is a screenshot vector of Mori from Ouran High School Host Club. Notice how little changes between the two images. The background is what changes the most, but the two images are near identical. However, the deviantART staff would not remove this.

So I ask you now, deviantART:

What's the difference?

Honestly, what is the difference between screenshot edits and screenshot vectors? Why is one method not allowed because it's "copyright violation," while the other method is allowed to grow and flourish here like a weed?

Neither method has the artist starting with a blank slate. Both methods take someone else's art as their base. Anime vector "artists" just tend to cover up the original better.

Vecotring is just another method of painting over. Sure, it's more complete, and the results are, 90% of the time, much more attractive.

But does that make it okay?

Why does that make it okay?

I was very disappointed in the admins when that report came back "invalid." That was one of the first tracing reports I'd seen rejected and it kind of inspired me to start speaking up.

And doing the recolor/trace-overs of Sakura made me feel dirty. :o

WHAAT? Invalid! Jeez, what do we even have an admin for? First off, they don't take off explicit works when they say they will (I tested that one myself. They still haven't sent me anything.) and now they're letting the site get filled up with half-ass traces? NO, is what I say!

As for re-coloring... Sakura and poor Hinata seem to be big victims of that... check these crap-sterpieces out.

I don't know anymore. :noes: I still report the art theft that I know they will delete, because it drives me nuts to just let it sit. But I feel like I'm consorting with the enemy or something  they are just as much a part of the problem since they've stopped deleting this stuff. I hope they shape up soon or else we're going to have a much bigger problem on our hands... the sooner they start, the less they'll have to delete.

And yeah, you don't have to look far to find recolors. I mean heck, just sit there and refresh the front page for a few minutes and chances are, you'll see one float by. :dead:

What's really ticking me off right now are people that get accounts here on dA, but they don't post any of their own art. They post stuff they find out on photobucket, and then they say in their author comments "all credit goes to original artist". Um, WHO ARE THEY?? And now they've got everyone confused because these things are floating around and nobody knows who the hell drew them in the first place. AND NO ONE REPORTS THEM!

No, you don't... *nods sadly* Whenever I look up pairings, especially (let's use NaruHina) I see a picure, I zoom in, and I say, "Hmm, there's Naruto... and there's a girl... she kinda looks like Hinata... she has the same facial-shape... but her hair is green? lol wut? Why is this under NaruHina? And who's Kitsunakikahomi?"

:iconstop-tracing:
That really pisses me off too. :| It's ridiculous to say you gave proper credit when you don't even know who the original artist is. It's really childish and disrespectful to post someone else's art without their permission... and then if you mention the rules to them, they throw this huge hissy fit about it. OMG WHO CARES I JUST LIKE THE PICTURE!!!!!!!1111111

Thankfully, TinEye is good for tracking down originals. =P

I usually just go, "Oh, looks like Sakura died her hair blue, lolz" when I see those. It's usually sooooo obvious which canon character got traced.

Adding this to my favorites. Also, I have reported two images by the same person. She has traced over another deviants art into her own, and gives "credit". She also supplies a link to the original. Though, I highly doubt she actually got permission. If you'd like a link, I can supply one in a note. But...I don't get it. :/ I haven't got any response back. Does crediting make them home free or something?

:iconminion-of-misery2:
Yeah... that's happened to me already... -_-' They just don't get that it makes them look really bad. It's like, if I saw my crap being re-posted by someone else (ha! as if) I would hit the roof, for sure.

TinEye? What's that?

So painfully obvious... thankfully I don't ever look up Sakura related things, so I don't get much of that... but the other stuff... the stupid gives me brain tumors...

Oh yeah! I found someone out here on dA who does the whole vector tracing thing, but... they're so popular... -_-' I'm afraid to report them, because they even have a fanclub... what do you do about people like that?
