World Mental Health Day

`Flutterings:iconFlutterings: reports, October 11, 2008
Today (October 10th) is World Mental Health Day.

~alcheme posted an amazing article about this here, this is merely a follow up article to feature all of the volunteered works, and share the facts again.

Fight the stigma - Speak your mind.

SOME QUOTES

"People that suffer from mental illness are real people. They are doctors, they are lawyers, they are therapists, they are engineers, they are artists, and they are all around you..." - ~alcheme

There is a stigma surrounding mental illness that needs to be addressed. This stigma ensures that people that could be getting help, either supportively or medically, do not. - *Flutterings

"Twenty years ago cancer was the 'c-word' - nobody talked about cancer," Malmon said. "That's where we are right now. One in four adults is diagnosed with some form of mental illness ... but we're not discussing it, we're not facing it."

"The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four Americans is suffering from some form of mental illness. Think of your three best friends. If they're okay, then it's you." Rita Mae Brown

INFORMATION

Mental illnesses are medical conditions that disrupt a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others, and daily functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are medical conditions that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.

Serious mental illnesses include major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and borderline personality disorder. The good news about mental illness is that recovery is possible.

Mental illnesses can affect persons of any age, race, religion, or income. Mental illnesses are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character, or poor upbringing. Mental illnesses are biologically based brain disorders. They cannot be overcome through "will power" and are not related to a person's "character" or intelligence.

STATISTICS

An estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older (about one in four adults) suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. This figure translates to 57.7 million people in America alone..

Between 5 and 10 per cent of the UK population are suffering from depression, in some form, to some extent, at any one time.

Over a lifetime you have a 20 per cent, or one in five, chance of having an episode of depression.

:bulletblue: Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety Disorders are the most common mental illness*in the U.S. affecting 40 million (18.1%) of the adult U.S. population in a year.

Anxiety disorders frequently co-occur with depressive disorders or substance abuse. Most people with one anxiety disorder also have another anxiety disorder.

Types of disorders:
:bulletred: Generalized Anxiety Disorder: 6.8 million, 3.1%.
:bulletred: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: 2.2 million, 1.0%.
:bulletred: Panic Disorder: 6 million, 2.7%.
:bulletred: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: 7.7 million, 3.5%.
:bulletred: Social Anxiety Disorder: 15 million, 6.8%.
:bulletred: Specific Phobia affects: 19 million, 8.7%.
:bulletred: Any Phobia (Social Anxiety Disorder, Specific Phobia, Agoraphobia) affects 36 million (16.3%) of adult Americans.

:bulletblue: Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder affects approximately 5.7 million American adults, or about 2.6 percent of the U.S. Population age 18 and older in a given year.

Bipolar disorder is commonly misdiagnosed. The average patient receives 3.5 misdiagnoses and consults four physicians before obtaining an accurate diagnosis.

:bulletblue: Bipolar disorder and suicide:
:bulletred: Approximately 1 in 5 people with bipolar disorder eventually commit suicide, a rate 30 times higher than the general population.
:bulletred: 20-50% of people with bipolar disorder attempt suicide at least once.

:bulletblue: Depression
:bulletred: More Americans suffer from depression than coronary heart disease (7 million), cancer (6 million) and AIDS (200,000) combined.
:bulletred: Major depressive disorder affects approximately 14.8 million American adults, or about 6.7 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year.
:bulletred: Major Depressive Disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15-44.
:bulletred: Depression is the cause of over two-thirds of the 30,000 reported suicides in the U.S. each year.

:bulletblue: Suicide
More than 90 percent of people who kill themselves have a diagnosable mental disorder, commonly a depressive disorder or a substance-abuse disorder.

There are extremely high rates of self injury, with as many as 1 in 100 young women being admitted to hospital at least once with self inflicted, deliberate, injuries.

For women, it is the most common cause of acute medical admission, while for men it’s second only to heart disease.

The seriousness of self-harm should not be underestimated. One to two per cent of people who deliberately self-harm go on to take their own life within two years.

:bulletred: Every 18 minutes in the United States, someone dies by suicide.
:bulletred: Suicide is the eighth leading cause of death for all U.S. men.
:bulletred: Males are four times more likely to die from suicide than females.
:bulletred: Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people ages 15 to 24 (second leading in some western states.)

One in six people who take their own life leave a note.

Overall, 15 per cent of people with depression, schizophrenia or alcohol problems will commit suicide.

Suicidal ideas are expressed by 68 per cent of people before they act.

I am thankful for my three heart sisters who love me even from afar, my three heart brothers who support me through it all, my heart cousin Kho who understands me more than I do most of the time, my mom, dad and brother who finally accept my illness and support me all the way in my decisions, and my baby, who holds me through it all and made me realize that no matter what we do, we still come back together.

I really would like to thank my therapist of one year. She really pulled me through my last year of high school and saved me from a relapse into self-injury. The physical scars and the periodic situational depression and intense desire to hurt myself are still there, but she gave me the tools to deal with them, and I will always be grateful to her for it. So thank you, Karan.

Inescapably me | Imprisoned | Invisible | Muse of Madness and Wasting Away by ~alcheme
Some days I have my up days. Some days I have my down days. Sometimes I do not contact my family for months at a time. But, through all of this and so much more, there has been one person that has taken my dysfunctions, my episodes, my moods, my side-effects from my medications, and some many other things that she should not have to, in stride. She has supported me, and helped me come to terms with my diagnoses. My mother is not only a great mother, a great person, but also my greatest supporter and greatest friend. Thank you!

I originally wrote (Invisible) for my friend Erin. She has had her ups and downs. She has hit the bottom of the barrel (not merely the gutter, but sunk to the bottom of the sewers below), and she has fought like no other person I have known to reclaim her life and to proudly be able claim to not just be a person that suffers from mental illness, not merely be a person who has survived the darkness, but a true survivor in ever possible meaning of the word. She has helped me through her stories of survival, through my questions unknown, and through being a true friend that understands the pain I know. Thank you, Erin! You are one of the greatest people I have ever met... :)

Thank you so much for the article. Mental illnesses have affected both me and my mother, though I don't have all of the ones she has... Asperger's syndrome, OCD, major clinical depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD. It's reassuring to see others affected in similar ways.

If you expect the unexpected, and the unexpected becomes the expected, then you can no longer expect the unexpected because there is no more unexpected to expect, and then you are not expecting the unexpected, so the whole thing is pointless.
