Let me, please, describe myself a little first, top to bottom, so you can see where I am coming from:
I have longer hair, bangs that cover my right eye. I wear black eyeliner, sometimes purple, and black eyeshadow outside of school. My shirts are usually black with that splash of color known to stores like Hot Topic. I wear nail polish, and it's usually dark purple (I don't own black. Soon...). I do wear skinny jeans, and my favorite belt is white with purple studs (
here's the exact one). I wear what Vans describes as a "
slip-on", for lack of a better term. Some of my favorite accessories include large belts around my middle and a huge bow I clip into my hair. I love Fall Out Boy, Linkin Park, and other punk-rock types of things. I love my iPod.
Can you picture me? What's the first stereotype that comes to your mind? Don't be afraid, we all use them; it's built into us. Is it "oh, she's emo and slits her wrists in the bathroom"? Or "oh, so scene"?
Actually... how could you know?
I have recently come across the stereotype of "scene" Paraphrasing the writers on Urban Dictionary, scene means I like guns, dinosaurs, 80's music, and I have a rocking myspace. Sorry, I'm not the gun type, cute dinosaurs on shirts are not in my closet, and I don't have a myspace (or, I do, but I haven't signed on in a year. Consider it nonexistent.). But, kudos to the 80's music. Great time. For the full article on Urban Dictionary about "scene", click
here.
Okay, emo, the whole reason I wanted write this article! Urban Dictionary claims emo means, "An entire subculture of people (usually angsty teens) with a fake personality." (full article, click
here).
That as an introduction, let us delve into "emo". The word used to mean a style of punk/rock music; it has transformed into meaning a fake, self-absorbed teen that cries all the time, writes horrible poetry, and loves the color black.
Now, does "emo", to you, describe the fashion of tight jeans, graphic tees, and the "slip-on" shoe? Or is it how one acts, as in "sitting in a dark corner" or "quiet and sullen".
In my point of view, I argue for the fashion. I wear those things because that style is just unlike any other. I don't want to wear mini-skirts or sweater vests, sweatshirts and sweatpants every day. And I don't want to have no style at all. Plus, if you were to say I were emo, to most people it means the attitude. I am not depressed. I am quite happy, smile, usually, uncontrollably, and love to laugh.
And, think about it. If you were to argue for the disposition, wouldn't you just be describing "depression"? Seriously, get a psych.
So, am I, in fact, emo? By looking at who I am, would you still say that I am "emo" or "scene"? Go on, keep using these terms, that doesn't bother me. But, I think if we take this notion and add it to our way of thinking, people who you'd never have known because of what they look like on the outside might be just like you on the inside.

Devious Comments
We humans tend to stereotype people for the following reasons:
1.- Easier to recognize others
2.- Gather with the type of people we might feel comfortable
3.- Cuz its in our blood
For instance, when you walk along your daily walk (lul, it might be, I dunno, a visit to the supermarket, or to school), we look other people around us, but never observe them. We tend to look advertisements and we mainly see a product that is being sold by some big brand. We tend to only look the green areas, the animals, the insects, but they never amaze us, why? Because we are used to it and. And so does stereotypes work.
Because since we were children, everything seemed to amaze us, the big fat woman (why is she so fat!?), the cool red cat (did someone colored that cat?), the increadible blue sky (why is it over us?), and well, curiosity ends sometime, and now its all common sense to us.
So stereotyping has been a way of life like, from since we arrived to this planet, its not bad, but its not good either. This common "tradition" of clasifying things and people, have costs us wars, and years of discrimination. It could nice if there were no stereotypes in the world and if rivers were made of chocolate syrup.
But they aren´t made of chocolate syrup!! (DUN DUN DUUUUUN)
Oh terrible reality!
Anyways, back to the main point, yes, people might call you emo, punk, goth or even worst... ordinary! But that doesn´t changes who you are, eventually, a new trend will come up, and everyone will go like "OMG, WTH, WEIRD", why? because for us humans, its natural to be afraid or untrusty to new or out of the regular daily things that might come out any second.
So after this blabbering, that I hope, someone understood it, I´m gonna tell you what emo means to me (as my personal stereotype, since everyone has a different describing for others).
For me, a person being emo means, that he/she is currently attracted to new things, to wear or use different things that others might not use them that way normally. It´s a new trend, that talks about feelings and emotions.
But hey! I like to use stuff that others don´t use normally in other ways and I always try to use my emotions and feelings!
That´s the point, stereotypes aren´t always just one definition, like theres no always one boy who has black long hair that uses tight pants, they might be a blonde girl with short haircut wearing tight pants.
You don´t have to worry about things like stereotypes, or being watched by old men or whatever, you know why? cause you are no ordinar person, and being ordinary, is the worst you could be.

She ended up being one of my best friends.
stereotypes are stupid and recks your view on someone or a group of people, when they can be the total opposite.
When I'm joking around, or when friends are, we refer to emo as "someone who loves pain", but its really just the music and the clothes, which I think are pretty cool xD
The stereotype just grew and grew and turned nito some fag tag.
This is the first time I've known what scene means, and no one ever uses that term that I know; so I can't say much about that;;
You shouldn't be labeled because of what you wear, I think you're a great, happy, and caring person!
People used to stereotype me as emo 'cause I wore black lots(I evehad a talk with the principal because the stereotypes went too far and people seriously thought I cut myself). But I was one of the happiest in my class.
So, basically, stereotyping's stupid.

I'm depressed often, but I don't cut or put on a different face for the general public.
Actually, never mind, I do. I pretend to be normal.
