Show Them You Love Them Contest - UPDATES

*Ruffian2001:iconRuffian2001: reports, December 14
The "Show Them You Love Them contest" is to benefit and raise awareness for the abused and unwanted animals you find in shelters worldwide. We are trying to help show the DA community the love that we pet owners have for our animals, and the pain and desolation of those lonely few who roam the streets without love and affection. This contest is open to everyone, whether you have an animal or not, and has two divisions: Amateur and Professional. Though it is photography (petography to be more specific) only! The Grand Prize is a 3 year subscription, monetary donations to humane societies within North America, a free print, 3 news articles and nearly 40 journal features!

This contest has received a fantastic amount of acclaim and has been sponsored by multiple clubs within the DA community! Please love this article if you support this contest and help spread the word by advertising in your journal! Even if you only get 3 or 4 page views per day, it can still make a difference in this contest!

Comics Team Contest - Pencils Section

`misskittyoooo:iconmisskittyoooo: reports, October 18, 2008
:star: Please read carefully before entering!
Winners for script section announced at the bottom!

If you have any questions please direct them to ^misskittyoooo via note rather than commenting on the news article.

Introduction
Making a comic is not usually a one man/woman operation (except independent comics), mainstream comics are usually done in teams, a writer, a penciler, an inker, a colourist and a letterer. etc. So I thought for a contest we could go through the motions and get some wicked comics done as though we were in a mainstream studio!

This is going to be a huge contest spanning 4 months, 1 month for each section, and the last step (colourists) are also going to have to be the letters too. This is really cool if you want to have some experience in a certain role, or if you ever wanted to know what it's like to make a comic with someone elses script, or always wanted someone to draw some of your script.

How this will work is we will do the contest in sections, first the writers. This section will determine whether the rest of the contest can go on, so participation is very important!
Writers will have to create a 1-2 page comic or strip using proper formatting and everything as though you were submitting it to a studio for review.
When the writing deadline is over they will be judged and 3 picked as winners, prizes paid out and we move onto the next section.
The next section is pencillers, so using one of the winning scripts, you choose one, and pencil those comics pages/strips based on the script. After that month is over, they are judged, prizes paid out and we move to the third section.
Inking, of the winning pencil entries you can pick one and ink it. at the end of that month, winners are announced, prizes paid out and then we move onto the final step.
Colourists! You select one of the winning inks, colour it up, add the script/ balloons and then at the end of that month they are judged and prizes paid out!
At the end, we'll have a look at all final entries again and judge them as a whole and send out MORE prizes for the best team!

Before we get into the details some basic rules and guidelines for all sections:
1. must be submitted to the correct gallery (listed in each section)
2. must be your own work
3. must link the contest news article and indicate in the artists description that it is for the "Comic Team Contest"
4. traditional or digital work allowed
5. western/independent comics only, no manga/anime styled work
6. no fanart
7. must conform to DA's TOS and policies

Pencillers

Your job is to visually represent the winning scripts (listed below), your pencils will be inked by the next set of people so you should make sure it is legible and clean. You'll be setting the pace for how the comic looks. Judging will be based on the art itself, panelling, whether you've left enough room for dialogue and all those fancy bits!

For examples please browse through Comics and cartoons> traditional> comics> pages for inspiration.
I do not want to provide specific examples, as I am not looking for any one style or type of pages. Independent, marvel, or any kind of original comics art is all acceptable. I would rather you use your own style than attempt to mimic examples thinking it's your best chance of winning. The point of this contest is fun, and to work in a team. So have fun with it and don't over think it.

start date: Oct 19
end date: Nov 19

Rules:
1. must be your own work
2. must be pencil (or have the appearance of pencil work if done in digital. ie. grey not black bold lines)
3. link the script and credit the script in the artists comments
4. only use one of the winning scripts from the first part of the contest

Submit to:
community projects> contest> 2008> comicteam> pencillers
Judges: ^misskittyoooo, `Cedarseed & $y2jenn

Prizes:
First: 50 devdollars + fella plushie
Second: 25 devdollars + fella plushie
third: 15 devdollars + fella plushie

Winning Scripts

These are the available scripts for pencillers to use. You may do one, or all of them, however you can only win once in this section.

What does "no anime/manga style" refer to exactly? Just big eyes and crazy hair? There are so many different Japanese comic series with many different looks, and in the meantime, American comic artists take some Japanese influences as well...

I'm more of a sequential artist than a visual artist. Can I enter if I use superhero or cartoony character designs but utilize manga-influenced paneling, composition, and visual flow?

oAo;;; good question. I was too not confident in my not manga drawing abilities and decided not to try it in art. >< I think it would be fantastic to see you do a different style though! O_O I've only ever seen your manga.

Haha, yeah, I'm not too big on not-manga either, but I figured it would be a good exercise. If I do decide to try my hand at it, I would only do yours, though <3 BUT DANG SO MUCH DESCRIPTION SO MANY DETAILS XD

Does we have any indications or restriction about the page size, bleed, frame and things like that?
I mean, it should be a A4 or it could be long or large... like a webcomic?
