The theme is: Colours with a meaning

► Did you knew that you can create a certain mood depending on which colours you use?

Here are a few examples :

WHITE: generally associated with good suggestion, is the symbol of purity, hope, peace, empty and humility for many cultures of the west, maybe because of the influence of the Church in the representations of the divine. In eastern cultures it can also be the symbol of death. The deep differences in this colour are due to the various interpretations: for example it can be linked with death because of the colour of skeletons, the pale skin of a death person; or it can be linked with holyness and purity because of its resemblance with daylight. –

GREY: is a very cold and sad colour, it is the symbol of boredom, old age, stability, but also elegance and respect.

BLACK: is a very mysterious colour, it is the symbol of death and evil in western cultures, but today it has acquired a meaning of elegance, sophistication, formality, rebellion and power.

RED: In the sphere of the holy it represents the martyrs, and the Roman Catholic Church. Maybe because of its electric tone, it is also linked with blood and war or love, energy, passion and strength.

BLUE: it is a cold colour, associated generally with peace, harmony, tranquillity, conservatism but also with depression, coldness, sadness. In many religious believes it is associated with salvation. - GREEN: cold colour. It is linked with nature, fertility, wealth, money, fortune, calm and intelligence. In the Middle Ages, green was used to symbolize the devil.

YELLOW: warm colour, it is the symbol of joy, happiness optimism, summer, but also avarice. In the Middle Ages it was linked with the devil. –

PURPLE: cold colour. It is linked with creativity, mystery, sensuality, confusion, wisdom, and nobility. In Thailand, it is the colour of mourning for widows.

ORANGE: warm colour. It is linked with happiness energy, enthusiasm, balance, desire, playfulness and gaudiness. It is also the colour elected by Hinduism and Buddhism. - BROWN: warm colour. Associated with boldness, nature, richness, earth, rustic elements, traditions, poverty, roughness, dullness and simplicity.

PINK: cold colour, which is generally associated with femininity, love, admiration and spring.

Today's colours are used in medicine and psychology: for example cold colours like blue and green are calming, whereas warm colours like red or orange are more exciting.


What you need to do, is to make a piece with 1 main colour. The main colour must fit with the mood of your piece. For example if you're making a piece about death, the main colour should be black and not orange. Can you use more colours? Yes, but the main colour (1 colour) must be clear, which you use often, more than the rest of the colours in your piece and gives the mood of your piece.

The piece could be a vector, text art, photography... whatever you want!
