About themes in art , flame-wars and Rip-offs

=IceKrystal:iconIceKrystal: reports, November 1, 2008
Alright. It’s the first time I am doing something like this, but I felt the need for it.

Well, after my last Daily Deviation, I got flamed by random people, that really can turn a DD into something unwanted. But don’t get me wrong, I really love getting a DD. I feel so honoured especially if I get it for a picture I worked on hours and hours. But after getting flamed I really started to think if it is worth it.

Now I am a person who takes critique rather hard. You won’t notice it on the net, but after getting some hard and often inappropriate critique I usually walk trough the house for hours and think about this comment and why did I get it.

But I work on myself and try to appreciate every bit of critique to get better.

But what I don’t like is to be randomly insulted by random people.

So all critiques aside, I switch to the main subject of this article.

THEMES IN ART

Well, if you ever browsed through dA and watch tv on a daily basis you will easily recognize similarities between many DD and popular tv shows (mostly animes, but also games).
Many artist draw fanart of animes and games and put that in said category, the Fanart category. Also they normally state that in their artists descriptions. (And I cannot say it often enough, READ THE ARTIST'S DESCRIPTIONS).

But, although you can easily recognize characters and themes from tv shows, animes and games through certain aspects, you will still come across images that may be fanart but actually have nothing to do with any kind of tv show, anime or game.

Yes, I refer to my newest DD . People all over the world told me that it looks really similar to a certain game. And yes, now I see the resemblance. But that does not mean, I copied it from there. I got a different source of inspiration, and everyone who actually read the artist’s despriction will know that.

But you know what? Before someone told me yesterday I never heard of the game. Really.

And lets face the fact: A gun in an anime or game is NOT creative.
A red coat already appeard in another anime (I actually know of). So it’s not something creative either.
A white wolf is besides a black wolf the most popular colored wolf.
Monsters appear in nearly every goddamn game.

Now, what? Just because I drew a white wolf with a red coat, guns and monsters I am a shameless rip-off? Listen to yourself. It’s really ridiculous.
Do I have to pay what-company-so-ever a license fee when I buy and wear a red coat now just because in that game people seem to have seen a red coat for the first time?

Let me tell you something:
-Not every artist is a game-freak or anime-freak.
-Not every artist is a rip-off.
-And, most important, coincidences happen.

And now I will blame and flame at everyone who draws realistic because they are all rip-offs of nature.

You see, how ridiculous that is?

So, I think I made my point clear.

PS: This is not a flame against Fanart. I like fanart and love to draw it myself.

I could only shake my head over and over again, while browsing through that deviation's comments. I can't believe some people turned your innocent deviation into a battleground.

That character has been compared to the protagonists of Hellsing, DMC and Constantine. I suggest the flamers don't forget, while they're at it, to sue the creators of ALL of them, for ripping off from each other, because "clearly" your character carries traits of all of them *rolleyes*.

To be honest, and please don't be offended, that character isn't the "most creative". It is plain white, wears a red coat, and uses guns. I don't wanna know how many characters are floating around, anthro or not, who have white hair and/or wear red coats. Your character doesn't have any "would recognize him immediately"-details. Red coats are common. White hair is common. Guns... hell, how many artists draw their chars with guns?

And... How many famous TV-, anime or comic characters have white hair? Wear red coats or long coats in general? Use guns?

Possible conclusions: The creators of such characters ripped off the >total original< idea of longs coats, guns and white hair from each other and should totally be sued because of it (not to forget you, who totally followed in their footsteps) or these things are simply not as original as people claim.

I'll be careful to never buy a red cloak now, in fear I could be considered a living rip-off. Or wait, how many characters wear BLACK coats? I'm doomed.

I wish you the strenght to survive the curse called "DD", although it should be a pleasant thing and not end in something like... this.

Agreed.
I think I know the game you're talking about. But why flaming? I don't get their point. :/
I mean, there are so many animes/ games where the main character has a red coat! e.g.: Hellsing, Trigun, Devil May Cry, Carmen Sandiego (lol :XD:), Final Fantasy VII and many more.
As you said one can find similarities in any art.
I think those people are just jelaous. :/ Just ignore them.

:iconthunderfox5:
Well... I don't think you're a rip off of anything. Actually I think you're one of the most original artists around. The DD was well deserved.

Even if that was a rip-off (which I'm pretty sure it isn't) there are DDs for the fan art gallery too. People these days... :|

...and if it moves... kill it.
:icononni-hitsok:
I will admit I am a gamer, and i have seen and played many games, animes, ect.
And what i see in peoples art is what they put there, I have never called anything a Rip-off, Because I don't think anything is a Rip-Off.
Like others have said, Games, TV, Movies, Anime, Ect. All follow common looks, I Mean Just Look At The Time Period They Are Made In, They follow what is popular. And if that is a White Haired Red Long Coat Wearing Gunslinger, than that is what they will make, It is what is Popular. But not everyone will make what is popular at that time, they may make it because they want to make it.

This is to all those who give Flamer comments or any like them - STFU and look around and realize its all the same, People using there imagination and creating what they want.

The particular image that is being talked about is a great image, And NOT a Rip-Off because it is Different than any i have Seen, In Games, Anime, or what ever else is out there.

So just keep those Flamer comments to yourself, People will do what they want, when they want.... Just Deal With It.

I am a gamer,and I watch alot of anime,but even so,that doesn't mean just becouse something looks like it that it's a rip off. I've had comments like that,not on DA though. It is rediculouse though. I am very sensitive ith critics,some can be so rude! But your art is great! As you said,just becouse it has simalarities doesn't mean it's a rip off! Just ignore them,and......sorry for all the mispelled words and typos in this comment. ^^;

You got what..? o.O
Ouch, that hurts.. and I can understand that you're pretty upset and sad about that.
Personally I don't care that a character of a computer game (a game which I don't even know) wears a red coat, too.
(Hell, my girlfriend wears a red coat.. is she a rip-off too? ;) )
Red coats and a gun are not excusivly.
I mean look at all the recolored Simbas and Scars out there o.O;;

So please.. do not let this disencourage you. I love your art and I hope to see more of you in the future.

carry on...
