Winamp3 is actually good.

`monaux:iconmonaux: reports, November 28, 2001
Everyone here at deviantART seems to have the preconception that Winamp3 will be / is a bad piece of software. This is far from the truth. So far from the truth, in fact, that the truth is situated at least three provinces away from it.

Initially, with the release of the first Winamp3 Beta, I was nonplussed. However, after discussing it with Kinwashi, I began to realize the sheer magnitude of this brilliant nugget of coding mastery.

For starters, all of you who are concerned about Winamp3 not supporting 2x skins: you will certainly find it interesting that Winamp3 final will definitely be able to support skins from 2x. It would have been very short-sighted of Nullsoft to not include this feature, as there are still a giant number of Winamp 2x skin aficionados in the skinning “community”.

For those of you who are concerned about the creation of silly/bad freeform skins: please realize that Winamp3 scripting is difficult. So difficult, in fact, that Fyreman, Kinwashi and myself have all obtained scripting assistance from the delightful Mr. Luc Lamothe. We do the art, he does the code. This level of scripting difficulty will greatly diminish the quantity of bad skins.

Also, what percentage of current Winamp skins would you consider “good”? What percentage would you actually use? I personally have 73 skins in my collection. There are 1000s upon 1000s of skins at Winamp.com, so I estimate that the percentage of “good” skins would be significantly less that 1%.

For those of you who are concerned about the lack of anti-aliasing: Winamp3 Beta 2 already supports anti-aliasing on 2000 and XP. Apparently, Nullsoft are planning on having the final version support all versions of Windows.

The sheer quantity of excellent, useful skinning features that Nullsoft has slated to be in the final version is just mind-blowing. You are basically able to create absolutely anything you can imagine. There are very few limitations.

After stating these facts, I cannot fathom any reason to not like Winamp3. The final version will definitely be considered a nonpareil piece of audio software.

Don’t be a luddite. Use Winamp3.

Actually you can use 2x skins in Winamp3 right now, theyre just not full usable.

Ive been using winamp3 since alpha2 and use it 98% of the time i play music.
It runs great and theres some great skins coming for it.
I think its good that not everyone and his dog can create a skin for it.

The skins will stay at a higher quality level.
So if youve skinned winamp2 some of you should start skinning winamp3.

by the way your skins looking cool monaux.

As of beta2 (came out today) skins can have drop shadows and stuff, but no (publicly available) skins support it yet.
Kinwashis update should be out soon and im sure others will add it.

but will the program itself be as stable? skinning doesn't seem like it'll be an issue, if it supports the 2.x skins, but winamp2 never crashes... will winamp3 be equally as stable? not sure yet...

I think it's going to be one heck of an MP3 player, and judging from the promo skin you put up monaux, exciting designs are within reach.

Monaux wouldn't post the link here, but that doesn't mean I won't. ;) (Wink)

the guys at winamp are pros at it - that goes without saying - its the only freeware application next to style builder that gets upadted so frequently - the developing team probably slogs whole year just making their player more stable ,customisable and add new features - i dont see why the issue of stability and how good winamp 3 will be - isnt winamp 2 the resume of the nullsoft - one look at it will sure convince you how neat and essential it is - ive used the beta versions of 3 they are good and developing - lets giv the guys at nullsoft a chance - they have proven themselves bfore - i dont see why not this time:->

Heres another sweet skin coming for winamp3:

watchitman,
you can delete any features you dont want. You can delete the following items:
Media Library
Playlist Editor
AVS
Old AVS Loader
Script Loader
Skin Switcher
Database Explorer
Shoutcast Server
Gamma controls
Configuration

so if you dont use them just delete them.

Nullsoft guys are addicted to killing bloat, Justin spends his whole day just removing a couple kilobytes from NSIS.
