Faves and comments

~elmagonia:iconelmagonia: reports, November 21
Personally, I appreciate them both.
But to be quite honest, faves are more important
(to an artist or writer themselve)

Hm, why is that?
Comments, yeah.
Everyone wants them.
ALL the time. No matter what. I've had a few times where I made nagging journals, constantly asking and begging people to comment my work no matter what. I didn't care if they had the time or not. I didn't care if they had a life or not.
I.
didn't.
care.

So, since I've seen (a few, actually a lot of) people get a bit overwhelmed only because some deviation that they worked on for hours on end doesn't get the needed amount of comments. But it has about over 30 or 40 faves. So what? I'd be honored to have one of my own deviations with that many faves. Wanna know why?

Because if half of you haven't realized by now, faves CAN get you noticed. Basically, it's like a dieses or a chain letter. It spreads.
One deviant faves it, others see it and they fave it as well. Possibly a few might even comment it. But that depends on who they are in general. I've had a few of my deviations faved by people I haven't even heard of, and still I get them all the time.

Unlike comments, they just give you more and more views. Nothing really special. Sure, you might get a few "oh that's awesome" or "that is so frappin' unique!" or whatever.

Well what if I wanted both comment AND faves, what do I do?
What do you do?
Give in return.
If YOU want faves or comments, you're gonna' have to comment AND fave other deviations, and just like the subject before. You can get noticed. But it depends on the deviation. Though, of course, if you're one of those people who instantly want to get noticed. Then good luck. It's not gonna take you 15 or 20 deviations to reach up to about 5,000 or possibly 10,000 pageviews. But that is totally off topic. Maybe if I have time (or if i even want to) I'll probably do another news letter.

How the heck do I get noticed?!

*dareme:icondareme: reports, November 6, 2008
Most of us have this problem ... we create and create and create and no-one seems to give a damn!
Other than whine about how unfair it is, what can we effectively do to change that?

Here's what I've found:

Throw in some personality with your art.

Image Descriptions:
Write about how the image came to be or how you feel about it. Get a little personal; it will help people relate to the image.
Personal Journal:
Share a little piece of yourself. This will make people interested in you, and that in turn will make them more eager to look at the art you create.
Own Opinions:
Make statements. Like: "I support environmental care!", Or: "I oppose discrimination!", or even the exact opposite. It doesn't really matter all that much WHAT your opinions are; but by speaking them out, creating art to reflect opinions and posting news/journals about your opinions you will attract people who think along the same lines; they will likely be interested in what you have to say and therefore discuss with you.
Be Eccentric:
Right. Here's a tricky one. BE DIFFERENT. A little mad, a little rough around the edges, strange, weird, adventurous, timid, WHATEVER. Just make sure you don't quite fit in with the mass; because if you blend too well you become invisible.

Be active in the community.

Join Clubs:
When you post a picture to dA, it appears on the frontpage for about 0.428 seconds and then it is pushed back to the gallery you submitted it to and disappears in the masses of submissions.
Those 0.428s are likely not going to get you much exposure. Make your art more accessible to others by submitting it to clubs.
What clubs are "right" for you? Check a clublist, like *clubdirectory or ~DevDirectoryA-Z to find clubs that you feel good about.
Post comments and critism:
You want people to comment and critique on your art, right? Well, SO DO OTHER PEOPLE. There's a saying as old as humankind itself: "Treat others as you would like to be treated". You want comments and critique? Comment and critique others! You want to get individual feedback? Provide it for others! Which brings us to our next point:
Expose Others:
Right, so you have made ten watchers and have a couple of hundred pageviews? Start linking cool art in your journal and talking about why you like it. Forward the link to the people you featured. If you have a subscription, start featuring people. Always send them the link to the journal they're featured in. Suggest DDs. Even if your suggestion isn't chosen, tell the person you suggested THAT you suggested them and WHY.
Be Approachable:
Answer comments that go beyond a simple: "Nice man!" or "Cute!". Be willing to get into conversations with people. Be willing to make friends. Share experiences. Let people identify with you. If you're having a rough time, let people comfort you.

Keep going 'til the end

Yes: Getting known is hard work. It might take long. You might walk some lonely roads and feel like all your efforts are unappreciated.
That's tough, but hey, so is life! Be bigger better stronger than the challenges you face. Never give up. Resigning is the only thing that can stop you from making it big. If you were to survey all the famous artists of the past and present: Most fought hard to get where they are today. We need to fight!

Play it as a game

Don't take things too seriously. We are here to have fun and create beautiful things, remember? Remind yourself of the good things. Take a day off and spend it reading your favourite book or polishing your car.
Inspiration comes with an open mind and light heart. :)

So, this is it for the tips I can think of today. Helpful or not? Do you think I'm spot-on or completely missed the point?
Feel free to discuss, I would love to hear what you think.
Have thought about this in the past too? Share your tips

Super Artikel! :)

:icondareme:
lol ........... das isch eso! :D
Aber meh tuet wasme chan, oder? *grins*

Haha.. Been doing most of the above points recently before reading this news.

There's a slight improvement in my exposure which is a good start :)

:iconbarninga:
a very good article, an effective description of what being an active member of a community should mean for anyone.

however it looks like that there's an additional way to get noticed. just expose your skin and you'll boost your pageviews. sadly enough, considered how few real artistic nude shots are around, compared with a flood of simply-nude or semi-porn images...

Absolutely. :)

Thank you. :)

And yes: "Sex sells", and this is as true as it ever was.
There are a few other things you can do to earn yourself some dubious fame (like Chris Crocker demonstrates), but I'm going for something a little less insane .... more along the lines of Myles Dyer or Val.
