I asked deviants about their interpretation of conceptual photography. The answers I got were all unique, none of them are wrong, its just that they are individual opinions, definitions and thought process. We cant all think the same
What does the word 'Concept' mean to you? What are your usual subjects/study in your concepts (photographs) and how do you develop them? ...to me a conceptual photo should portray a specific feeling or emotion without the use of words - *Kelly63
I usually get an idea in mind, it can be about a specific subject, or area, or a metaphor, almost anything, then I think how I can develop that idea to make it be a concept, something to show that people will understand (or not, the most of the times I want them to figure out by themselves and enjoy with what they're looking at), and so I set the "stage" and work on it.
But yeah, I usually create metaphors, meanings. - =whenSmyledoesnttalk
I always thought concept was a picture that looked like it had some kind of story to it. - *The-Avel-Fairy
...to me it's portraying the idea you have in your head. When I look at the image and I understand the idea the artist had, it means to me it is conceptual work. - `WaitingForTheWorms
Concept -- It holds a specific meaning and it can teach the world how to become brighter, faster, more tolerant and everything else.
Usual subjects? Whatever fits the concept.
But for now, I'm just trying to study how to create a conceptual image. - nod -
My photographs have concepts in the descriptions but they do not portray concepts because I have to explain the concepts. If I can get to the point where the viewer knows the concept by just looking at the piece, then I will be truly satisified with my work. - ~LostWithinDreams
I love conceptual photography. To me conceptual art is art that has a meaning to it, a story, a metaphor, something close to the artist. It makes you think more or laugh. I tend to write and express my interpretation of my concept in the artist's notes, but I try to let the viewers grasp their own meaning they get from a picture. - ~Cinderella2B
I would say vision. In the context of photography I would say that conceptual photography is the art of creating an image photographically that transmits a vision and or feeling. - *JAHarrell
To me a concept is an idea. - `TerrorCookie
To me it's like an image idea or notion which is formed in the mind ->a concept, plan or design. Mental impression in photo/image. That is like you want to say something with your image or categorize it to somewhere. It's like manifesto from you or something like that. - *Kainoland
its more than what you see and it makes you say 'aaahhhh' - =passionheart
Often Conceptual to me is coming up with a specific theme for a photo and then working the theme into the image as well as I can. - *catsagecat
An idea (concept) comes to mind. I in turn design the shot, what I want the subject to be, the location, time of day, lighting and mood. I capture this image and present it. Well planned photography... I have been doing this for a while now and never had a clue. - =surrealeye
I have different definition. A concept is basically a better view of an idea that one can think & visualize. Talking about conceptual Photography it is the composition & execution of the concept. Now there are two very important aspects that everyone should consider: Planned & Unplanned shots. All conceptual pieces are not planned every time, making a concept with nature's shot is a good example.
I am very much into conceptual photography and I usually use daily life objects to show different themes. like Love, Racism, etc etc. - =aksdareflection
There are times in our lives (Im sure everyone have felt this) when you sit and think and it's something like brainstorming and an image pops up in your mind, some kind of a visual interpretation of your thoughts. For me this is conceptual. And not only images with a concept for you one and only, but images which 'talk' about global problems, not only yours, images that shows us a finished and whole concept, meaning. - *BehindTheWrath
"CONCEPT" Whatever I see through the lens of my camera at the time. It begins with a thought and perception. Then the naked eye picks up an object. The idea is born where it is then created - "manifesting" an impression, furthering itself into a formation ultimately from conception. - *XOGoddess
I think that the concept is the purpose to define our feelings and emotions through our photographs or our art without saying any word coz words often hurt but concept doesn't - ~faiz-anwer
I think is having an idea in your head and then putting it into practice. But then again this is what I always do about my photographs. I have them in my head, even have titles for them and then go on about and shoot them. Even for landscapes well at least some of them. - *KirlianCamera
An idea, turned into a message, captured through photograph. - `synconi
A 'concept' to me is simply something that is ideal to the artist, a thought or feeling which needs to be let out! - *D3N1S3
So what does conceptual mean to you? Im sure it must be along the same thought process of what these deviants so eagerly stated. If you didn't understand it before, well now you know. Hopefully now you arent confused, or at least Im hoping, a little bit less confused

In the end it is how you portray your concept, the core definition still stands.

Once in a while you get shown the light
In the strangest of places if you look at it right.
I think I'll try conceptualism again...but with a better defentions. And with more fine-tuned concepts.
