Giving to those who are truly in need

=ImaRawkStar:iconImaRawkStar: reports, December 23
This is the time of year of which we all get tangled up in our own troubles and do not focus on some of the real issues of the world. Well, heifer.org can help us with this, by giving animals to families who are truly in need of food, shelter and security.

By donating a small sum of money, such as ten to twenty dollars, you could provide a family with an animal such as a cow, which could produce milk for the family, for food and cooking. With the extra milk it produces, the family can go to the local market and sell the milk to gain more money, which could go towards food and shelter. Over time, the family will start to gain an income and will be able to earn an education.

With the education, they can receive a steady job and produce a stable income for the family to survive. Just by donating a small sum of money, you could not change one life, but many around them. But this is not just it, the family MUST produce offspring to give to another family, which will do the same thing as the family before. Over time, the community will grow and sooner or later, the impoverished areas will start to gain strength.

Even if you can not donate any money, please donate a few seconds or minutes by adding a favorite to this article and sending it on to other deviants around deviantart. It would be really awesome if we could get some support on this, and maybe as an art community we can pull together to help others in need! I know it can be done!

Rape is not just a crime, it is a heinous and personal invasion on the most intimate of levels. Rape destroys lives and belittles its victims. End the silence, conquer fear, and speak up. We need to raise awareness and help prevent this inhumane crime.

What School Has Taught Me About Art

~t001:icont001: reports, November 24, 2008
To start things off,I did not go to art school.. or even a school that had an art major. Four years ago when I was deciding on which school to attend, art was just a hobby. It was not until my sophomore year that it turned into something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I chose to go to a small private school, Tennessee Wesleyan College.

The school only offers art as a minor, but with the help of the art professor, I am getting an art/education degree. I have taken as many art classes as I can and have worked closely with the art instructors. Although we have conflicting styles, I have learned a lot from them.

As a freshmen, I showed my instructors my drawings. They were impressed, but not like I thought they would be. It was a humbling experience which led to the First thing I learned about art...

I.
Just because you can draw realistically does not make you an artist. Copying from a photo doesn't necessarily count as art. While it is impressive.. it is actually quite boring. This is still something I struggle to understand on a daily basis. I think that there is much to learn from drawing portraits as far as getting familiar with the media, but the style seems very limited.

II.
Art does not always HAVE to mean something. No matter what.. we will NEVER know the meaning behind many works of art. There is no way of knowing.. we can only speculate what the master artist meant in their paintings. In the mean time, it is still fun to guess.

III.
Create from the heart. In my studio class, I had to write my own goals. Much of it had to do with experimentation because I felt locked into my own style. I soon found myself creating.. well... crap because I needed to complete a certain amount of work. That taught me to stick with what works. Experimenting is a great thing, but you don't have to make a radical change. Try to slowly add other ideas into your work just to see what happens.

Quickies

- Composition is everything

- Abstract artists have feelings too

- Don't make art about the money

- Only 40% of artists are gay.. so don't feel too left out.

- Tearing up art is a great way to learn.

- Bob Ross is the Chuck Norris of Art... deal with it.

- Linoleum cuts provide a great opprotunity to pull pranks on teachers...

- Crimson paint with a little water makes for some amazing fake blood.

- I spray painted "Art is Dead" on the wall of the art building and nobody noticed...

Hope this helped some of you guys out there.

I have to disagree with you about your first point. While I understand your need to justify art for the sake of a "style" I think that a deep study in art history will make you rethink the purpose and meaning of art. Artist that capture realistic portraits, landscapes, etc are also writing down a part of history in their own point of view. Telling a story of a time or of an individual person. That in itself is amazing. Take an example of the Mona Lisa. The mystery of who she is and the story behind her smile makes the piece invaluable...not the "style". "The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life." (a quote by William Faulkner). The detailed strokes of a realistic portrait hold no less emotion and importance than those of the tortured abstract artist and his pressing point of view. One is just louder than the other. I hope you understand my point of view in this comment. I am an art appreciator of all styles and felt that I needed to speak up about it. Thanks.

I couldn't agree with you more.. I think what I said is kind of a touchy subject too. I'm not taking anything away from the master artist who were students of art their entire lives. However, I also think there is a difference between the mona lisa and a drawing of House (not that they should ever be compared). Drawing from a model and drawing from a photo are completely different. Also, the motives behind the artwork have a lot to do with the point I was trying to make about portraits. We can take what you said

Artist that capture realistic portraits, landscapes, etc are also writing down a part of history in their own point of view. Telling a story of a time or of an individual person. (Mona Lisa)

Or

I'm doing a portrait of him because he's cool. (House)

One is art.. and to me, one is clearly not. I hope I clarified what I was trying to say. Thanks for taking time and leaving a good comment that actually sparks some conversation. (i don't really get to "talk art" with many people)
