Jo Spence photographs are to be used in the Beautiful Breasts project. Terry Dennete curator of Jo's work contacted the Beautiful Breasts team suggesting we incorporate Jo's images in the project. We are more than happy to use Jo's moving, intimate and thought provoking photographs. Terry said that the Beautiful Breasts project was just the sort of project Jo would have liked when she was alive.
Jo Spence (1934-1992)
Spence was a photographer and teacher well known for her poignant explorations on the family and self image through her book Putting Myself in the Picture (Camden press)
She broke new ground in 1982 by developing methods of using photography as a therapeutic tool during illness. First as an adjunct to her breast cancer treatment program and secondly as a means of confronting the question of mortality and approaching death following a second diagnosis of leukaemia
