One World One Art Tour: Strokes for Hope

~ume-boshi:iconume-boshi: reports, December 18
This is an international exhibit that will tour several countries and by shown in multiple galleries over a two-year period. The title, Strokes for Hope, refers to painting with compassion and a forward vision. It suggests that works submitted will reflect, on some level, that the artist is thinking about issues such as world peace, hunger and poverty that require positive social change. It is hoped that works will create some viewer awareness or stimulate public thought/action about these types of issues. Work may be abstract or realistic. There is no restriction on style. Creative approaches are encouraged!

Eligibility
Open to all artists world-wide. Artists are invited to submit up to three pieces for consideration. Works selected by jurors from submitted entries will be chosen on the basis of creative excellence and quality of execution. All works must be original and completed within the last four years. Deadline for submissions is January 20, 2010.

:star-empty:WHAT IS Para-CON?

Para-CON is not about being the largest Paranormal event in the country, it is about educating the public to the culture of paranormal. We have brought together many educated and beautiful speakers, artists, performers, models, etc to reveal to the world that paranormal is diversity. Para-CON is about celebrating and understanding the many cultures it crosses.

:star-empty:WHAT IS PARANORMAL?
Paranormal is an umbrella term used to describe a wide variety of reported anomalous phenomena. According to the Journal of Parapsychology, the term paranormal describes "any phenomenon that in one or more respects exceeds the limits of what is deemed physically possible according to current scientific assumptions."

As a broader category, the paranormal sometimes describes subjects outside the scope of parapsychology, including anomalous aspects of UFOs, some creatures that fall under the scope of cryptozoology, purported phenomena surrounding the Bermuda Triangle, and many other non-psychical subjects.[1]

In parapsychology, it is used to describe the potentially psychic phenomena of telepathy, extra-sensory perception, psychokinesis, ghosts, and hauntings. Stories relating to paranormal phenomena are found in popular culture and folklore.[2]

:star-empty:WHY A PARANORMAL "CULTURE" EVENT?

When questioning Sarah Lester of VogueELITE why she decided to break away from the typical paranormal conference format of ghost stories or workshops and turn Para-CON 2009 Las Vegas into a culture related event she replied,
"I wanted to show a different side of the paranormal community. I wanted to show the younger generation it has crossed over to. This new generation of artists, entertainers, and thinkers have nothing to connect with when looking for events to attend in celebration of their beliefs or experience. Not only am I thinking about new generations but due to the date of the event I am weighing in the true meaning of the American Spirit and all the cultures it envelopes.

It is time to celebrate the many different cultures the unexplained has intersected into; how it has effected art, music, fashion, science, religion, and security. I am working within a culture event and not your typical conference format because I think it is refreshing to incorporate music and art.”

:star-empty:Para-CON MEDIA...

Para-CON 2009 Las Vegas is making a splash in the world wide media. From interviews in the U.K. to appearances on The Tyra Show, this culture event is packed full of press. No doubt the popularity of convention host Don Henrie a.k.a.The Vampire Don adds to the powerhouse of speakers and entertainers booked for Para-CON 2009 Las Vegas.

Maury Povich, also a supporter of paranormal subjects, recently filmed Don Henrie for the "Vampires & Paranormal Special". Maury has also graciously promoted Para-CON 2009. The show will air Friday, December 4th 2008. The video link is posted below for further updates.

8. *weareminion posted a Para-CON inspired paranormal art news journal:
"In this addition of the TVD Vampire and Dark Art Favorites Journal, TVD management decided to focus on a favorite subject of ours: The Paranormal. To fully understand what is paranormal and understand the cultures that embody its studies you could attend Para-CON Las Vegas.

We have featured the paranormal as a subject because we find very little ghostly artwork and feel that those who have taken the time to create work based on the alternative subject should be recognized. These pieces are the best DA has to offer in ghostly artwork.

This seems like it'll be an excellent event. Is it annual, and will the location change each year? I'd love to go!

I saw a previous article noting the Tyra Banks show promotion last month. Today, while flipping channels, I happened to see the clip with Don, and I was so glad I caught it. It seemed like a surface-skimming interview (or perhaps I didn't catch the right part of the segment), but it did mention he'd be appearing on National Geographic (I didn't catch the airing date). Do you have more information on this other show they spoke of? I must tell you, this is one of the few times in the last three years that I wished I still had satellite tv!

I'm not going to be in Las Vegas for the convention, but I would love to see the convention some day. I wish everyone the best, though; it sounds like it will be quite the shindig. :D In the meantime, I'll be at my laptop, browsing the intarwebz in search of more great people, and maybe some lolcats too. (I really can't resist.)

Thanks so much for posting the info here!
