Vexelove's Extra Feature - December
Who is "rjonesdesign"? Could you tell us something about you?"I'm from Reno, so I enjoy backpacking, skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking, and pretty much anything that requires exploring the mountains. I love my Family and Friends, and enjoy spending time with them. I'm also an avid photographer, with an emphasis on shooting pretty women!"
Why and when did you start appreciating art?"My Father was an excellent painter, even did it professionally for a short time, so I grew up around creativity. I won a contest in 2nd grade (a bike!), by painting a landscape. Later that same year, I won another contest by drawing Darth Vader-I knew from then I wanted to be an artist of some kind."
Do you look up to any artist in particular?"Robert Blue, and Patrick Nagel for graphic interpretation and portraits. George Trosley for vehicles, and J. Scott Campbell and Michael Turner for comics. I have also learned a great deal from working with Dean Yeagle on colorizations and digital inking. There are far too many dA artists to name who also motivate and challenge me to do my best work."
How would you describe your art?"In commercial art, you have to adapt to whatever your client's need's are. Some of my work is photorealistic, while some is cartoon and comics. For portraits and vehicles, I prefer a photorealistic style. In most cases, I work in Illustrator, so my work is basically vectored shapes filled with color or gradient. If I am working with Dean however, my style is cartoon or comic."
What do you think differs your art from others?"My photorealistic art is different because I use a lot of gradients to create the same effect as a Photoshop vexel, without the banding, or color steps. I try to limit my gradients to only radial and linear, drawing the shapes of the face in particular with simple, elegant lines, and allow the color to give depth and dimension."
What are you currently working on? What can we expect from you in future?"I currently have several projects in the mix. A few new slot machine designs, in addition to a few dA related projects. It's also close to Christmas, so I may have a few secrets here and there too!"
What are your 3 favourite deviations from your own gallery and why?"
