Motion in Photography

*GavinTheBard:iconGavinTheBard: reports, 1d 1h ago
Photography is about capturing a moment in time to remember and to show to others. Sometimes we do this without thinking about, but other times people use specific techniques and camera settings to create the illusion of motion within the image.

Meet the Mother of Dragons, Mamazmeilor

=SLPdomain:iconSLPdomain: reports, December 8, 2008
I’d like to introduce to you Mamamelizor aka Crina.
Before the popularity of vampires etc etc…there was a little unknown place;
Transylvania.
Ok..While you may echo that name with a hint of Béla Lugosi 'I vant to suck your blood', those of us on dA make immediate associations with a woman with an eye for colour, a wit for amusement and a sensitivity to a womans psyche.
These qualities are what have made her presence here undeniable.
So, today, we bring to you a third installment on the creative genius that makes this place tolerable to linger on.

:bulletblue:Stef:
How should we begin this interview?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
What’s in a name???LOL - =mamazmeilor

:bulletblue:Stef:
Yes…that’s actually a good start.
First, I can never spell it.
Second…not sure how many know what it means.

:firelite-photo:Crina:
Mama Zmeilor - Mother of Dragons - it' a character you'll often meet in Romanian folklore; usually she's meaner and more devious than her 3 idiot monster sons... I used her as a character a few years ago in a short play that I wrote with a friend, and got stuck with the nickname ever since...
LEARN to spell it!!!!!! D'oh!

:bulletblue:Stef:
That is so interesting.
Who would have known?
*
And are you trying to imply I am one of those idiot monster offspring ?:bonk:

:firelite-photo:Crina:
Nah, you’d have to stop being John Malkovich for that…:matrixfight:

:bulletblue:Stef:
How long has it been since you’ve had an interest in photography?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
In my ‘current’ way of expression, I would say 3 years maybe; but I remember my teenage years, when my Dad bought me a Russian plastic camera – can’t recall the name, but it looked very much like a disposable one, and it would work with medium format film!!!
There you go – the squares addiction “avant-la-lettre”;
also, I used his Zenith and then developed the photos in a little home lab he put together;
I lost any interest for many years, until I got a compact camera in 2004; then I got my first SLR two years ago; I suppose that kind of started it…

:bulletblue:Stef:
What was your first camera?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
I guess I just answered that - but hey, I still think of the Zenith as my real first camera…

:bulletblue:Stef:
Do you always carry your camera with you?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
S#@*; no! Not in town, that is…I carry my fancy cell phones instead:iconchickendanceplz: – and take snapshots which I most likely delete when I get back home; however, I do carry my camera whenever I visit with friends or go out of town.

:bulletblue:Stef:
What are your inspirations?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
Actually, people – I can’t say I have an eye for ‘street photography’ or architecture; but I never tire to look at people; on the other hand, my mood changes dramatically with the light, the season, the everyday little happenings. I try to take photos when I am happy, but also when I am pissed or bored – it is interesting in hindsight to associate photos with moods ;)

:bulletblue:Stef:
It seems you have two passions for photography— portraits and landscapes…are either more preferred?
also, the shift from the two comes from what?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
I would say portraits; as much as I know I have quite a number of landscapes posted here, they are not exactly my ‘cup of tea’ (or glass of beer???); we own a house in the country, in the very heart of Transylvania – and the scenery is breathtaking over there – so I had to try my eye on it;
to be honest, I am pretty surprised myself with the success of these images here, on dA, and out of it;
I think maybe the ‘exotic’ or ‘mysterious’ notion of this province has something to do with it too…I think Transylvania is a touristic fiction for those who never lived here;
to the inhabitants, it’s a pragmatic world, not a decorative and corny calendar; it’s legitimate to talk and capture its picturesque alluring beauty, but trust me, there’s a tragic and tormented side of it way beyond what meets the eye. And I think I never was able to actually capture that so far.

:bulletblue:Stef:
Actually, a couple my favorite images of yours
demonstrate the hard life you speak of…so perhaps you have captured that truth more then you realize.

:firelite-photo:Crina:
I have studied art back in high school, for 8 years, but I am afraid I was never good enough at portraits; was terribly jealous of those who were; I am trying to compensate that inability through this glass eye – never get enough of it; in real life, I’d say I am rather shy, sometimes I even find it difficult to maintain eye-contact with the person in front of me, but hey, when I have the camera, I turn into a beast…I am called Mamazmeilor for a reason…
Again, there’s a need to see beyond the evidence; I realize that most of my models are beautiful women; but it’s not the obvious beauty I am looking for – it’s the spark that must be hiding inside and makes this subject different and unique; plain beauty doesn’t really stir me; after all Adam was confronted with a woman holding an apple – he eventually chose the apple…

:bulletblue:Stef:
You are indeed compensating…as well as excelling. To be able to both capture the essence of a persona as well as make it look good…that’s ability if not genius.

*
One thing that I really fancy is your ability to portray such clear colours---do you do any post processing on them?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
Yes I do – I am obsessed with colors – when I press the shutter button, I usually have a certain ‘look’ in mind – and am extremely frustrated when I download the images and the magic is not there; I take it to Photoshop and try to remember what I had ‘seen’ when I took the photo; doesn’t always work, and I have to start over, but the ride is awesome.
*
:bulletblue:Stef:
Can you share some secrets for those of us less adapt at producing the clarity of colour?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
I really can’t say – most of the times I just fiddle with levels, color balance and selective color layers; maybe cross-processing; adding a vignette; burn and dodge; there’s no rule – I just think of what I want to achieve and find a way to get there. Doesn’t always work.:D

:bulletblue:Stef:
We know that you’ve had exhibitions in the past---so why is it that you feature your work on a place like dA?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
Hey, yes, I did have some exposure, but that happens maybe a couple times a year;
for the rest of the time, I need interaction and ultimately, constant inspiration;
dA is a good place for exchanging thoughts and art; I admire quite a number of people here, and there’s always a new challenge, a new window to open; of course this won’t substitute the need for information one can gather via academic or professional art websites or books, but it surely can provide a daily dose of beauty and aesthetic ‘inebriation’…

:bulletblue:Stef:
If you could change something here on this site---what would it be?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
Ah, well, don’t start me; better gallery moderators, better layout, better spam control, less pornography disguised as art, a more coherent approach to photography – the categories are driving me crazy – I’d rather click a button and enter “ Photography” – period; not manipulations, snapshots of the pet or boy/girlfriend, and such…
Well, many things could be different, but I suppose for the bucks it’s ok.

:bulletblue:Stef:
Do you have any future projects or series that we can look forward to?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
Cannot say I am very organized really; currently I am working on a project with my friend Andor Komives, and we also have another one in store for the future; painting and photography – of course; I love working in ’ pairs’ because if I rely only on myself, I am tempted to procrastinate and ultimately give it all up.
What I am trying to say is that whatever I do will eventually fall into a project – if you move under the sun, you surely leave a shadow – how pretty or dull that is – remains to be seen.

:meditate:

:bulletblue:I asked Crina to share a few thumbs that are her favorites

:bulletblue:Stef:
Have you ever thought about taking pictures while working on your patients?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
Lady, your questions are the expression of a devious mind… Next thing you’ll ask me is if I ever had sex on the dental chair :lol:

Yes I have taken photos of some dental work – you won’t like them however, so better move on to the next question…

:bulletblue:Stef:
Do you baby your camera…
Take good care of it---clean the sensor etc…if so—what could you share for those who may neglect these areas?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
Eek!! I do, and since we’ve already visited my dental office, I can share my mega-secret – I clean my sensor with my dental unit air blower; fast and accurate…;)
Other than that, I clean the lenses just like everybody else – and try to avoid dropping them on the ground too often. But they have surely had their share of adventure…

:bulletblue:Stef:
Are you confident about your work?
What would you like to change or try concerning your work?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
Not sure; these days I am pretty unsure of it; I have the feeling I need to experiment more, express myself better; it’s not like I’ve been trying to hide myself behind pretty pictures, but I believe the way to keep and reveal beauty is by abandoning the moment after ‘owning’ it… If you want to ‘treasure’ it, ‘save’ it, it will surely fade out, lose its edges, fall into void.
*
:bulletblue:Stef:
Do you pre-conceive your work or impromptu?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
Rarely; indeed, the works with Andor have a theme (the Atelier and the Mirrors), but usually I just go out and photograph; then I might delete everything, or keep a few images; when I work with models I have a general idea as what to expect in the end, but I am not a control freak in this respect. Just trying to enjoy and stick to the playful side of photography

:bulletblue:Stef:
If what you’ve already produced is a fore gleam of the future series…we wait in eager expectation.

What would you like to accomplish with your photography…
And how do you stay inspired?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
Accomplish? Overcoming my stupid limitations – crossing the lines, finding answers to my anxieties. The quality of being new every time; without changes, our lives would be a simple way of treasuring failures; don’t freeze the moment, but rather change it; move on, let me start over again, discover myself in the next mirror.. Don’t know if this makes any sense…
As for inspiration, need I spell it out??? BEER!

:bulletblue:Stef:
And… why may I ask do you not take my advice to drink water instead?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
I honestly hope you are not taking your advice either…:ohmygod:

:bulletblue:Stef:
One word…Hennessey.

:bulletblue:Stef:
Are there any artists here on dA of whom you appreciate or feel inspired by?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
Yes there are; I am afraid I would be unfair if I just mentioned one name or two, so I’m not sure I should; however, in my first days/weeks on this site, I added a few people in my watch list, they have been a constant inspiration – Cyril =CBJJBC, Antonio *cecinestpasunepipe, Elinor `equivoque, Julien *jumaxotl,: Lauren *lauren-rabbit

:bulletblue:Stef:
Finally ...how often do you brush your teeth?
Do you follow the dentist directions?

:firelite-photo:Crina:
Hahahaaaaaaaaa – yes I do – What a bore….being a dentist…

:star:
While the visual stimulus of anothers work can be so inspiring, I find, hearing the thoughts behind the genius are just as rewarding.
While in real time, a chance to interview a ' popular ' photographer is beyond a little persons expectations...being able to establish such interchange-- here in this cyber gallery of amazing genius, is but a reason I find myself surfing in dA wonders.
Crina...A lovely person to exchange thoughts with allows her self to be approachable by her friendly warmth and solidarity to an artist community.
We hope that all folks we read this---respect her copyrights.
All images here posted are her private property.
