For the love of stock, don't do it!

`Mithgariel:iconMithgariel: reports, December 10, 2008
I've written countless comments and notes concerning these topics, so I figured - let's make an article to raise awareness (once again). All this has been spoken of before and will be spoken of again and again. Please heed.

 Stockers, do not take images from sxc.hu or any other resource site for that matter, manipulate them and offer them as stock. That is not allowed!
Quoting Image License of sxc.hu -

"SELLING AND REDISTRIBUTION OF THE IMAGE (INDIVIDUALLY OR ALONG WITH OTHER IMAGES) IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN! DO NOT SHARE THE IMAGE WITH OTHERS!"

Artists - don't use these "stock images", don't encourage those who have willingly or unwillingly done wrong. Instead, tell them they're not supposed to do that.
It does not matter if they credit the artists or not - unless they have written permission, they're not allowed. Period.

Stockers - please, don't steal. Pretty please. If you have such images, please, remove them.

 Stockers, don't take other stock images from DA, mix them together (or manipulate in any other way) and offer them as stock (with or without crediting the actual owners) UNLESS you have permissions from all original image owners. (And if you get so lucky and do have them, credit - do not claim it your own. You worked on it - true, but you did not take the pictures.)

Artists - don't use these images, don't encourage these artists. Explain them (don't flame!) where they've gone wrong.

& finally

 Artists - if you use stock images from other sites, please treat those artists with the same respect than you treat your fellow deviants. Which means:

- linking back to the author and image
- letting the artists know. (You know, many of them have even DA accounts, and if not - they're still a very nice bunch of people and they'll come and take a look, share a good word about your work)

Writing that you got the "other images" from sxc.hu is as bad and ridiculous as saying you got them from DA. Don't credit the site, credit the authors.

Look around in your gallery, if you have images that lack credit, try to correct it.

TIP: If you look at the downloaded images from sxc.hu, you see two numbers. The first is that of the image, so if you open a random photo in sxc.hu and replace the number with the first number of your image, it takes you exactly to your image. This is a great way to keep track of them, link, credit and notify.

:blackrose:

Fellow deviants, I ask that you bear this in heart and help spread the word. Many of you know, but many don't.

Don't do it, don't encourage, help those who have done something wrong.

:rudolph:

Happy holidays to everyone!

Good article.. redistribution of stock is indeed a violation. If anyone comes across stock with sxc.hu credits, just use the Report Violation button. :)
:iconmithgariel:
Yep. That, too. But I think awareness if pretty damn important here, too. We can only fight all this if people know (and care...). It's sad to see such images with hundreds of faves sometimes and dozens of praise, but not one single person telling the artist they went wrong... *sigh*

But I'm not gonna give up on this. Part of my holy war! After all, Gabriel called me Holy Mother of Stock once - got to earn that title :p

HERE HERE!
I often point this out to people. Mostly they are thankful and remove the image. Tho sometimes its met with rudeness
Yup, they get reported allright. Ive journaled on this a few times now, it irks me something shocking

Same here, though from time to time I feel like caller in a desert, when dozens of fans go wild about how great the image is and I'm like... ummm...violation? Didn't anyone else know or care to point this out? Psgh.

I think you can journal again now, and just point out this article. I HOPE (considering the time being 2 o'clock at night and me recovering from the shock of being robbed...) that I managed to cover all points.

While I've yet to have any of my stock raided (although depending on how you look at it some might argue the fact that my work is used almost exclusively apparently by horse obsessed teenage girls) I'd have to agree; my entire university experience centered around proper documentation of used sources, in a day and age when people just shrug and say "eh they shouldn't have put it out there" there damn well should be people mentioning this, though this from a guy who had three to four copies of the same type of manuals on documentation from his senior year
