It's coming close to the end of the year and many of us will be standing around in the cold watching the firework displays in various towns. Here are some tips to take great shots of what you are seeing up in the sky.
According to the experts:
There are two basic elements you need in order to take great shots.
1. A time exposure.
2. A solid platform for the camera.
Going further in depth into this:
1: How long should your time exposure be? It truly depends on what you are shooting and the ambient light surrounding it. Also, is there water reflections involved? Time ranges from at least one second long, some two seconds, and some even longer than that. With your camera set at an ISO 100, a one-second exposure should be sufficient.
2: A solid platform, pretty simple, use a tripod or other make-shift platform. Also try locking the mirror in the up position to avoid any sort of camera shake.
Other variables:
Aperature: You'd think that opening it wide would be the right choice? Wrong. You want to record the flash of light, not the dark sky, so actually setting it as small as possible is the best option. Try a smaller aperture like f/8, or f/11, or even f/16. This depends on the speed of your film (or camera ISO setting) and how bright the flash is...so you may need to bracket your shots and use different settings.
Focus: Set it to infinity, or go ahead and trust your camera and put it on automatic. You have other things to worry about than trying to quickly manually focus.
ISO: Be careful that you don't set this too high, the end result will be noise and/or blown out flashes. An ISO of 100-400 when setting everything else correctly is sufficient.
Flash: NO. Unless you are trying to capture an object in the foreground of your photo.
Remote Shutter Release: If your camera lets you do it? Then use it. They aren't that expensive and allows you to enjoy the display while taking the shots. You aren't stuck behind that little eye piece trying to get the shot.
